1 READING Standard 1: Understanding and Using Literary Texts 6.1 The student will read and comprehend a variety of literary texts in print and non-print formats analyze literary texts to draw conclusions and make inferences differentiate among the first-person and third-person points of view interpret devices of figurative language including simile, metaphor, personification, and hyperbole and sound devices including onomatopoeia and alliteration analyze an author s development of characters (major and minor), setting and conflict in a given literary text recognize and recall basic story elements in order to identify author s purpose and reflect on meaning interpret the effect of author s craft including tone, flashback, foreshadowing and building suspense on the meaning of literary texts compare/contrast main ideas in literary texts create responses to literary texts through a variety of methods for example written works, oral/visual presentations, discussions, media productions and the performing arts understand the characteristics of poetry including stanza, rhyme, scheme, repetition, and refrain understand the characteristics of drama including stage directions and the use of monologues analyze the works of fiction including legends and myths and works of non-fiction including speeches and essays by characteristics predict events in literary texts on the basis of cause-and-effect relationships read independently for extended periods of time for pleasure make connections to self, text and to the world read a sixth grade passage with understanding at the independent level

2 READING Standard 2: Understanding and Using Informational Texts 6.2 The student will read and comprehend a variety of informational text in print and non-print formats analyze main ideas within and between informational texts analyze informational texts to draw conclusions and make inferences summarize author s bias based on the omission of relevant facts and statements of unsupported opinions create responses to informational texts through a variety of methods for example drawings, written works, oral presentations, discussions and media productions interpret information using text elements for example print styles, chapter headings, tables of contents and glossaries interpret information using graphic elements for example illustrations, graphs, charts, maps, diagrams and graphic organizers predict events in informational texts on the basis of cause-andeffect relationships identify propaganda techniques including testimonials and bandwagon in informational texts read independently for extended periods of time to gain information evaluate the quality and accuracy of information accessed

3 READING Standard 3: Building Vocabulary 6.3 The student will use word analysis and vocabulary strategies to read fluently use context clues for example - a definition, restatement or an example to identify the meanings of unfamiliar and multiplemeaning words analyze the meaning of words by using Greek and Latin roots and affixes within texts interpret the literal and figurative meaning of idioms, analogies and euphemisms in texts distinguish between denotation and connotation of a given word spell new words using Greek and Latin roots and affixes decode unknown words using phonetic and structural strategies recognize synonyms, homophones and multiple-meaning words to interpret meaning self-correct using syntax, semantics and graphophonic cues when reading a sixth grade passage read with fluency a sixth grade passage at an independent level using appropriate expression, phrasing, smoothness and pace

4 WRITING Standard 4: Developing Written Communications 6.4 The student will create written work that has a clear focus, sufficient detail, coherent organization, use of voice and correct use of the conventions of Standard American English apply the writing process of prewriting, drafting, editing, revising and publishing organize written works using prewriting techniques for example discussions, graphic organizers, models and outlines use complete sentences in a variety of types including simple, compound and complex sentences create multiple-paragraph compositions that include a main idea with supporting details and use appropriate transitions between paragraphs use grammatical conventions of written Standard American English including: main and subordinate clause indefinite pronouns pronoun-antecedent agreement consistent verb tenses revise writing to improve clarity, tone, voice, content and the development of ideas edit for the correct use of written Standard American English including: Punctuation semicolon commas to enclose appositives commas to separate introductory clauses and phrases spell correctly using Standard American English

5 WRITING Standard 5: Producing Written Communications in a Variety of Forms 6.5 The student will write for a variety of purposes and audiences create informational pieces for example brochures, pamphlets and reports that use language appropriate for the specific audience create narratives that have a fully developed plot and a consistent point of view create written descriptions using precise language and vivid details create persuasive writings for example print ads and commercial scripts that develop a main idea with supporting details and use appropriate language for the specific audiences use information from multiple sources in writing

6 RESEARCHING Standard 6: Applying the Skills of Inquiry and Oral Communication 6.6 The student will access and use information from a variety of sources clarify and refine a research topic use direct quotations, paraphrasing or summaries to incorporate information into written, oral or visual works use a system of documentation for example a list of sources with full publication information and the use of in-text citations (MLA format) to properly credit the work of others use vocabulary that is appropriate for the particular audience or purpose use appropriate organizational strategies to prepare written works, oral and visual presentations select appropriate graphics, in print or electronic form, to support written works, oral and visual presentations use a variety of sources to gather data for example encyclopedia, internet, bibliographic and indexes including library indexes design and carry out research projects by selecting a topic, accessing resources and organizing information develop note-taking skills and interviewing techniques to gather data give oral presentations in content areas using proper pace and clear enunciation evaluate informational media using the teachings of the Catholic faith
