Use a ruler to measure the length of the diameter. Record the findings. Wrap a string around the circular objects once. Mark the string, and measure its length. Record the findings. Repeat with different size objects. Graph the ordered pair (d, c) on a coordinate plane; divide the circumference by the diameter. Compare the results. The student will use selected measurement tools to find length Generating and testing hypotheses HIGH PERFORMING STUDENT Activities: Derive AVERAGE a formula for PERFORMING the circumference STUDENT of a circle. SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES WHOLE GROUP Activities: Hands on Lab Using graph paper, draw a rectangle and count the squares to find the area. Discuss quicker ways to count the squares l x w also the formula for area. Cut off a corner of the rectangle and place it at the opposite side. Notice the area is the same. Derive the formula for area of a parallelogram. Next find the formula for the area of a triangle by cutting a rectangle in half. Finally find the area of a trapezoid by cutting a trapezoid in half to form a parallelogram. Questioning and Cues HIGH PERFORMING STUDENT Activities: AVERAGE PERFORMING STUDENT How might we justify that the area of a rectangle is similar to the area of a parallelogram?
