How to Use This Application: Quick Tips for Getting Started 3 How to Use This Application Language Fundamentals interactive application is your comprehensive resource for grade-level grammar, mechanics, usage and vocabulary practice. The broad scope of language skills and range in difficulty of the interactive activities enable you to precisely target those skills that each student needs to practice. Each lesson follows the same format, making it easy for both students and teachers to use. Teachers can use an electronic whiteboard or projection system to lead interactive class lessons, or one or more students can complete the activities on their own at a computer. Quick Tips for Getting Started Log in to Evan-Moor Portals and click on the icon for Language Fundamentals. This will bring up the Available Units menu, where you can select a skill section to begin. Then choose the activity you would like students to complete from the Activities menu. Lesson History Title Resources Click on Quick launch next lesson to jump to the lesson that comes after the one you completed last. From the menu for the available activities, select a section from the left column, then click on the green checkmark in the right column to launch the lesson.
How to Use This Application: Conducting a Lesson 4 Conducting a Lesson Each lesson follows the same format, beginning with an instructional rule. Once continuing, the instructional rule persists along the top, along with examples to show students how the rule is applied and writing. To help students focus on the activity, click the blue arrow to hide the example. Open the example to reinforce concepts or to provide a reference for students as they complete the lesson. The collapsible rule helps to decrease distraction so that students can focus on the individual activities. Enable Check Answer in situations where you are asking students to actively engage in entering answers. Disable if you are doing a review. Enable or disable the Check Answer feature.
How to Use This Application: Conducting a Lesson 5 Many of the activities in the Language Fundamentals interactive application utilize a selection box to complete activities. Color selection based on activity requirements. Drag and drop for sorting and matching. This selection box can be positioned either as a floating window, or docked on the right side of the application. This enables the options within the selection box to remain visible in those cases where scrolling is required to complete an activity. 1 Grab the gray bar at the 2 top of the selection box and pull to undock. Pull the floating box over to the right. A visual guide will appear, indicating a docking area.
6 The Language Fundamentals interactive application contains 160 lessons, scaffolded to accommodate students varied skill levels. Multiple-choice review lessons for each section provide assessment and standardized test preparation. Paragraph-editing pages provide real-world application of skills. Multiple-Choice Questions (Single and Multiple Answer) Students select the correct response(s) in order to practice grade-level language skills such as spelling, verb forms, inferring, identifying sentences, and more. Drag and Drop Editing: Punctuation Students proofread sentences and drag punctuation marks to the correct location.
USING THE LANGUAGE FUNDAMENTALS INTERACTIVE APPLICATION 7 Feature: Text vs. The Pencil Tool There are two methods for entering in answers that require a text entry response: Students can either type their answers into a text box, or write out there answers in a drawing box. A text-entry box appears by default. 1 2 The pencil tool activates the drawing area. This option, on Show Answer, displays the answer below to compare the student s entry with the actual answer. Written Responses Students respond to questions by writing or typing their answers within a text box. 1 Ask students to type their response into the text box, then click the Continue button. 2 To view an example of a correct response, click on the blue arrow.
8 Correcting Text Students read a series of words, a sentence, or a passage in order to identify mistakes and rewrite the selection correctly. 1 Ask students to type their response into the text box, then click the Check Answer button. 2 A red x will appear if they enter an incorrect answer. A green " will appear if they answer the question correctly. 3 To continue, click the Show Answer button to view the correct answer. If needed, review the skills covered in a group discussion. Crossword Puzzles and Word Searches Students can click on the clue to highlight the entry area in the puzzle. The clue is automatically crossed-off when the word is found.
9 Selecting Text Students build grammar skills by highlighting words using a selection box. 1 Choose an option in the selection box. For additional clarity, the options are labeled. 2 Make a selection according to the activity directions. In many cases, an example is given to demonstrate how to complete the activity. 3 Click the Check Answer button to evaluate. If needed, review the skills covered in a group discussion. Drawing Students are asked to draw a picture in order to show their understanding of a sentence or short passage. Ask students to place the curser inside the drawing space provided. Once the cursor is inside the drawing box, it will turn into a pencil, allowing them to draw freely. If you need to start over, click the Clear button ( ) to clear the drawing space. Toggle between a pencil and an eraser to make adjustements
10 Matching (Pictures and Text) Students practice language skills such as verb forms, vocabulary development, usage, and more while placing text or pictures in the correct spot. 1 Ask students to select words from the box then drag and drop the words into the correct spot. To continue, click the Check Answer button. 2 A red x will appear if students have answered the question incorrectly. A green will appear if they have answered the question correctly. 3 To continue, click the Show Answer button, and the correct answers will appear. If needed, review the skills covered in a group discussion.
11 1 Editing The final section in each grade level provdes sentence or paragraphs for students to practice editing skills in context. 2 Point out the editing skill focus for the lesson. Ask students to proofread the paragraph to find the errors. Select the first error. A text entry box will appear above the crossed-out word. Enter the corrected text. Hit the enter key on your keyboard, or use the Enter button to the right of the text box. 3 4 Words that have been edited will be highlighted in blue. You can click on these words to modify the entry at any point during the lesson. Once all of the corrections have been made, click on Check Answer. Correct edits are highlighted in green. Any incorrect edits or missed errors are highlighted in red.
