3 LETTER FROM THE HEAD, March 2018 Dear Applicant Thank you for expressing an interest in the post of Head of Chemistry at Sacred Heart High School. This is a full-time, permanent post and the information we are sending will, I hope, give you some idea of what Sacred Heart High School is like. The information contained in this pack includes the school s Mission Statement and Aims. The school s vision and spirit are summed up in this document, which also provides the basis for decision making, strategic planning and the monitoring and evaluation of all aspects of provision. It is most important that you feel able to be enthusiastic about supporting and implementing the Mission Statement. Sacred Heart High School is an exceptional school (Ofsted September 2017) in the trusteeship of the Society of the Sacred Heart and belongs to a large global network of schools. The pupils and staff are exceptional people to work with. Behaviour and relationships are excellent and are steeped in our strong ethos, philosophy of education and Sacred Heart traditions. We have recently opened the Calder building which houses our new science laboratories and Sports Hall and have increased our intake in year 7 by an additional form. Year on year, our examination results demonstrate the excellent education and teaching our pupils receive. In 2017, 94.9% of pupils gained 5+ standard passes and 93% gained 5+ standard passes including English and Maths. The school s A Level results, following the opening of a Sixth Form in September 2013, are just as outstanding with 62.7% achieving A*-B and 89.8% achieving A*-C. Science is an outstanding department which achieves excellent examination results. In 2017, the GCSE results (A*-C) were: Additional 90.4%, Physics 98.4%, Chemistry 98.4% and Biology 98.4% and the A2 results (A*-B) were: Physics 62.5%, Chemistry 64.7% and Biology 46.2%. As a designated National Teaching School this is an excellent place to work either as an NQT or as someone who has some experience and who is hoping to develop yet further. The development of all staff is a priority for us and we have well designed induction and development courses for staff at all stages of their career. 7 JOB DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE ROLE Job Title: Head of Chemistry Department Salary: MPS/UPS + TLR2C ( 6,515pa) Hours of Work: Full Time, Permanent, from September 2018 Responsible to: Head of Science JOB PURPOSE To uphold the mission statement, philosophy traditions and ethos of the school. To support, hold accountable, develop, monitor and lead a team of teachers and support staff within the Chemistry department to deliver high standards of teaching and professional practice. To be accountable for high standards of learning, pupil progress, improved attainment and support and challenge for pupils. To comply with the range of duties and responsibilities of teachers as set out in the current School Teachers Pay and Conditions document, and with the duties defined in the core job description attached. To ensure that the teaching of Chemistry courses is rated as outstanding in all key stages. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES A. Raise Attainment To raise attainment and maintain standards in the department in all key stages to ensure outstanding progress for all. B. Teaching and Learning To plan, prepare and deliver outstanding lessons to provide pupils with the opportunity to achieve their potential. To ensure that lessons are engaging and stimulating taking into account individual needs of the pupils across the department. To ensure that practical lessons are a key feature of all teaching and learning plans and to develop a departmental policy specifying how they will be carried out to ensure they are of high quality and meet health and safety requirements. To oversee the development and production of high quality teaching and learning plans which support staff in delivering outstanding lessons. To manage, develop and share resources to enhance teaching of Chemistry. To monitor the progress and achievement of the pupils following the course and identify the appropriate intervention strategies for underachieving students. To keep records of pupils progress and achievement and ensure appropriate targets are set across the department that stretch and challenge all pupils. To ensure all teachers in the department set relevant homework and mark it providing the pupils with meaningful feedback. 7

8 To implement and evaluate the departmental assessment policy to ensure that marking and assessment impact positively on pupils achievement leading to outstanding progress. C. Extra-Curricular Ensure that a varied programme of extra-curricular historical activities is offered to pupils Contribute to school and departmental clubs, societies and activities and share in the organisation of extra-curricular activities such as residential field courses and other whole school enrichment activities Co-ordination of the Chemistry activities for the annual STEAM week. D. Curriculum and Assessment Provision and Development To develop, in consultation with the Head of Science and Deputy Head (Curriculum, Teaching and Learning) and members of the department, a broad and balanced range of relevant courses / modules which stimulate pupils interest and engagement in learning, and are appropriate to the needs of all pupils at the school including A Level, GCSE and other qualifications that may be introduced in the future. To work with the Head of Department to ensure that teaching, learning and assessment procedures meet whole school and external high standards. To lead/oversee curriculum development, including the development of appropriate syllabuses, resources, schemes of work to school format, teaching, assessment and marking policies which support the school s implementation of all current statutory requirements. To respond actively to national, regional and local developments and initiatives, including content, pedagogy and assessment. To liaise with the Exams Officer to maintain accreditation with the relevant examination and validating bodies. To ensure that there is a departmental presence at the start of every external examination in the subject. To ensure the accuracy of exam entries and data. To encourage collaborative projects in conjunction with other departments within and beyond the learning area, and outside the school s formal timetable involving where appropriate, other staff and other schools, including feeder primaries. To encourage, facilitate and participate in the development of ICT within the department to promote independence and high levels of engagement in learning. To attend appropriate professional development courses, to co-ordinate departmental professional development opportunities, to contribute to whole school CPD programmes with a view to developing and disseminating good practice. E. Monitoring and Evaluation To carry out departmental self- review in line with whole school policy and develop a departmental improvement plan for Chemistry To participate in the termly monitoring of Chemistry teaching and learning as per whole school calendar To coordinate the production and maintenance of a departmental handbook. 8

9 To be accountable for the implementation of school policies and procedures within the department. To play an active role as a middle leader in whole school development. To ensure that the work of the department promotes a positive ethos and encourages spiritual, social and moral responsibility through adherence to the school mission statement and aims. Manage the departmental stock, teaching resources and finances efficiently in order to achieve the aims of the school and the department. Draw and implement the Department Development Plan and prepare a departmental SEF. To analyse and interpret relevant national, local and school data and inspection evidence to inform policies, practice and expectations and teaching methods. F. Staffing To lead the department by example through modelling excellent professional practice. To promote teamwork and motivate staff to ensure effective working relations. To be responsible for the day-to-day management and deployment of staff, including support staff and to be mindful of work/life balance. To oversee arrangement for classes when staff are absent, ensuring proper cover work is provided, and that the cover teacher is aware of work to be done. To be a team leader in performance management and the professional development of staff. To oversee the induction and monitoring of new staff in the department, and to ensure that NQTs and School Direct Trainees are appropriately monitored and supported. Effectively line manage members of the department. With the Head of Department and leadership team, plan for the staffing needs of the department, and to participate in the recruitment and selection of staff. G. Monitoring of Learning and Behaviour To oversee the academic progress of students in the department by regularly monitoring their academic progress and using student data and target setting to ensure that each student is reaching their potential. To implement effective plans/interventions to tackle underperformance. To monitor students attendance, punctuality and behaviour in lessons, ensuring that follow-up procedures are adhered to and that appropriate action is taken where necessary. To co-ordinate, monitor and develop provision for EAL, SEND (incl. pupils with EHCP) and moreable students in the department. 9

10 To monitor the teaching and work of the department, including the planning and preparation and delivery of lessons, the keeping of records as per our Learning and Living Behaviour policy and reports to parents. H. Administration In liaison with the Head of Department and School Business Manager School create, and implement the departmental budget in line with the school improvement plan. Hold regular Departmental Meetings, retaining minutes, to review progress and give any assistance needed to implement the department s programme. These meetings should ensure that there is effective communication and a unified sense of purpose within the department. Represent the department in all matters within the school such as attendance at Heads of Department meetings; liaising with other departments, Directors of Learning, the Exams Officer and parents, on all matters concerning the department. Organise the setting and marking of internal exams. Ensure that the departmental stock and equipment are well cared for and economically used. Keep the department within its budget, advising the Head of Department of equipment and resourcing requirements and producing annual review of the budget as part of monitoring of the work of the department Supervise the work of support and technical staff and monitor items relating to the safety of pupils and staff. Ensure that the departmental rooms present a stimulating environment for pupils. Attend transition Open Evenings and other events where a presence of Heads of Department are required I. Health and Safety Ensure that the Chemistry department complies with all current Health and Safety legislation in line with department and school policy; Ensure teachers are aware of risk assessments procedures (as directed by the HOD) and contribute to the update of department policy on a regular basis; Model best practice in this area and work with the science technicians to monitor staff actions in this area. J. Communications To provide written reports and other information as required. To hold departmental meetings and other CPD activities, with minutes kept and distributed as required. To oversee the departments presence at school functions and ensuring effective communication and consultation between the department and parents. If possible, to be available in school following the publication of GCSE and A level results in the summer holidays 10

11 K. General Matters To take a full part in the wider life of the school including being fully involved in extracurricular activities. To assist in such duties and activities relating to the general administration and control of the school as the Headteacher and Governing Body shall, from time to time, reasonably require. 12 PERSON SPECIFICATION SELECTION CRITERIA Head of Chemistry The applicant will demonstrate: 1. Appropriate professional qualifications; 2. Willingness to contribute actively to the ethos and aims of the school as expressed in the school s Mission Statement; 3. Firm understanding of Key Stages 3-5: GCSE and A Level Chemistry; 4. Ability to teach Chemistry to GCSE and A Level to a high standard; 5. Evidence of successful teaching of Chemistry at GCSE and A-level, with at least three years experience and at least two sets of GCSE and A-level results; 6. The ability to work well with others as a member of a team in the planning and implementation of all aspects of the National Curriculum in Science and the demands of high quality A Level Science; 7. Ability to use and promote a wide range of teaching and learning styles that support the student and the effective delivery of Science; 8. Thorough knowledge of safety procedures; 9. A commitment to Equal Opportunities; 10. The ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing for a wide variety of purposes; 11.
