USC Marshall School of Business Marshall Information Services Blackboard 9.1 Online Tests Blackboard's "Tests, Surveys, and Pools" component allows instructors to create tests that students can take online within Blackboard. Some of the options available are listed below. Test results can be recorded directly into the Grade Center. Some question types such as True/False and Multiple Choice are self-scoring and will enter points into the grade center automatically. Instructors can access student results and manually grade or change points from within the Grade Center. Tests can be timed. Tests can be made accessible only within a set time frame. Questions can be re-used on other tests. Tests can be exported to other sections. While there are different methods of creating tests, if you are new to tests we suggest you follow the steps outlined in the diagram below. It gives the flow of the steps an instructor will take to create, deploy, and grade Blackboard tests. 1 Create Question Pool and Questions 2 Create the Test 3 Place Questions from the Pool on the Test 4 Deploy the Test allowing students to take it 5 Students Take the Test (They can View the Results Immediately if Permitted) 6 Grade any Non- Self Scoring Questions such as Essay or File Upload 7 In My Grades, Students View their Scores if Permitted by the Instructor Table of Contents Step 1: Building the Question Pool... 2 Step 2: Creating the Test... 7 Step 3: Placing Questions on the Test... 8 Setting Points... 9 Step 4: Deploying the Test Step 5: Students Take the Test Step 6: Instructor Grades the Tests (Maybe) No Instructor Action Required Instructor Action Required Step 7: Students go to "My Grades" to View Test Feedback and their Score Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 1 of 23
Test Related Tasks / Issues The Student was Unable to Take the Test when the Link was Available Change the Correct Answer(s) to a Question Copying a Test in a Different Section Appendix: Hiding a Grade Center Column from Students Step 1: Building the Question Pool The most common method of creating a test is to create the question's first by adding them to a question pool and then assigning them to a test. (If you create them within a test and then delete the test, the questions are also deleted but if you assign them to a test from a pool, they will still be available for other tests should you delete a test they are deployed within.) 1. Access the course you wish to create a test for. 2. Expand "Control Panel". 3. Expand "Course Tools". 4. Click "Tests, Surveys, and Pools". 5. Click "Pools". 6. Click "Build Pool" to create a new question pool. Editing an Existing Pool Note that if you have already created a question pool it will appear here. If desired, you can "Edit" to add more questions to it rather than making a new pool. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 2 of 23
7. Type a name for the question pool. 8. Type a description of the pool. 9. Click "Submit". 10. Click "Create Question". 11. Click the type of question you would like to create. The options for each are different but the most common type (Multiple Answer) is shown on the next page. About Question Types and Automatic Scoring Some question types such as Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, and Fill in the Blank* are automatically scored by Blackboard. However, other types such as Essay, Short Answer*, and File Response, must be graded by the instructor. When this occurs, an exclamation point appears in the Grade Center in lieu of a score and the instructor must open the student's attempt and manually grade those types of questions before the student's test total will appear in the Grade Center. * Difference Between Fill in the Blank and Short Answer Questions Fill in the Blank questions are graded by Blackboard and requires that the student type in the answer exactly as specified by the instructor. Misspellings and case mismatches will result in the answer being marked as incorrect. Short Answer questions also require students to type in the correct answer but these questions types are graded manually by the instructor. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 3 of 23
Example: Multiple Answer Question - The options between the different questions types vary but do have many settings in common. The options for a multiple answer question (i.e. "check all that apply") are shown below. 12. Type a title for the question. 13. Type the question. 14. Set any desired question options. If using Multiple Answer questions, you may wish to utilize "Allow Partial Credit" for correct responses. Checking this also provides an option of negative points for wrong answers. 16. Type the choices students can pick from. 15. Specify the number of possible answer choices. (The minimum to select is 4 but you can click the "Remove" buttons below if you want less than 4 choices.) 17. Check the boxes next to answers that are correct. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 4 of 23
18. (Optional) Specify any desired feedback for correct answers. 19. (Optional) Specify any desired feedback for incorrect answers. 20. (Optional) classifying questions allows you to search for questions falling into a category. This makes reusing questions easier. 21. (Optional) Type any notes desired. 22. Select one of the following: Submit and Create Another Create another question of the same question type. Submit Return to the pool to create a different question type or exit the pool. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 5 of 23
The image below shows a question pool and its questions after the user would have clicked "Submit" on the previous page. Edit / Delete a Question To edit or delete a question, hover your mouse over it to make the drop down arrow appear then click the drop down arrow and select either "Edit" or "Delete". Assigning Question Points You can assign points to questions now or from within a test. (If you assign points now, you can still change them later within a test.) To assign points now: A. Check the box to the left of the question(s) you are assigning points to. B. Type the point value in the Points box. C. Click "Update". 23. Click "OK". Editing a Question Pool Should you need to go back into a pool and edit / delete, or add more questions: Return to the Pools area, hover your mouse over the name of the pool and click the drop down arrow that appear. Select "Edit". Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 6 of 23
Step 2: Creating the Test The steps in this section cover how to create the test and the next section covers how to assign questions to it. 1. Access the course you wish to create a test for. 2. Expand "Control Panel". 3. Expand "Course Tools". 4. Click "Tests, Surveys, and Pools". 5. Click "Tests". 6. Click "Build Test". Note that you can edit an existing test by clicking this button. 7. Type a name for the test. This will become the name of the link the students click on to launch the test. 8. Type a description of the test. It will appear below the name of the link for the students to read. 9. Type instructions for your students to read when they launch the test. 10. Click "Submit". Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 7 of 23
Step 3: Placing Questions on the Test At this point, you have created the pool of questions and have created the test. In this section, you will place the desired questions from the pool on the test. You should still be in edit test mode but if not, go to: "Control Panel Course Tools Tests Surveys and Pools" then click "Tests". Hover your mouse over the name of the test, click the drop down arrow that appears, and click "Edit". 1. Click "Reuse Question". 2. Click "Find Questions". 3. Click the pool containing the questions you wish to use. 4. Check the questions you wish to place in the test. 5. Specify "Move" or "Link". Copy A duplicate of the question is placed in the test. Editing the original has no effect on copy and vice versa. Link: Before Deployment: Edits to the original or the linked question affect all non-deployed linked instances of the question. Deleting the original deletes it from the test but deleting the one in the test does not affect the original. Point changes affect only the test question. Link: After Deployment: Once the test is deployed, edits to the question in the test do not affect the original question. Editing the original and answers does affect the test and Grade Center points. 6. Click "Submit". Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 8 of 23
Setting Points With tests, the number of points each question is worth determines the total number of points the test is worth. Further, questions can vary in their points value. Most instructors take one of two approaches: All Questions Worth Same Number of Points - You can quickly set all questions to be worth the same number of points that add up to the total you desire by dividing what you want the quiz to be worth by the number of questions you have. For example, you want the quiz to be worth 20 points and you have 5 questions, make each question worth 4 points. Questions Differ in Points You can also have different questions be worth different amounts. You will just need to do it in such a way that they add to the total value you want the test to be worth. 7. All Questions worth Same Number of Points: a. Click "All". b. Type the number of points. c. Click "Update". OR 7. Questions Differ in Points a. Click a question's "Points" box. b. Type the number of points. c. Click "Submit". d. Repeat a-c with remaining questions. Reorder Questions Move questions by dragging this symbol up or down. Edit / Remove Questions Click this button to edit or delete a question. Extra Credit When checked, the question's points possible are not included in the total points possible. 8. Click "Submit". Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 9 of 23
Step 4: Deploying the Test Once your tests is created and contains questions, you need to deploy it. This allows students to take it. 1. Within the course that contains the test, from the left menu access the content area where you wish to make the test appear for the students. For example "Content" or "Assignments". 2. From the horizontal menu, click "Assessments" then "Test". 3. Click the test you wish to deploy from "Add an Existing Test". 4. Click "Submit". Test Options You should now be in Test Options but if you get out, you can return to it by clicking the test's drop down arrow and selecting "Edit the Test Options". Name The name of the quiz should already be filled out but you can change it here if desired. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 10 of 23
5. Check if you want students to be able to view your description of the test before they begin the test. 6. Check if you want students to be able to view your instructions of the test before they begin the test. 7. Checking "Yes" makes the test available for students to begin taking assuming you are not using "Display After". (Even if you are delaying when students can take the test with "Display Until", this must still be set to "Yes".) 8. Checking "Yes" creates an announcement stating when the test will become available. Multiple Attempts (Optional) If utilized, a student can take a test multiple times. The most recent attempt is recorded in the grade center. 9. Set Timer (Optional) Use these options to have a timed test. Once they begin the test, they will have the time specified to complete it. 10. Display After / Display Until (Optional) The test link is only available for students to click during the time specified. (You must still set "Make Link Available" to "Yes" when using this option.) Note that it does not control how long students have to take the test once they click the linked. In this example, if they click the link at 8:55 pm, they would still have 60 minutes to take the test because the Timer is set to 60 minutes. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 11 of 23
Password (Optional) If the instructor creates a password, students can't take the test without the instructor giving them the password. Test Availability Exceptions (Optional) You might use this if a student missed a test or needs more time due to a disability. You can specify different Timer amounts, Test Availability, and Number of Attempts on a student-by-student or group basis. Due Date (Optional) Can be used to mark tests late or prevent students from taking the test after the Due Date. "Test Availability Exceptions" cannot override this. If you are using "Display Until" options, then this isn't really necessary. 11. Self-assessment Options If this is a graded test, then check the top box. If it is not a graded test, do not check it. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 12 of 23
12. Show Test Results and Feedback to Students You can use a maximum of two rules to control when and how much feedback students see after taking their test. In the example below, after a student completes the test they will see their score but nothing else (top rule). Then, once all attempts are graded, students see their own score, all possible answers, their correct answers, the answers they submitted, any auto-generated instructor feedback, and questions the student answered incorrectly (bottom rule). If two rules conflict (e.g. used the same "when") then the rule with the most permissive settings is applied. "When" choices are shown to the right Warning! The option 6. settings tend not to work! To ensure that your students cannot view results until you are ready do not use them and hide the test column from students in the Grade Center. See the appendix for the steps. 13. Specify whether all questions should be presented on one screen or one at a time. 14. Specify if questions should appear in a different order for each test attempt. 15. Click "Submit". Test Location / Edit Test Options A link to the test will appear within the content area you deployed the test. To return to the options shown in this section: a. Hover your mouse over the test and click the down arrow that appears. b. Click "Edit the Test Options". Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 13 of 23
Step 5: Students Take the Test After completing the steps in the previous section, students can click the link to the test to take it assuming: You set "Make Link Available" to "Yes". If you used "Display Until / Display After", the link will only be available to students during the date and time you specified. If you made any "Test Availability Exceptions", they will also affect the test's link visibility to students. Your students will take the steps below: 1. Login to Blackboard and access the course containing the test. 2. From the left menu, click the content area where the test was deployed. 3. Click the link to the test. The test instructions appear here unless the instructor hide them from the students. 4. Clicking "Begin" starts the test. 5. Students will respond to questions. If questions are displayed one at a time, they will use this button to advance. At the last questions they click "Save and Submit". When complete, students may get feedback (if enabled) and their scores are recorded in the Grade Center (unless the instructor elected to hide them under the Self-Assessment options). Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 14 of 23
Step 6: Instructor Grades the Tests (Maybe) No Instructor Action Required Many questions types such as multiple choice, multiple answer, true/false, etc., are self-grading and require no instructor action to get the total score into the Grade Center. If all of the questions on your test is made up of these question types then Blackboard will assign the appropriate points to each correct question and display the student's test total in the Grade Center. Instructors can view the totals by going to: Control Panel Grade Center Tests (See the image directly below for a view of a test column in the Grade Center.) Instructor Action Required Some question types such as Essay and File Upload cannot self-grade. If a test contains one of these types of questions, the instructor must go into the Grade Center, examine the student's responses and award points. Once the instructor awards points to a student's test, Blackboard will automatically calculate the total and record it in the test's column in the Grade Center as shown in the image below. This section covers how to manually award points or edit the number of points awarded. 1. Access the course containing the test you wish to grade. 2. Click "Control Panel Grade Center Tests". Already graded; either automatically or by the instructor. Instructor Attention Required Noting submitted. 3. Hover your mouse on the name of the column and click the drop down arrow that appears. 4. Click "Grade Attempts". 5. Provide scores for questions that require your attention. See the examples below for how to score a question or edit an autoscored question. Use this to advance to the next student's set of questions. Indicates partial credit. In this example, the student got 1 out of 4 possible answers correct so Blackboard gave them partial credit of (4pts possible / 3 questions = 1.33 points per correct response.) The instructor can override Blackboard's autoscoring by typing a new score here. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 15 of 23
Attention Needed A dash indicates that the instructor must type a score manually for this type of question. Indicates instructor action required. Indicates student answered incorrectly. Incorrect Answer A zero indicates that the student answered incorrectly and Blackboard gave them zero points. Scored by Blackboard A number (including zero) indicates that the question was scored automatically by Blackboard. Indicates a correct response. 6. Type any desired feedback to the student here. 7. Click "Save and Next" to save and grade the next student. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 16 of 23
Step 7: Students go to "My Grades" to View Test Feedback and their Score Assuming the test options specified by the instructor allow it, students can check their test scores as shown below. 1. Students will open the course that contains the test. 2. From the menu, click "Tools" then "My Grades". Below is an example of one student's view. What your student's see depend upon the feedback setting you made within Edit Test Options. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 17 of 23
Test Related Tasks / Issues This section addresses some of the more common tasks and issues that the instructor may need to address when working with Blackboard tests. The Student was Unable to Take the Test when the Link was Available This issue occurs when the instructor utilizes test options that only permit the student to take the test by a specific date or within a specific window of time. Should you have a student who missed the window, there are several approaches you can take: Give the student a zero on the test. Create a new test with different questions for the student. Make the test available for the student using exemptions. (Covered here). 1. Access the course containing the test. 2. Access the content area you deployed the test within. 3. Hover your mouse over the test and click the down arrow that appears. 4. Click "Edit the Test Options". 5. Scroll down to "Test Availability Exceptions" and click "Add User or Group". 6. If desired, you can narrow down the list using search ("Any" and "Not Blank" return all.) 7. Check the students who will be taking the test. 8. Click "Submit". Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 18 of 23
9. Specify the number of attempts, timer, and when the test is available to the student. 10. Make sure "Do not allow students to start the Test if the due date has passed" is NOT checked. Exemptions cannot override this setting. (Also, "Make Test Available" must be set to "yes".) 11. Click "Submit". Important: If the student you are making the exception for has already attempted the test, they will need to make the second attempt in a different browser or clear their cookies for the exception to work. Change the Correct Answer(s) to a Question Occasionally, an instructor will make an error on a test and need to give students credit for an answer that was initially considered incorrect (or vice versa). For essay and file upload questions you will need to do this on a student-by-student basis from within the Grade Center (see the section "Step 6"). However, for auto-grading questions, if you edit the questions to have what the correct responses should be, Blackboard will automatically rescore all students. 1. Access the course containing the test. 2. Access the area the test was deployed. * 3. Hover your mouse over the name of the test to make its options arrow appear. 4. Click the arrow and select "Edit the Test". * Note on Linked Questions If you linked rather than copied questions into your test, editing the correct responses within the pool rather than the method shown in this section will update any tests linking to those questions. This in turn will automatically update student test scores in the Grade Center. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 19 of 23
5. Hover your mouse over the question and click the down arrow that appear. 6. Click "Edit". 7. Make your changes as require by the question type used. For this question type, checking or unchecking answers marks them as correct or incorrect. 8. Click "Update Partial Credit %" (if employed). 9. Click "Submit and Update Attempts". 10. Click "OK" at the warning and "OK" again to close the question. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 20 of 23
Copying a Test in a Different Section If you teach multiple sections of a course, you will probably want to deploy the test to the other sections as well. Follow the steps below to copy a test from one course to another. 1. Access the course you will copying the test from. 2. Click "Control Panel Course Tools Tests Surveys and Pools". 3. Click "Tests". 4. Hover over the test you wish to import and click the drop down arrow that appears. 5. Click "Export to Local Computer". The file should automatically export as a.zip file to the "Downloads" folder of your computer. 6. Access the course you wish to import the test into. 7. Click "Control Panel Course Tools Tests Surveys and Pools". 8. Click "Tests". 9. Click "Import Test". 10. Click "Browse My Computer". 11. Locate the zip file Blackboard created in step 5 and click "Open". 12. Click "Submit". Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 21 of 23
13. Click "OK" to close the screen. 14. This adds the test to the course but does not deploy it. To deploy the test you have imported, see "Step 4: Deploying the Test" in this guide. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 22 of 23
Appendix: Hiding a Grade Center Column from Students When setting Test Options, there is a section (shown below) that allows you to create rules that concern when students can view the results of their test. For example, immediately after they take it, after everyone takes it, etc. Unfortunately, these rules tend not to work and using them often result in students being able to see how they did immediately after they have taken the test. If you wish to prevent this, follow the steps below. It will prevent students from seeing their scores until you are ready. 1. When setting up the test, do not create any results and feedback rules. 2. After creating and deploying the test, open the Grade Center (Control Panel Grade Center Full Grade Center). 3. Click the column's drop down arrow and select "Show/Hide to Users". The "hide" symbol should appear next to the column name indicating that it is a hidden column. Note that "Hide Column" does not prevent students from seeing their scores, it just hides it from the instructor in the Grade Center. Unhide a Column When you are ready for student to see their scores, repeat steps 2 and 3 to unhide the column. Marshall School of Business Tests_BB91.docx 5/8/14 Page 23 of 23
