He Won t Back Down Bible Story: He Won t Back Down (Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin) Acts 4:1-22 (Supporting: Acts 3) Bottom Line: When Jesus is with you, you can face anything. Memory Verse: Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6, NIV Life App: Confidence Living like you believe what God says is true Basic Truth: I can trust God no matter what. Before kids arrive, take a few moments to pray for them. Thank God that His presence alone can help you face anything life throws at you. Pray that kids would begin to understand that truth today. Pray especially for the kids who need God-sized confidence to face a hard challenge or tough situation. Arrival Activities (Playground & Popsicles weather permitting) If there is rain, we ll have board games set up on the different carpets for kids to play. We ll start Small Group Connect fifteen minutes after the service starts. Small Group Connect (5 minutes) This is a brief time for you to welcome and connect with the children in your group and to introduce visitors to the rest of the group. Feel free to ask a fun question or share something interesting about yourself. Below are some Ice-Breaker questions to get conversation going. This time helps our children know you are glad they came and that you want to get to know them better. During this time, write down the number of children on the yellow Head Count sheet. Icebreaker Questions: o If you could have any super power, what would it be? o Why would you choose that super power? o Who is your favorite super hero and what are their powers? 1
Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (Small Groups, 25 minutes) Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions. Pink Carpet -- Stump the Crowd [Talk about God Bible Story Review] Made to Imagine: an activity that promotes empathy and facilitates biblical application through role-play and reenactment What You Need: Stump the Crowd Activity Pages, Bibles, pencils Split your group into two teams and let them create team names, if they choose. Ask teams to sit apart from each other, so they can t hear each other. Provide each team with a Bible, a pencil, and one page of the Stump the Crowd Activity Pages. (Make sure you give each team a different page.) Instruct them to look over the questions on the paper and begin creating their own questions to fill in numbers 4-8. Kids can look up Acts 4 to help generate ideas about possible questions. Explain that they will be asking their questions to other team, so the questions can be tough but shouldn t be super obscure or impossible to answer without looking in the Bible. When kids have finished writing their questions, guide them to take turns asking a question to the other team. During each turn, teams will choose someone to read their question to the opposite team. If the opposite team gets the question correct, they get to keep all of their team members. If they get the question incorrect, one person must move to the other team. (You may need to facilitate the choosing of the person who switches teams, so feelings don t get hurt. Use your best judgment based on what you know about your few!) The team with the most people at the end wins! You all were coming up with some difficult review questions! Way to stump the other team. There were some times that Peter and John faced when they could have felt pretty stumped too. What would you have said to the religious leaders if they were questioning what you believed in? Would you have been nervous? (This may be a difficult question for kids to answer. Provide them with enough time to think and respond.) Peter and John chose to trust what they knew to be true. They knew that [Bottom Line] when Jesus is with you, you can face anything. We know that whoever we face or whatever we face, we can trust that we have what we need in Him! 2
Orange Carpet -- Break Through [Live for God Application Activity] Made to Create: an activity that explores spiritual ideas through the process of drawing, building, and designing What You Need: Butcher paper pieces, markers Divide your group into teams of three. Ask each kid to think of a really tough scenario. Provide examples such as facing a bully at school, passing the swim test to go into the deep end, feeling left out, etc. Ask teams to illustrate their scenarios on their piece of butcher paper together. They can choose one person s idea to illustrate all together or they can each illustrate their own idea on a section of the paper. After teams have completed their drawings, allow them to briefly present their scenarios to the entire group. After everyone has had a turn, instruct each team to choose two people to hold the ends of their butcher paper and someone to run and break through the paper. Encourage teams to switch roles so that everyone has a turn to break through the paper. (They can pick up the larger piece of butcher paper and use that to break through.) I agree with all of our teams that those were some difficult scenarios to break through. How do you normally face a difficult situation? (Allow time for kids to share their ideas.) [Make It Personal] (Share a personal story about a difficult situation and how Jesus helped you break through.) There will always be situations that pop up in our lives that are difficult to walk through. But the awesome thing is that we can lean on each other in those times to help! Let s always remind ourselves and our friends that [Bottom Line] when Jesus is with you, you can face anything. 3
Purple Carpet -- Always with Me [Live for God Application Activity] Made to Play: an activity that encourages learning through following guidelines and working as a group What You Need: Always with Me Activity Pages, music, a large die Show kids where you have placed the Activity Page pictures on the wall or floor. Tell them to dance around the room as you play music. At random times, stop the music and direct the kids to quickly run to a picture and stand by it. Roll the die. Tell the kids standing under the picture that has a die with the same number to shout: [Bottom Line] When Jesus is with you, you can face anything. Remove this picture and continue the game. (Note: If you roll a number that has already been eliminated, roll again.) Each time you remove a picture, invite the kids standing near it to take a closer look at it. Ask them to share reasons why the situation in the picture might be hard for someone. Remind them that no matter what we go through, Jesus will help us. Ask those who have had an experience like the one in the picture to tell how God helped them in that situation. With each new round, have the kids move around the room in different ways such as on tiptoe, leapfrog, hop on one foot, walk backward, and so forth. You don t have to fear anything that happens in your life. God can give you the confidence to trust Him no matter what. [Bottom Line] When Jesus is with you, you can face anything. 4
Blue Carpet -- Complete with Feathers [Hear from God Memory Verse Activity] Made to Move: an activity that increases the oxygen in the brain and taps into the energy in the body What You Need: Bible, paper plates, feathers, bowls, painter s tape Read Philippians 1:6 to the group and help them say the verse together. Review the memory verse motions with your group. Remind kids that God has a great plan for each of them. If they follow Him, He will keep working out His plan until it is complete. Go from child to child, looking at each one and saying, God will complete His plan for [child s name]. Form two equal teams and ask them to stand in a line. Create a starting line using painter s tape on the floor and place a bowl at the finish line (whatever distance works best for your space) across from each team. Give each team an equal number of feathers. Make sure there s one per child. Tell kids that you have a job you d like them to complete. o The job is to take turns carrying a feather on a paper plate to the other side of the room. o If the feather falls off, they must stop and pick it up before moving forward. o The job is complete when all of the feathers from one bowl have been carried to the bowl at the other end of the room. o When they place their feather in the bowl they should shout out, God will complete His plan for me, then run back and hand the plate to the next person in line. o That person places a feather on the plate and then starts walking. If time allows, play again but this time have the kids carry two feathers on their plate instead of one. It s hard to run with a feather on your plate, but you kept going until all the feathers were in the bowl. Great job! You completed the work I gave you to do. Did you know that God has work He is doing, too? He s not carrying feathers. He s doing something way better. He s working in YOU! He sees everything that happens to you and He uses it to help you trust Him more and more. One important thing He wants you to remember as He works out His plan is that [Bottom Line] when Jesus is with you, you can face anything. 5
End of Service (Small Groups, 15 minutes) At the last 3-4 minutes of the service, students will be prompted to return to their small group carpet for pickup. Spend the last couple minutes doing the Prayer activity below and visiting with the kids in your group: Pray and Dismiss [Pray to God Prayer Activity] Made to Move: an activity that increases the oxygen in the brain and taps into the energy in the body Ask if anyone has anything big they are facing this week. Allow some time for kids to share and ask each kid who shares if the thing they re facing makes them excited, nervous, or neither. God! We thank You for the awesome friends we have here who remind us how we can trust in You. I know many of us are facing different things in this upcoming week some exciting, some that make us nervous. Help us to remember each other this week and to be praying for the situations we are facing ahead. Remind us of Your promise that [Bottom Line] when Jesus is with you, you can face anything. In Jesus name, amen! Parent Connect: Share with parents that we ve been talking about [Bottom Line] when Jesus is with you, you can face anything. *** Give each child a GodTime page and remind parents that this is a great way for them to help their child learn how to spend time with God. 6
