3 In this document you will find a sample assignment brief for Application of Number, Communication, and ICT. This assignment brief will help you to meet the requirements of your Key Skills assessment. The assignment is based on scenarios you may encounter in your day-to-day job to make it more relevant to you. 1

4 Planning a business trip to Paris Scenario Your manager has asked you to research hotels in Paris for his next business trip. He is planning to take his wife and another colleague with him; they are staying for one night. Carry out research into hotels in Paris, and suggest the most appropriate hotel based on cost and value for money. Report back to your manager justifying your findings. The business trip is planned for July; your manager has asked you to research the weather in Paris at this time and inform the staff who are attending. Task 1. From the information you have been given (Source 1), calculate the prices for all the hotels for a single and a double room. 2. Decide on two hotels that are in the middle price bracket and carry out further research on the hotels, including prices and facilities. 3. Read the information you have found for the hotels and decide on the most appropriate hotel for your manager. 4. Calculate the total cost of the hotel for your manager, his wife, his colleague Fazz, and the finance team. Present this information using either a chart or a diagram. 5. Use the information you have found and appropriate ICT software to develop your findings into a draft document. Remember to keep the preparation notes that you made for your discussion. You are required to provide evidence of saving your work; this could be a screenshot. Remember to write in sentences, using capital letters, full stops and paragraphs. Remember to sign your work to prove that you did it. 2

5 What you need to do 1: Work out the cost of hotel rooms Using Source 1, work out the prices of a double and a single room for each of the ten hotels on the list. must include all your calculations. must show that you can carry out manual calculations; use a calculator; check that your results are correct and make sense. 2: Decide on two hotels Carry out calculations to decide on two hotels which are in the middle price range and carry out further research into these hotels. You can use either the internet or travel brochures to do this. You will need to think about the facilities that the hotel offers, as this is important when you make a recommendation to your manager. must include all your calculations. must show that you can carry out manual calculations; use a calculator; check that your results are correct and make sense. must include printouts of your internet research or copies of pages from the travel brochures you have used. 3: Decide on a hotel Read the information you have found on two hotels and decide which one you are going to recommend to your manager; you may want to think about the facilities that the hotel offers and the cost. must include annotated copies of the documents you have read about the hotels, to show that you have identified the main points and ideas in the documents. Include your own notes to justify your choice of hotel. 4: Calculate the total cost of the hotel Your manager has sent you the below telling you more people are going on the business trip to Paris. 3

6 Calculate the cost of the three additional rooms and then the total cost of the hotel. Include calculations to show the cost of the additional three rooms. 9 Assessor notes This assignment brief is based on optional Unit 8: Support the organisation of business travel or accommodation, and could be used to practise the skills required for Key Skills, or the evidence produced by the apprentice could be used to contribute towards the assessment of Part B portfolio evidence for Key Skills. Supporting the apprentice Consult with the apprentice s employer if necessary. Conduct a skills scan before asking the apprentice to complete this assignment what support will they need to develop the necessary skills and knowledge? Consider how long it will take the apprentice to complete the assignment would the apprentice benefit from this assignment being split over more than one assessment visit? You may decide to use only part of the assignment brief, in which case you will need to give the apprentice clear guidance on which parts of the activity they should complete. Make sure you explain the assignment brief to the apprentice so that they know what is expected of them and how this will contribute to their Apprenticeship. Ensure that the apprentice has all the information they require before they start: for example, the appropriate source document (Source 1). Ensure that ICT facilities are available to the apprentice. Make sure that travel brochures are available for the apprentice to use. Have an address available to enable the apprentice to you as though you are their manager. Ensure that there is evidence of assessment of the discussion. The evidence produced for Task 6 should meet the criteria for C1.3 (written document); however, if this does not meet the criteria, the evidence produced for Task 11 can be use to meet the criteria for C1.3 providing the leaflet is written in sentences, using capital letters and full stops and paragraphs where appropriate. Make sure you have a copy of the QCA Key Skills Qualifications Standards and Guidance to refer to in addition to this assignment brief. Remember to include a statement of authentication with each apprentice s work, which should be signed and dated by both the apprentice and the assessor. 7
