An electronic textbook is included on ALEKS. Online Access (Required): You must purchase ALEKS online access and enroll in ALEKS Course Code FK6AD-JEUWH by Thursday August 27. Students not enrolled by August 27 will be dropped from the class. ALEKS enrollment takes the place of buying a textbook. ALEKS includes an electronic version of the text, so you do not need to purchase a printed textbook. Follow the instructions on p. 5 of the syllabus to enroll in our ALEKS course. Access may be purchased directly at using a credit card ($89 for 18-week access; longer access available). You can delay payment for two weeks using the temporary access financial aid code 9CB43- C724F-0D BB. If you are on an EOPS grant and need to purchase through the FC bookstore (about $116), you must place a special order in the bookstore and pay in advance. ALEKS can be accessed using tablets and smartphones, but desktop or laptop computers are recommended. If you have trouble logging onto ALEKS, try using a different browser or restarting your computer. If you have technical difficulties, contact ALEKS technical support: support.aleks.com, or (714) MATERIALS NEEDED: 1. ALEKS access enroll by Thursday August 27 or you will be dropped from the class. 2. PENCIL and eraser - please do all work in pencil 3. Scientific calculator graphing calculators and cell phones are NOT permitted 4. Printer to print out worksheets and documents posted online. If needed, you can print in campus computer labs (Room 2200 or 511) or the library (800 building). The library printers take cash. For the computer labs, see for how to purchase printing credit. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Prerequisite: MATH 020 F with a grade of C or better, or math skills clearance. This course includes products and factoring, exponents and radicals, fractions, functions and graphs, linear and quadratic equations, linear inequalities, logarithms and related topics at an intermediate level. 2 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of MATH 040 F Intermediate Algebra, the student will be able to: 1. Identify an equation as linear, quadratic, radical, rational, exponential, or logarithmic, and solve the equation using an appropriate method. 2. Produce the completely factored form of a polynomial. 3. Perform operations on and simplify polynomials, rational expressions, radical expressions, logarithmic expressions, or exponential expressions at an intermediate level. 4. Evaluate a function with a numerical or variable argument, and produce the graph of the function by plotting points. Note: In a college course, it is expected that you will spend 3 hours per week for every 1 unit earned. This is a 4 unit class, so 12 hours per week are required. Since we meet on campus only 2 hours per week, this means you should plan to spend at least 10 hours per week outside of class working in ALEKS, watching the videos and explanations online, completing practice quizzes and tests, studying, etc. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Since this is a hybrid class, you will be doing the majority of work for the class online. ALEKS will guide you through any material you need to learn/master one topic at a time. ALEKS provides explanations, text pages, and videos for each topic, then you practice the topic in ALEKS. In class, we will use our time for brief lectures on areas of confusion, team activities to enforce and deepen your understanding, and assessing what you have learned. 1. Midterm (450 points) and Final Exam (600 points) 50% of grade For the midterm, you may use one half sheet of 8½ x11 paper with notes on ONE side only. Your notes must be handwritten or typed by you. For the final, you may use one whole sheet of notes, ONE side. 2. Quizzes (25 points each) 10% of grade See schedule on page 6-10 of syllabus. You may use ONE side of a 3x5 card for most quizzes. 3. ALEKS Objectives (50 points per week) 25% of grade See schedule on page 6-10 of syllabus. There are two objective goals each week, due on day night and day night. The ALEKS system will not allow you to work on an objective after the due date. Any topics you do not master within one objective will pour over into the next. That means if you do not finish an objective on time, you will lose the points and also make your next objective longer, so be sure to keep up with the schedule. 4. Worksheets 10% of grade See schedule on page 6-10 of syllabus. These worksheets including practice quizzes (20 pts each) and practice tests (50 pts each) are posted on MyGateway under Files by due date. Print and complete using pencil; submit in class. Optional extra credit worksheets may be posted throughout the semester. 5. Class Participation (10 points per day) 5% of grade To earn full participation credit, you must be on time, stay in class until dismissal, and fully participate in all activities. Each item borrowed from the instructor (calculator, pencil, etc.) costs 2 participation points. 3 ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION POLICY Participation in both the in-class and online portions of the class are required. You may be dropped for lack of participation in either portion. Online: You may be dropped from the class for any of the following: **Not enrolling in ALEKS course code FK6AD-JEUWH by Thursday August 27 **Expired ALEKS temporary access **Missing two or more ALEKS objective deadlines In-class: You should only miss class for serious and compelling reasons, e.g. illness, death in the family, emergency, etc. If you must miss class, you must contact me by by the end of the day of the absence. Missed class time is made up in the Math Lab (Room 807) within two weeks of the missed class. To make up a full day s absence, you will spend 1 hour 55 minutes (115 minutes) in the Math Lab (scan out then back in halfway through if staying more than 2 hours). You will complete a makeup assignment in the Math Lab and turn it in to the staff in the Lab. This will make up missed participation points. For partial absences, make up the amount of class time missed. If you finish the makeup assignment before your full time is complete, work on other math assignments in the lab until your missed time is completely made up. If you missed a quiz, ask the staff for the makeup quiz. **1 st absence (or 2 hours) MAY make up in Math Lab within two weeks to make up missed participation and quiz points **2 nd absence (or 2 hours) MUST make up in Math Lab within two weeks or you will be dropped from the class **3 rd absence (or 2 hours) you will be dropped from the class Student Withdrawal: Fullerton College considers it to be the responsibility of the student to drop a class through Admissions and Records if he or she wishes to withdraw. If you wish to withdraw from this class by your choice, it is your responsibility to do so through Webstar. Deadline to withdraw from any Fullerton College class: Sunday November 15 MAKE-UP POLICY: Midterm and Final Exams: No makeups. Quizzes: Make up in the Math Lab - ask the staff at the counter for the makeup quiz by number and date it was given in class. Limit three makeup quizzes total may be used for missed quizzes or to earn a higher score. Your graded makeup quiz will not be returned to you since other students will be taking the makeup quiz at various times. ALEKS Objectives: The ALEKS system will not allow access to objectives past the due date. Any topics you do not master within one objective will pour over into the next, but you cannot make up the missed points. Worksheets: Late worksheets and review sheets may be submitted with a penalty of 20% per week late. If you are absent, you must send me the worksheets by 10:00 AM that day for them to be counted on time. 4 FULLERTON COLLEGE MATHEMATICS DIVISION SELECTED COLLEGE POLICIES ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY Students are expected to abide by ethical standards in preparing and presenting material which demonstrates their level of knowledge and which is used to determine grades. Such a report will be accompanied by supporting evidence and documentation. Repeated violations may result in students receiving an F in the course, suspension or dismissal from the College. CHILDREN ON CAMPUS Children are not allowed on campus unless supervised by a parent or guardian. Children may not attend classes or computer labs (unless the course is specifically designed to include children.) Children must be supervised so educational activities are not interrupted and may not be left unattended in common areas such as the library, student center, food services area, quad or college parking lots. EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATEMENT Take note of the safety features in and around the classroom. Also, please study the posted evacuation routes. The most direct route of exit may not be the safest. Running out of the building during earthquakes may be dangerous. During strong earthquakes, it is recommended to duck, cover, and hold until the quaking stops. Follow the guidance of your instructor. Your cooperation during emergencies can minimize the possibility of injury to yourself and others. You may purchase copies of these publications at the campus bookstore, or you may read them online at the Fullerton College website, STANDARDS OF STUDENT CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE POLICY The standards of student conduct and disciplinary action for violation of Board Policy 5500 were approved by the NOCCCD Board on January 28, 2003, and were drawn in compliance with Sections 66300, 76030, 76033, 76034, of the State Education Code. Students are expected to respect and obey civil and criminal law and shall be subject to the legal penalties for violation of the city, county, state, and national law(s). Student conduct must conform to Board Policy and college regulations and procedures. As cited in BP5500, A student who violates the standards of student conduct shall be subject to disciplinary action including, but not limited to, the removal, suspension or expulsion of the student. Students have an obligation to familiarize themselves with the College s policies, rules and regulations and to conduct themselves in a reasonable, respectful manner, which is conducive toward attaining their educational goal. Upon registration, each student should obtain a copy of the College Policies and Regulations: Standards of Student Conduct and Discipline Policy. Contained therein are the policies approved by the Board of Trustees governing student behavior and the applicable penalties for violations of these policies. Copies are available in the Student Affairs Office, the Office of Equity and Diversity, all division offices, and the Student Services office. WAIT TIME FOR LATE INSTRUCTORS If, due to unforeseen emergencies, the instructor does not arrive at the scheduled start time for class, students are to wait for fifteen minutes (unless otherwise notified by the division). If they do not receive notification to wait for their instructor to arrive, after 15 minutes the students may leave with no penalty for absence or assigned work due for that class meeting. Step 3: Verify our Course on the Confirm Enrollment Information page: Fall 2015 Math 40 day. Click Continue (or (Modify) if not correct). Step 4: Select whether or not you have used ALEKS before and click on Continue. ***If you have used ALEKS before, you will be prompted to enter your existing login and password. You can retrieve your login information by clicking on I forgot my login information. ***If you have not used ALEKS before, enter an access code or purchase one online. You may enter the financial aid code 9CB43-C724F-0D BB ( 0 is numeral zero) to delay payment for up to two weeks. Step 5: Once you complete the registration steps, you will be in our ALEKS course. You will go through a Tools Tutorial, (takes about 10 minutes), and will then be prompted to begin your initial knowledge check (takes about minutes). Step 6 - Initial Knowledge Check: IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO DO YOUR BEST (without help) as this will determine which topics will be in your personalized ALEKS course. Do the initial knowledge check in one sitting where you can concentrate and do your best. You will need scratch paper. Takes about minutes.
