1 Cooperative Work Experience Education Fall 2016 Syllabus (16-Week Session: Aug 26-Dec 16, 2016) (12-Week Session: Sept 26 Dec 16, 2016) General: WEG 095 A-F (1-6 units) & Occupational: AGEH, ECE, BUMA, NR, HS, ACR, CM, AUTO, FIRE, etc. 095 A-H (1-8 units) Instructor: Michelle Richards Phone/ (760) , Website: Office: Administration Building Room 9 (Admin-9), (43500 Monterey Ave, Palm Desert, CA 92260) Hours: Monday-Friday: 8am-5pm (Best time to catch us in the office is Mon-Fri: 8-1 but not the only time) Mailbox: You may slide paperwork under office door (building doors open Mon-Thurs: 8am-5pm, Fri: 8-1) Course Description: This work experience class of supervised employment is designed to assist students to acquire desirable work habits, attitudes, and skills so as to enable them to become productive employees. This course also provides students with career awareness for jobs. Units in the General section may be accrued at a rate of 1-6 units per semester for a maximum of 16 units (combined total of all WE units). General Work Experience (WEG) is available to students whose jobs are not related to their educational or occupational goal. Units in an Occupational section may be accrued at a rate of 1-8 units per semester for a maximum of 16 units (combined total of all WE units). Occupational WE is available to students who are either volunteers or employees in occupational fields related to their educational or occupational goal. Students must work 75 paid hours or 60 non-paid hours/unit. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate employment skills under actual working conditions. 2. Apply career goals of classroom theory to real life experience. 3. Demonstrate an increase in self-identity and confidence as a worker through individual attention given by instructor/coordinator and employer. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of his/her own abilities in the work environment. 5. Explain an understanding of human relations. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of how to approach the job market. 7. Apply work experience education on future job applications. 8. Develop new or expanded job objectives each semester of enrollment. Student Learning Outcome #1: Given the task of writing three learning objectives based on work related duties, demonstrate competent and appropriate completion of each objective which increases performance, improves efficiency and enhances skills in the workplace. Student Learning Outcome #2: Given normal tasks based on actual working conditions, demonstrate competent and appropriate employment skills which enhances an understanding of human relations, increases self-identity and confidence, applies career goals of classroom theory to real life experience, utilizes work experience education on future job applications and clarifies individual abilities in the work environment. Text: No textbook required. However, an application packet is available to pick up in the office or online. The required application consists of two pages and are to be turned in by the due date (which is by the first day or two of class depending on semester, see page 2). Work Experience Basics A combination of General and Occupational sections my never exceed 16 units at a college level institution. Work Experience units count as electives toward an AA at COD, some majors require it and others allow it to count in the major electives and are transferable to the CSU system (not the UC system) Students must have job/internship lined up prior to class start date Register for an Occupational WE section only if your educational or occupational goal match the field you are working in Notify your WE Instructor of any job &/or personal contact changes immediately It is the student s responsibility to drop & complete/arrange all requirements. Instructor may not drop students If you have a DSPS approved accessibility concern, talk to me & I will be happy to accommodate your needs Job-site must be within 2 hours of COD (must seek permission for anything else) Students will be assigned a Work Experience Instructor (Michelle works with most but when an expert in your field is available you will be assigned that person instead). Be sure to check with the office to find your assignment during the first week of the semester Students are responsible to plan, arrange, turn-in, & meet all requirements. A minimum of 2 points will be subtracted /day for being late (depending on assignment) Suggestion: Use one calendar for all of your class assignments, papers, deadlines, test dates, etc., keep it with you & refer to it daily. Type a 1-2 page summary (12pt font, double spaced, 1 margins) on what you learned, also include your profile results and two jobs that are best fits for you as well as the salary and job outlook for both 2. Job Search Videos: COD Job Hub Click my channels listen to 5 videos you are interested in, type a 1-2 page summary (12pt font, double spaced, 1 margins) on what you learned. *you may watch it from the COD Job Hub App or online. 3. Mock Interview (requires recording ability). COD Job Hub, click My Prep. Follow the instructions & complete a mock interview via the link. Type a 1-2 page summary (12pt font, double spaced, 1 margins) explain how you felt about the experience, what you learned about yourself, what you will work on as a result, and whether you think this was of benefit to you & why 4. Resume: Professional, up-to-date and ready to use immediately. Free resume template: You MUST us your COD . If you already have a resume you will need to update it and make it better. (Place & Leuschner require this option) 5. LinkedIn: Create a LinkedIn account, type a 1-2 page summary (12 point font, double spaced, 1 margins) of how and why to use LinkedIn as well as the positive and negative possibilities of using social media in relation to employment (include the direct link to your account) 6. Time Management System: Create a time management system that works for you. It must include: 1. Semester schedule with all readings, tests, & assignments 2. Weekly Schedule of your time which includes time slots accounting for studying, eating, class, work, free time, etc. See Michelle for suggestions. Turn in a copy of your semester schedule and a schedule for one week. 7. Career & Workforce Solutions Center Workshop: Attend one workshop in the center and type a 1-2 page summary of what you learn (12 pt font, double spaced, 1 margins). 3 Midterm Coaching (Schedule & complete by the due date) Schedule this with you & your Work Experience Instructor (on campus). Be prepared to discuss: progress on goals, total hours, upcoming requirements, & set a date for the Final Job-Site Visit. Final Job Site Visit (Schedule for Nov/Dec, get it on the schedule early) Schedule this with you, your supervisor & your Work Experience Instructor (at your job site). Objectives will need to be met as you & your supervisor you will evaluate them at that time. Your supervisor will also grade you on the 10 basics below. (Takes about 20 min) 1. Student s Self-Rating of 3 Objectives: (Up to 75 pts) 25=Excelled, 20=Accomplished, 15=Made some progress, 0=No significant progress 2. Supervisor s Rating of 3 Objectives: (Up to 75 pts) 25=Excelled, 20=Accomplished, 15=Made some progress, 0=No significant progress 3.
