Catalog Description of the Course PSY 1001 General Psychology. Four quarter hours. This course will provide an introduction and overview of the major principles in the field of psychology including: mental disorders, personality, social understanding, stress and coping, learning, memory, neuroscience, and consciousness. Students will also gain a broad understanding of how these areas are interconnected from a theoretical and practical worldview in addition to scientific modes of thought about behavior. Explain the link between the historical and current trends in psychology 5. Explain the nature of genetic, biological, environmental, personality, social, cognitive, emotional, and developmental factors in behavior 6. Appraise the contributions of psychological research studies. 7. Demonstrate the application of research to everyday life. 8. Assemble the material from the topics covered in a manner that promotes critical thinking. III. Texts and Materials Required Text: Feist, G. J., & Rosenberg, E. L. (2012) Psychology: Perspectives and connections 2 nd edition. New York, New York: McGraw Hill. (ISBN: ) Recommended Text (NOT REQUIRED & WILL NOT BE USED IN THIS COURSE): American Psychological Association (2009). The publication manual of the American Psychological Association. Washington, D.C.: American Psychological Association. IV. Course Topics 2

3 Course topics include but are not limited to the following: Origins of psychology, research in psychology, etiology of behavior, sensation and perception, learning and memory, human growth and development, intelligence, psychological disorders, and social behavior. V. Instructional Methods and Activities Traditional methods of teaching will include: lectures, discussions, presentations, and the use of audio/visual materials. Experiential methods of teaching will include: role-plays and participation in community/leadership activities. VI. Evaluation and Grade Assignment 1. Course Session Participation: Regular attendance and class participation are required. In class participation will consist of engaging in topic discussions. Class participation is worth five (5) points per session. 2. Paper: The paper must be ten pages in length, and written and formatted according to APA, the 6 th edition. The paper must cover a theoretical approach covered in this course, and must include major points of the theory, populations for use, major research supporting the effectiveness of the theory, as well as outcomes, and attention to issues of diversity. 3. Mid-Term Examination: The mid-term examination will be a multiple choice exam with fifty (50) questions. The exam will include content covered throughout the first five weeks of the course. You will have the entire course period to complete the examination. Every question will be worth one (1) point a piece. 4. Final Examination: The final examination will be a multiple choice exam with fifty (50) questions. The exam will include content covered after the mid-term examination. You will have the entire course period to complete the examination. Every question will be worth one (1) point a piece. Participation points will be earned based on the student s engagement in class conversation regarding assigned course readings for the week. It should be evident that students read assigned textbook and article readings for the week (i.e. bringing the textbook and articles to class for review, presenting questions about the content of the texts, and making assertions about the content as supported by existing literature). Class Attendance South University has a strict policy of attendance. As per the academic catalog pg. 144 Students who fail to attend an on-campus class session will be given an absence for that session. Following the drop/add period, students taking on-campus classes must not miss the class meetings for 14 consecutive calendar days of the scheduled class time of the on-campus class (including on-campus classes that contain an online component). If a student misses the class meetings for 14 consecutive calendar days the student will be administratively withdrawn from the course. Following the drop/add period, if a student misses the class meetings for 21 consecutive calendar days in an 11-week on-campus course that meets once per week the student will be administratively withdrawn from the course. 5

6 If there is an absence from class for any reason (excused or unexcused), it is the student s responsibility to have an understanding of material covered during the missed class time and obtain hand-outs, notes, etc., from another student, or, the professor. Students are still responsible to meet assignment deadlines. 2. Academic Integrity All students are expected to operate with integrity in their personal and professional development. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated and will be subject to disciplinary action by the professor or, the University depending on the severity of the occurrence. South University seeks to foster a spirit of honesty and integrity. Any work submitted by a student must represent original work produced by that student, and all work must be submitted using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th Edition (2009). Washington DC: American Psychological Association (APA) format. Please refer to 2.1 in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th Edition for paper format. Students are required to purchase this manual and to become familiar with its content. Any source used by a student must be documented through normal scholarly references and citations, and the extent to which any sources have been used must be apparent to the reader. The University further considers resubmission of a work produced for one course in a subsequent course or the submission of work done partially or entirely by another to be academic dishonesty. It is the student's responsibility to seek clarification from the course instructor about how much help may be received in completing an assignment or exam or project and what sources may be used. Students found guilty of academic dishonesty or plagiarism shall be subject to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from the University. Professional Courtesy During the class period, please place all cell phones or pagers on vibrate, or, silent modes. This will prevent disruption of class time. Please try to avoid side conversations unless relevant to the lecture and openly discussed with the entire class. 4. Dress Code Policy From the Student Handbook (p. 19): South University seeks to properly prepare students for the general business and professional community. Students in allied health majors have specific dress requirements which are defined by their departments. If a student is improperly dressed, he/she will not be permitted to attend class or use University facilities. Inappropriately revealing and/or improper dress includes but is not limited to: sagging and low-rise pants, lowcut necklines, and bare midriffs. Hats may not be worn on campus. X.
