1 Arkansas State University-Newport Fundamental Concepts of Chemistry Course Syllabus CHEM 1043 Fundamental Concepts of Chemistry I Catalog description : A one semester chemistry survey course introducing selected fundamental concepts including dimensional analysis, mole concept, atomic and molecular structure, nomenclature, chemical reactions, thermochemistry, intermolecular interactions, gases, mixtures, kinetics, equilibrium and acid base chemistry. It is meant to prepare the student for CHEM 1052 Fundamental Concepts of Organic and Biochemistry. The structure of this course is set up to follow discussions with quizzes then exams over each chapter. The discussions will be topics of my choosing. Each new chapter will open when the previous chapter closes. You will not be able to work a LONG way ahead. Each student is URGED not to wait until the last minute to complete assignments.

3 GRADING CRITERIA AND SCALE: There will be nine major exams during the semester. Each exam will be worth 100 points. There will be 9 discussions for the semester worth 10 points each. There will be 9 quizzes during the semester worth 10 pts each. Only the 8 highest quizzes and 8 highest discussions will count. There will be a COMPREHENSIVE FINAL worth 100 points. Consequently, there will be a total of 1160 points available. Students earning at least 1045 points will earn an A, 930 points will earn a B, 810 points will earn a C, 690 points will earn a D. Additionally, each QUIZ and EXAM will have two attempts and only the higher score will count. All quizzes and exams will be graded immediately. Discussions may take me up to one week from the final due date to grade. The first assignment is to post an introductory post about you. (Only one post is necessary.) It should follow the rules outlined below for regular discussions. Discussions over topics will be completed in two parts. Part A will be the student s first post concerning the topic. Part B will be a reply to another post. Do NOT post to your own first posting. If you happen to be the only Part A poster, you will receive up to full credit (10 pts) for the post. If you do not post to part A, you may reply to another student s post for B to receive up to half credit (5 pts.) Posts should be about 5-7 sentences in length. I am not looking for a novel, just a well worded opinion. Make sure to utilize correct etiquette when posting. (See below for more information.) The grades for the discussion will be decided upon factors such as correct etiquette, relevance to topic, and length of post. Quizzes will have 10 questions worth one point each for a total of 10 points. Each quiz will have two attempts. Exams will have 25 questions and each question is worth 4 points. Exams have only ONE attempt. The Final is COMPREHENSIVE. It is worth 100 points with 100 questions. There are two attempts available for the final. All questions are multiple choice type questions. Clearly identify themselves and the class and section in which he/she is enrolled. 2. Make appropriate use of the subject line. 3. Use proper English, grammar, and spelling. 4. Retain a copy of the Avoid the use of emoticons 6. Do not use net abbreviations

It is summer and I will not be there to answer. Simply me. I will do my best to reply in 24 hours but may occasionally take 48. If the is sent over the weekend, it may be Monday before I respond. However since this is a summer term, I DO make every effort to check mail daily. INSTRUCTOR S LATE WORK POLICY- If a student misses a quiz, there will be no makeup. There is one dropped quizz to aid in these cases. If a student misses an exam, the final will count twice. In the extreme case of major illness or other problems which causes the student to miss multiple assignments, I will consider reopening assignments on a case by case basis.
