2 ACADEMIC INTEGRITY STATEMENT As an institute of higher learning, we recognize that academic dishonesty detracts from the value of a BSU degree; therefore, we shall not tolerate lying, cheating, plagiarizing, or stealing in any form. Violations of this policy will result in a failing grade. Please reference the BSU Student Code of Conduct for a complete description of the University Academic Dishonesty policy. PROFESSIONALISM I expect each student to adhere to highest professional standards. Any conduct unbecoming of professional conduct is likely to be penalized. These include but are not limited to (i) consistent talking in the class except to participate in class discussions (ii) causing disturbance to regular class activities (iii) leaving in the middle of the class without prior permission (iv) using a laptop computer to do non-class related work during the class (v) reading of newspapers/facebook in the class (vi) not switching cell phones off and (vii) coming into class on time. SOCIAL MEDIA (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.) ACTIVITIES DURING THE MIDDLE OF A LECTURE OR CLASS ACTIVITY IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. ATTENDENCE POLICY Attendance in all class periods is essential; attendance the first week of class is mandatory. The majority of course material will be delivered through class lectures, exercises, handouts, and assignments. Attendance will not be taken during each class; however brief quizzes will be given during most class periods. Any student missing four consecutive quizzes for any reason, without contacting Professor Castel before the fourth missed quiz, will not be permitted to sit for the next exam, resulting in a grade of zero for the exam. Students are expected to arrive to class on-time and remain in class until dismissed. If the instructor is more than 15 minutes late, you may assume that class is cancelled for that day only. If BSU is closed due to reasons such as poor weather, assignments (including exams) will be due the next scheduled class after re-opening of the school. GRADE DISTRIBUTION Exams 1, 2, & 3 (Lowest Dropped) 50% Two Minute Quizzes & Assigned Exercises 20% The Goal Quiz: 05% Final Exam 25% FINAL GRADE SCHEDULE Final grades will be assigned based on the following point scheme: Letter Grade Points Letter Grade Points A % A % A % B % B % B % C % C % C % D % D % F < 60.0%

3 OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Two-Minute Quizzes: During several lectures, students will be required to complete Two-Minute Quizzes that reinforce the key learning goals of the lecture. In-class quizzes missed due to an absence cannot be made up; however, your three lowest quiz grades will be dropped. Students missing eight or more quizzes during the semester due to unexcused absences will receive a grade of F for the course. Assigned Exercises: Problems from the textbook and provided by the professor will be recommended to reinforce the course learning objectives. These homework problems will generally not be collected or graded, however they may be discussed in class. Occasionally, take-home exercises will be assigned to help reinforce concepts in lieu of twominute quizzes. These assignments will be due one week from the day they are assigned. Homework extensions will only be made for required school functions and illness with proper documentation (e.g. doctors note). Exams: Three exams will be given during the semester (the lowest score will be dropped) and a comprehensive Final Exam will be given during the exam week. The exams are closed book / note. Exams will be strictly timed (typically 70 minutes) and may include all material covered in lectures, exercises, handouts, and discussions. Failure to turn the test in within the class period will result in a grade of zero. A calculator is recommended but cell phones are not acceptable substitutes. A brief review will be held prior to each exam; any material covered in any assignment or in any class, including the review sessions, may be included in the exams. Students missing an exam due to a documented required school function may make alternative exam arrangements as long as they discuss the absence with me and make arrangements at least one week prior to the exam date. Job interviews, weddings, etc. are not approved absences, so make sure to check the exam schedule before arranging other activities. Makeup exams due to an approved school function must be taken before the exam date or during the last week of classes. Any student absent on the day of an exam due to illness must me at matthewcastel@boisestate.edu on or before the day of the exam to inform me of the reason for the absence. Official documentation of the illness may be required. Makeup exams for exams missed due to illness will be given during the last week of classes. If you do not me on or before the day of the exam you will be given a grade of zero for the exam. If you have missed an exam and do not contact me at the end of the semester to arrange a makeup exam during the last week of classes, you will be given a grade of zero for the exam. The final exam must be taken during the official exam period listed on the University Calendar. An Academic Alert referral will be submitted for students that earn a failing grade on in-semester exam. Following a referral, an academic advisor in the student s college will reach out to the student via phone and with the goal of scheduling an in-person meeting and/or connecting the student to support resources. More information about this program can be found at:

4 Teams and Group Assignments: Teams may be utilized throughout the semester. Team assignments will be at the discretion of the professor. It is your team s responsibility to develop a system of communication, meetings, and delegation that allows your team to work together to successfully complete the group exercises. The team should also develop a plan on how to respond to illness amongst the team members. Extra Credit: While not guaranteed, extra credit opportunities may occur from time to time. These will be at the discretion of the professor. Communication: Due to the large volume of daily telephone calls and , phone calls to the professor cannot be returned. Use only matthewcastel@boisestate.edu in order to contact me by . In the event of an emergency, contact via text/mobile phone is permitted. Remember as future business professionals, your messages help shape people s impressions about you. Please use professional protocol, addressing me with something like Hello Dr Castel, and then use complete, grammatically correct sentences, and sign it with your full name (I may have multiple students with your first name in my classes). If I receive an unprofessional message, I may ask you to send a new message following the guidelines detailed above. Occasionally I will send or Blackboard messages to the class or to individual students; it is your responsibility to ensure that the address listed for you in the class roster is correct and to monitor that account and the course Blackboard site. Distractions: While participation is encouraged, discourtesy is not tolerated. Excessive arguments, disrespectful, offensive language, or behavior leading to the disruption of learning will result in the expulsion of the student from class and possible disciplinary action of the student judiciary. PLEASE turn off all devices that create noise. Students using cell phones, laptops, etc. for activities unrelated to the class activities ( , text messaging, etc.) will be asked to leave the classroom, given a zero for any missed quizzes, and not permitted to use a calculator on the next exam. Additionally, any class-wide curves or bonuses are contingent on the entire class adhering to this policy. Students with Disabilities: Any student who feels s/he may need accommodations based on the impact of a disability should contact me privately to discuss your specific needs. You will also need to contact the Educational Access Center at located in the Administration Building, Room 114 to meet with a specialist and coordinate reasonable accommodations for any documented disability. For more information on BSU Educational Access Center (EAC) see the web site at Students should discuss any specific accommodations they foresee needing with the professor during the first two weeks of classes. Additionally, it is the responsibility of the student to give the professor one-week notice prior to each instance where an accommodation will be needed.
