Peer Groups Minnesota Literacy Council AmeriCorps VISTA Welcome Peer Group Members! Peer Groups? What are they? Peer Groups are small groups of approximately 3-5 VISTA members from the larger cohort. These groups are established at the beginning of each year (and may have some change in members as people exit or start service at different times). Purpose: To build community among VISTAs in smaller functional groups To create additional spaces for reflection of your VISTA year To promote support networks and resource sharing Establishing and maintaining peer groups will ensure that VISTA members support one another, share skills, resources and networks, and build community with their fellow service members. Peer Group expectations: Peer groups will meet once a month coordinated by members in the group. Each meeting will require one member to be the coordinator. 1. Monthly Meeting a. Group members will rotate coordinating the monthly meeting with their Peer Group (Starting in September). b. The meeting should be 45 min to an hour and should be in person i. Meet at your site if possible ii. For those of you in greater Minnesota this may not work- in that case, meet at a coffee shop, restaurant, library etc c. I will provide suggested topics every month, but this meeting can take whatever form you want. d. After each meeting I want the coordinator to send me a form (this will be ed in advanced from me) telling me what you talked about, any resources you shared, where you met, how you utilized your time etc. Fall Skill share by VISTA member(s) on any area of expertise. May include: Professional skills: excel, public speaking, social media, using particular apps etc. Life hacks for VISTA: self-care, money saving etc. Non-VISTA related skills: cooking, crafts, yoga, etc. Spring Project update/ share by each VISTA may include: A description of the need and project Progress made so far and next steps Any cool stuff you ve been working on!

This is your group so we really encourage you to make these meetings your own! Feel free to get creative with it, or make changes when needed. You are also welcome to invite your VISTA Leader to the meetings, or let her know how it s going and if there are any great resources you d like to share with the whole cohort. Goals for Today 1. Get to know the people in your peer group, and exchange contact information. Talk about your project similarities and differences, and brainstorm ways to support each other over the course of the year. 2. Establish a meeting plan a. What are the best days and times for meetings as a group? b. Assign each member a month to coordinate the meeting Getting to know your group Group Discussion: Best Group Experiences (10 min) 1. Take turns by going around the group and have each individual tell about their best experience as part of a team or group. Describe what it was like, how it made you feel, what your role or contribution was. What aspects went in to making it such a great experience?

2. After everyone has gone, as a group, discuss any trends that you heard that contribute to a team experience being a great one. a. Of these ideas, which would you like to use or strive for in your peer group? b. Talk about what strengths different members have to contribute to the group. Icebreaker Question: If you could be an expert at any skill what would it be and why? Group Discussion: Creating your ground rules (10 min) Ground rules are an important tool for helping individuals function together as a team. These will reflect what is important to the members about how they work together and what they can expect for the year. To help you get started, think about the following: Meeting What would you like to see as far as meeting attendance, promptness, and participation? What will each member contribute to the team? Working together What does respectful behavior look like within the group? How will people be held accountable? Communication styles? How will you address potential conflict? Communicating How will you communicate and keep in touch outside of meeting times? Note: Each member should copy the ground rules below and keep this as a reference throughout the year.

~Ground Rules~ Activity: Select a group name and/or mascot! (15 min) Select something that represents you all as a group. Use a large sheet of paper to represent this team logo. Be prepared to share to the large group. Create your peer group meeting plan When are people available to meet? (ex: every first Friday of the month, 10am noon) Option 1: Option 2: Option 3: What dates/times will not work for people? (ex: program dates/conflicts, special events, etc) 1: 2: 3:

Who s coordinating?: Sep Jan May Oct Feb Jun Nov Mar Jul Dec Apr Expectations of meeting coordinator: 1. Coordinate time/location with group, provide directions/parking instructions as needed 2. Facilitate group discussion using suggested topics; Answer questions about site/position 3. Include any icebreakers or activities 4.
