Research the issue, using a minimum of three resources. develop activities you could use in a classroom to explore that issue with students. You will sign up for a date to teach the class. You will be assessed on your research and planning (15 points) and refletion on your teaching (10 points). Research and Planning Research and Planning Develop your understanding of the issue and how to teach about it by research in professional journals. Your text gives citations of appropriate resources. Choose one short paper or excerpt to provide to your classmates one week before you present. Include your references and materials for your lesson, APA style (5 points, complete, appropriate, timely). Also include your references in the materials section of the lesson plan. 2 Honolulu is the capital Hula is the state dance The State of Hawaii is comprised of eight major islands: Hawaii, Maui, Kahoolawe, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niiahu. 75% of Hawaii's people live on Oahu. Hawaii was originally ruled by Polynesian monarchs before it became a republic in It makes half of the area of the Island of Hawaii. Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on Earth. It is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, erupting 15 times since The last eruption was in There were four different time periods. Ancient Times Monarchy Years Territorial Years Statehood to Present Ancient Times & Monarchy History of Hawaii Hawaii was settled by the Polynesians who navigated in canoes. The Hawaiian Islands are actually the peaks of volcanoes formed over the past 6 million years. 3 Kamehameha (The Great) was a hereditary monarch who was in rule and unified the islands. Missionaries arrived teaching religion, reading, writing, and politics. Territorial July 7, 1898 Hawaii officially became a territory of the US. The economy was based on sugar and pineapple. The biggest event that happened during this time period was the attack of Pearl Harbor. World War II began because of Japanese soldiers bombed a US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7 th, Statehood President Eisenhower declared Hawaii as the 50th state of the US on August 21, Language Ka 'Ôlelo Hawaii The Hawaiian alphabet only uses 12 letters (a, e, h, i, k, l, m, n, o, p, u, and w). 4 Kanaloa.More information: Lono is a fertility and music god. Papa is the mother Earth, wife of the sky god, Wakea, who, as a giant bird, laid an egg which became the island Hawaii. Wakea and Papa then lived there as the first man and woman. Pele is a goddess associated with volcanoes and lava. There are many songs and hula dances about Pele. Many other gods and goddesses were a part of the Hawaiian religion, and these are just a few. Hawaiian religion is a form of Polynesian Mythology originally followed by the inhabitants of the islands of Hawaii. Education Hawaii s educational standards are much the same as ours. Lesson ideas: coral reefs, volcanoes, hurricanes, sea turtles, government, tradition, map reading, etc. Hula Dancing Rituals -"The hula is the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people." -King Kalakaua Lei Tradition -Leis were constructed of flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, nuts, feathers, and even bone and teeth of various animals. -These garlands were worn by ancient Hawaiians to beautify themselves and distinguish themselves from others. - They also signify peace and have become recognized as the symbol of Hawaii. 4 of 6 1/13/08 2:36 PM

5 Goals and Objectives The learner will be able to understand the culture of Hawaii through learning about its history, grography, traditions, and education. Assessment The learner will demonstrate their understanding by finishing a cross-word puzzle about Hawaii and the information presented. Strategies We will incorporate several teaching strategies into our lesson. These include: lecture, technology, and class discussion. (1) Materials - Must include references Power Point Presentation of Hawaii, Cross-word puzzle (one for each student), Hawaiian punch and pineapple, plates, forks, cups References of 6 1/13/08 2:36 PM

6 Reflection Presentation on Issue in Multicultural Education Being that all members of our group are elementary education majors, we chose to teach about a different culture; the culture of Hawaii. The lesson is intended for elementary age students. We chose the culture of Hawaii because it is something that we are familiar with and we thought it would be very interesting; something that others can relate to. We had some prior knowledge about Hawaii, and none of our group members came with any assumptions or biases. None of our members felt any discomfort in talking about Hawaii; we were all pretty comfortable with the topic. Also, we did not think that our classmates would feel any discomfort in talking about the culture of Hawaii. We thought our classmates would enjoy the presentation and learn something about Hawaii that they did not already know. Our indicators of their learning were the cross-word puzzle and the class discussion. The strategies we thought would be the most effective were the lecture and the crossword puzzle. Hawaii is a pretty fun topic to explore and there are several items that could be furthered explored across all subject areas.
