1 The Word in Third P.S. 26Q Third Grade Edition June 2015 Classroom Happenings Getting Ready for 4 th Grade Unit of Study: Math Essential Question: How can geometric shapes help me solve real-world problems? CCLS: 3.G.A- Geometry Students will reasons with shapes and their attributes. Parent Involvement: Continue to review attributes of twodimensional geometric shapes and partition them into parts with equal areas. Unit of Study: Reading Essential Question: How do we determine the central message of a story? CCLS: RL.3.2 Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text. Parent Involvement: Share your favorite fairytales or folktales with your children and ask them to determine the moral. Unit of Study: Writing Essential Question: How do we write our opinion about a topic that will convince the reader to think a certain way or do something using reasons and facts? CCLS: W.3.10 Write routinely over extended time frames for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. Parental Involvement: Have your child tell about a time that they had a strong opinion about an idea, topic, or a community issue. Over the summer have your child: Review multiplication and division facts. Read daily in order to maintain their current reading level. Keep a diary or journal in order to improve their writing skills. Thank you to all of the students and their families for making our annual Living Museum celebration a success! 2 Tech It Easy P.S. 26Q Computer/Math Mrs. Georgatos What We ve Been Doing WANTED POSTERS SEARCHING THE NET 3rd Grade May/June 2015 Students worked in pairs to brainstorm and create WANTED posters of one of the four Webville Outlaws Meet-Me-Mack, Wanta-Know-Wally, Look-at- Dis Louie, and Potty Mouth Pete. Where We re Going This next unit in Computers is all about using search engines to find information on the internet. Students will be introduced to Google searches and various ways to filter their searches to be as meaningful as possible. While searching can be done on any search engine, we will be focusing on Google. We will also be discussing the importance of citing where information comes from on the Internet. This unit is starting later than expected due to Spring Break and the State Tests. What You Can Do How do I use the web to search for information? Create an internet scavenger hunt for your child by giving them a topic of your choosing. Ask him/her to find specific information using the guidelines s/he will be learning in Computers to refine their searching. Don t forget to visit our school s new website at This website will be updated regularly to keep you informed about what s going on at P.S.26. It has links to the school s DOE website and our Portaportal webpage as well.
3 P.S. 26 Q Ms. Wilson s Science Newsletter Mid May June 2015 Issue Super Science Times E xciting Third Grade Explorations! The third grade is finished with our Simple Machines Unit. We learned all of the six simple machines, how they work, how they make our lives easier, how force and friction affect how simple machines move, and we answered the essential question of how do simple machines help us move objects? Beginning in the middle of May and continuing on to the end of June, third graders will be exploring our final unit of Energy. We will be observing, identifying, and describing a variety of forms of energy, identifying the evidence for energy transformations and how humans use energy transformations, exploring the interaction of matter and energy and describing different ways in which heat can be released. Science connections you can do in your home: Think about the activities you do every day like brushing your teeth, eating, and turning on the lights. Write down all the different activities you do in one day. Questions to ask: Look back at your activity log, what type of energy did you use for each of the activities? Science connections outside your home: Look at the world around you and all of the things that go on outside like children playing, cars running, dogs walking. Compare and contrast the activities from outside to the activities inside your house. Questions to ask: How are the activities the same, do they use the same types of energy inside the home as the outside? Are there any activities that use different types of energy? What is Essential Question of the Energy Unit: What are some ways that energy can be changed from one form to another? Important unit vocabulary words: Sound Heat Chemical Mechanical Transformation Pitch Vibration Volume Conduction

Sneakers only please Bring water bottle Wear sunscreen Wear a hat or baseball cap Parents are always welcomed. Please follow schedule that will be sent home for your child s class time. Field day will take place in our school yard in the back of the school. Please send in a change of clothes because there will be a water can relay race During the months of May and June, the students will be exploring beach ball volleyball, balloon volley, and assorted relay games including potato sack races, spoon races and scooter fun. In addition the students will be exploring tennis and badminton. We are preparing for a fun filled Field Day on June 5 th! The students will be completing their Mighty Milers program and I am so proud to say that all our children will be receiving a t-shirt and medal for achieving their goals! Looking forward to running with them again in the fall. Great job boys and girls! Mission accomplished! Stay Fit, Stay Active! Wishing everyone a happy,healthy summer and I will see you in September! Essential Questions: How do we stay hydrated during the summer months? What can you learn from being on a team? What activities can I do to stay fit? Summer Reminders: Remember to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen. Enjoy all outdoor activities, such as swimming, running, bike riding, skipping and walking/jogging.
