1 Introduction to Medical Terminology Mr. States Room D , ext Course Description Through the study of medical terminology the student will be introduced to the language of medicine. Students will gain an understanding of basic elements, rules of building and analyzing medical words, and medical terms associated with the body as a whole. Utilizing a systems approach, the student will define, interpret, and pronounce medical terms relating to structure and function, pathology, diagnosis, clinical procedures. Course Outline Unit 1 Foundations of Medical Terminology 1. Tools for Building Medical Terms 2. Medicine and Its Specialties 3. Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Surgical Terms 4. Diseases and Disorders 5. Prefixes 6. Organization of the Body 7. Body Fluids and Immunity Unit 2 Body Systems 8. Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems 9. Respiratory System 10. Digestive System 11. Urinary System *12. Reproductive System *13. Reproductive and Sexually Transmitted Diseases 14. Musculoskeletal System 12. Nervous System and Psychologic Disorders 13. Integumentary System 14. 2 Required Materials What do I need to bring to class? A blue or black pen, or dark pencil A three ring binder for your notebook Homework assignments Optional; colored pens or pencils Course rules and expectations Class Rules You are at a point in your life when you are expected to act with some maturity. I will assume that you know what is and what is not acceptable behavior in the classroom and lab. All school rules as they are stated in the KHS student and parent handbook. The Kimball High School Tardy Policy as listed in the Student Handbook will be followed. School policy for tardies (per semester) are strictly enforced: First 2 tardies are warnings. 3 rd -4 th tardy: student get 20 minutes of detention and parents are contacted 5 th -6 th tardy: student referral to Assistant Principal for Saturday school. Parents contacted. 7 th tardy is a referral to the Assistant Principal. It will be in your best interest to be to class on time, with all of the materials needed for class and ready to work. Textbooks are a class set to be left in the classroom. If you would like to check a book out for the night, come see me after school to sign out for one. The book must be returned before school the following day! You are taking a class in a laboratory classroom. Due to the possibility of contamination, no gum, food or drinks will be allowed in class at any time. Do not disturb or distract from the learning of others. If your actions have a negative effect on the learning of others you do not belong in this class and will be removed. Consequences (depending on severity) First time - Warning Second time Teacher-parent contact Third Time Student sent to AP with referral Serious offence - referral to Assistant Principal What if I am late with an assignment or absent? Late assignments They are not accepted unless you contact Mr. States before the assignment is due and site a valid reason for not having your assignment done. Excused absences: Absent work will be accepted under the following conditions: You will be allowed 1 day for every day of your excused absences to turn in work. Any work turned in after this period will be accepted for 50% credit. (for example, if you are out of class for an excused absence of 2 days, you will have two days after you return to make up missed assignments) 2
3 It is your responsibility to find out what you missed during your absence. Ask your classmates what you missed and then come to me for any missed assignments. If you participate in a sport that may take you away from class from time to time, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to get the work you will miss BEFORE your absence from class Make up work must be turned in on time. Remember that it is your responsibility to find out what assignments you missed and make them up. If you do class work in the support room, it is your responsibility to see that it gets to me on a timely manner. If I do not receive your work, I can t give your credit for it. Unexcused absences: If the absence is unexcused for any reason including home suspensions, no make up work will be accepted. Make-up work will be provided for in-school suspensions (support room) Academic Dishonesty Will not be tolerated and the policy will be followed as it is stated in the student handbook. Homework Policy (see board policy 6154 in student handbook) Homework is an important part of introduction to medical terminology. It is important to read the textbook, study the vocabulary terms, answer questions from the book and worksheets. Do not try to rush through it and get it done in class or think that you will have time to finish it the day it is due. The purpose of homework is to practice what you have been taught in class. It is vital that you do the homework and study for tests and quizzes to do well in biology. Late work will not be accepted! You are responsible for keeping yourself organized by writing down and doing your assignments on time. Grading Policy How will I be graded? One of the most important parts of your grade is your coursework. It must be neat, legible and written in dark blue or black ink (pencil is fine too). You will need to keep all of your coursework in your notebook. Your notebook must be neat, organized, and complete. The notebook is extremely easy to maintain, please remember its importance. Notebook: Not all assignments are collected for grading; some assignments will be given credit in the notebook only. Everything must be kept in chronological order. Your notebook should be organized with the first assignment we did (this course description) and ending with the most recent assignment. Grades: Based on tests, classwork, quizzes, and participation. 3
4 Grading Scale 93 to 100% = A 80 to 82% = B- 67 to 69% = D+ 90 to 92% = A- 77 to 79% = C+ 63 to 66% = D 87 to 89% = B+ 73 to 76% = C 60 to 62% = D- 83 to 86% = B 70 to 72% = C- Below 60% = F Please seek out extra help from me if you do not understand the material.
