The course enables students from a diverse range of educational and cultural backgrounds to work together within a supportive studio environment. The course provides you with an opportunity to engage critically with the contemporary design context, and to address current debates around interior design practice. It will enable you to develop a portfolio of interior design work that will allow you to apply for higher degree studies at Masters level and/or to enhance your current employment and career prospects. This is a studio-based course, with a curriculum based around design projects. The teaching is largely delivered through group tutorials and seminars led by leading practitioners within the discipline. This is supplemented by shared lectures across the Programme that help you to develop a contextual and cultural understanding of the subject of interior design. Drawing, in all its various forms, is an important focus, providing you with an ability to depict and communicate spatial design proposals and produce well-designed portfolios of design work. Through negotiated self-directed learning strategies, the course promotes conceptual and practical skills required of a design professional. It aims to broaden your ambition and provide you with independent problem-solving and transferable skills appropriate to the interior design context. The course focuses on the design of a variety of interiors, and explores new opportunities for creative interventions within existing and proposed architectural spaces. Presentation methods that are taught, including book-style project portfolios, help you to communicate your proposals to a wider audience. A key part of the course, and fundamental to the interior design profession, is the presentation of your design proposals, and the course has a major focus on these skills, including both analogue and digital methods. 2 You will be expected to engage how users interact with such architectural spaces. Your designs will be developed to a detail design scale, and will require you to consider material choices and construction techniques. You will be expected to reflect upon your design methodology and write about it in the required journals, as well as developing verbal presentation skills. You will learn about professional communication within the practice of interior design, and specifically the writing requirements of the interior designer. The course will help you to develop your career aspirations within a diverse profession that has increasingly demanding transferable skills. You will develop a design portfolio that will enable you to pursue future studies and further employment, and have the opportunity to exhibit your work in the final degree show at the College. Course Aims This course aims to: To synthesise design and conceptual skills that will equip you with the confidence to start out within the interior design profession. To encourage an aptitude for independent learning and an ability to work in teams. To develop the creative, critical, analytic, evaluative and professional skills required of the interior design professional. To provide an educational experience that opens up ambitions and encourages continued development in the subject at MA level and beyond. Course Outcomes The outcomes that you will have demonstrated upon completion of the course, are: Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary professional interior design practice and how design projects are developed through the arrangement of space, selection of material, detail design and construction techniques. Apply appropriate interior design methods to realise your ideas, including the competent use of technical drawing skills and the design of 3D/spatial proposals. Manage your own learning and continuing development, through independent planning and organisation, critical reflection and self-evaluation. Use interior design communication skills effectively in order to articulate design ideas and present them in a visually stimulating portfolio. Carry out sustained critical and practical research, using relevant resources and appropriate methods of analysis, enquiry and experimentation. Page 2 of 6

3 Demonstrate personal responsibility and decision making in order to respond to complex scenarios in a professional context or further study. Learning and Teaching Methods The learning and teaching methods for this course may include: Group critique; Group workshops and demonstrations; Lectures and seminars; Site and Gallery visits; Studio teaching by practitioners; Studio-based individual and group tutorials; Visiting specialists. Scheduled Learning and Teaching Scheduled learning and teaching is the percentage of your time spent in timetabled learning and teaching. In each Level (Year) you are expected to study for 1200 hours over 30 weeks; below is the amount of time which is timetabled activity. The rest of your learning time will be self-directed, independent study. 4 The UK Quality Assurance Agency s relevant HE framework, subject benchmarks, and academic infrastructure ( Programme Summary Programme structures, features, units, credit and award requirements: This course is credit rated, in keeping with all other courses at the University of the Arts. The year of study is rated at 120 credit points and you are required to achieve this to receive a Graduate Diploma award. Key curriculum areas and their associated credit rating are as follows: Two practice units (80 credits in total). Professional context unit (40 credits). Distinctive features of the course: The Graduate Diploma offers a one-year conversion programme for graduate students with a background in a related subject at Higher Education level 3. It provides students with the opportunity to engage critically within the contemporary design context and to create a strong portfolio of interior design work that will enable them to apply for higher degree studies at Masters level or to enhance their current employment and career prospects. This is a studio-based course, based around design projects. We work with existing buildings. We look at how they can receive new programmes of habitation and how they can offer both pleasure and commodity for the user. The unique feature of this course is the focus we provide for designing small-scale independent installations. These installations offer an opportunity for intimacy with our design objects and help us to clarify and understand the resonance that they might offer the user. The curriculum focuses on the relationships, the attitudes and the material technologies that are fundamental to the interior design professional and students will be expected to reflect on these issues by writing about them in a series of journals and making them the subject of verbal presentations. Design activity will include the selection of materials, detail design, construction techniques and the provision of environmental services. The course will enable you to: Understand the design and conceptual skills that will equip you with the confidence to begin practice as a professional designer. 5 Engage with the critical, analytic, evaluative and professional skills required of a design practitioner. Gain an educational experience that opens up ambitions and encourages continued development in the subject at MA level. Additional Course Costs Please note that additional costs may be incurred on this course, for such things as printing and photocopying, some materials, optional trips within the UK and overseas and final degree shows. Recruitment and Admissions Selection Criteria 1 Provide evidence of visual and conceptual creative abilities. 2 A clear commitment to the chosen field of study. 3 The potential to develop the full range of practical, expressive, critical and conceptual skills necessary to complete the course, and ability to benefit from the learning environment and experience. 4 An awareness of the contemporary/historical context. 5 Some understanding of the formative role that contemporary critical thought and historical study can play in the development of personal creative work. 6 The ability to communicate and discuss issues and ideas (in English) both verbally and in written form. 7 The ability to manage your own time and initiate projects. Portfolio advice: Please include a portfolio of creative design work (please note: this does not need to be specifically Interior Design focused). Entry Requirements BA (Hons) degree or equivalent academic qualifications. Evidence of ability in art or design. Some experience of architectural drawing is required. 6 Please note that this course is not an introduction to interior design. It is equivalent to the third year of a degree course, and prepares students for professional employment or further studies at MA level. Before joining this course, applicants must have some experience or complete courses in architectural drawing and model making. Applicants must also prove that they ve undertaken preliminary research into how interior designers operate and what processes they use to develop a design proposal. We expect our students to be self-motivated, have good study skills and exhibit an enthusiasm for exploration as well as research. If English is not your first language All classes are taught in English. If English is not your first language you must provide evidence at enrolment of the following: IELTS level 6.0 or above, with at least 5.5 in reading, writing, listening and speaking (please check our English Language requirements).
