The same textbook is/may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will be a survey of music and musical styles. By the end of the course you will have enhanced your abilities of musical perception. The basic structure of music is discussed, as well as how music relates to man s cultural and social experiences. Certain sections, as designated on semester schedules of classes, will feature a study of American jazz. PREREQUISITES None COURSE GOALS Students will demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of music and demonstrate an understanding of musical style periods including characteristics, genres, and composers for American music, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classic, Romantic, and 20 th century. LAB REQUIREMENTS Students should expect to spend an average of 3 to 5 hours per week on homework materials. ATTENDANCE Students are given 3 free unattended absences for miscellaneous schedule conflicts, sicknesses, etc. If you must miss more than three classes during the semester, they must be excused by a doctor s notice, teacher s notice, or other evidence that you must miss the class. For EACH unexcused absence past 3, your final grade will drop by 5%. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

In this class, any occurrence of academic dishonesty will be referred to the Dean of Student Services for prompt adjudication, and will, at a minimum, result in a zero for the appropriate assignment in this course. Sanctions may be imposed beyond your grade in this course by the Dean of Student Services. ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES Regular online participation is critical to successful completion of this course. It is the student s responsibility to withdraw from this class. If you stop attending class and do not withdraw, you will receive an F. The last day to withdraw from a class for this semester is October 30, COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICY Tests: Tests and quizzes will be given throughout the semester at the discretion of the instructor. These will include written questions and listening excerpts. Tests will comprise 45% of the final average. Discussions: These will pop up from week to week and will constitute 20% of the final grade. Performance Evaluations: These will be assigned twice throughout the semester. These assignments will comprise 15% of the final average. Class Participation and attendance: Students will be expected to participate in online discussions over reading assignments and listening examples, and attend class every week. Class participation and attendance will be considered by the instructor when calculating the final average

3 Final Exam: A final exam will be given which will cover written material and listening examples representing the cumulative knowledge and skills acquired by the end of the course. The final exam will comprise 20% of the final average. MAKE-UP POLICY Makeups, with sufficient justification, will be provided at the discretion of the instructor. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Students are expected to fully participate in this course.
