2 Rising Fifth Graders, Summer 2018 Summertime! What a great time of the year! We all need time to rest and recharge. We also need time to get ready for what is to come. To help you prepare for the next school year, Lake Oconee Academy believes it is very important to retain current math and reading skills, extend knowledge into new areas, and improve areas of weakness. For fifth grade, the summer work is individualized to best meet your educational needs. Please review this summer packet and contact the appropriate teachers if further explanation of assignments is needed. We are looking forward to a great school year! All assignments must be completed before the first day of school.

3 Summer Reading Assignment 1. Read Mr. Tucket by Gary Paulsen and take the reading counts test. 2. Read a book of choice. You may read any book on or above your lexile level and take the reading counts test on the book when finished. If the book does not have a reading counts test, you should create a 10 question, multiple choice test with an answer key to turn in the first day of school. 3. You can take a reading counts test at home by completing the following steps: Log into VMWare. You can do this by going to Log in using your LOA log-in information. Click on Scholastic Reading Counts and log in. Click Take a Quiz. Enter the title or author s name to find the book. 3. You can also take the reading counts test in the LOA library over the summer. 4. If you are new to LOA, you will wait and take the reading counts test during the first week of school.

4 Summer math Assignment ReQuirements: 1.complete 45 min a week for 4 weeks of I-ready Total wll be 180 minutes or 3 hours This will be your first test grade in fifth grade math. 2. Practice Math Facts 2 times per week. See the following pages for more detailed information.

5 Basic Math Facts ( addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) are the concepts that I feel that we need to focus on for summer work. Please work with your child to master these facts. Math cards! 5th Grade Splash Math I also suggest that you get a set of multiplication and division flash cards if you do not already have them. Practicing with flash cards is also very beneficial. My goal is for the students to be able to finish paper/pencil 100 problems in 5 minutes. Practice worksheets can be found on

Each player turns over 2 cards and multiplies the numbers. The person with the higher product gets cards. If you have same product repeat cards. Winner takes all the cards. 2) Close to DEal 8 cards to each player. Use any 6 to make 2 3 digit numbers. Try to get a sum that is close to Write the two numbers in your journal. I m also open to other suggestions as long as you are working toward the goal of memorizing facts and having fun too.
