3 Should Students Participate in Community Service? Take a position on this topic and write an essay to persuade readers to agree with your position on whether students should participate in community service. Community service is one way that volunteers can get involved in their community. Think about your own opinion. Does it really help people, animals or the environment? Is this a good use of your time? Or should people focus on work that makes money? Does community service work teach people anything? Do you think people are already too busy to find the time for community service? Before you write: Think about your position. Think about your reasons or appeals. Organise your reasons or appeals in the planning chart. When you write: Explain your position. Use reasons or appeals that would convince others. Summarise your position. While you write, remember to: Capitalise your title, any proper nouns and the beginning of each sentence. Use ending punctuation and commas, as needed. Use correct spelling. 8 Presentation of Your Writing Assessment Now that you have written your persuasive text on the topic of Should Students Participate in Community Service, you need to present it to the class. Presenting often goes with writing. Your teacher will give you time to gather illustrations and rehearse. Your teacher will then schedule your presentation time. Be sure to be ready! To present or deliver your presentation, use the skills in the Presenter Checklist. Rehearse your presentation a few times with a partner or in front of a mirror.
