Every attempt will be made to provide students with adequate notice of any change. Required Readings Peng, M. (2014). Global Strategy (3 rd Edition). Mason OH: Cengage Learning Additionally, videos are utilized and posted on Blackboard. Course Description This is an advanced case course dealing with the wide range of management problems involving policy and strategy decisions faced by executives in both domestic and international markets. A capstone course that requires integration of all materials covered in the M.B.A. curriculum in the policy formulation process. Prerequisite: Permission of M.B.A. director. Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary theory and practice in the field of strategic management by: o Critically analyzing and evaluating organizational mission statements and major organizational goals. o Scanning and evaluating an organization s external competitive environment. o Scanning and evaluating an organization s external general environment. o Critically analyzing and evaluating an organization s internal operating environment. o Evaluating the strength of an organization s competitive advantage. o Analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of an organization s functional, competitive, and corporate strategies. 1

2 Explain the influence of globalization and international strategies on organizational strategic choices. Demonstrate competency in team building skills as well as interpersonal, oral and written communications by preparing and presenting professional-quality business case studies in both written and presentation formats. Demonstrate analytical thinking, critical analysis, problem solving, use of technology and use of current information resources in the research and preparation of professionalquality business case studies. Course Philosophy and Additional Skills Developed Research has established that providing opportunities for active learning usually improves the overall learning a student takes away from a course. Furthermore, the skills outlined below are critical to developing the desire for life-long learning required to succeed in your career of choice. With this in mind, the class assignments have been developed to engage students in discussion, small group work, and other activities to actively engage your participation. Therefore, the following ground rules are applied to the course: Cooperation and Mutual Respect - As leaders, we must learn to create an atmosphere of trust in our work teams. This means appreciating the unique set of experiences, beliefs and values each member brings to class. Another important element of cooperation, trust and respect is listening. Good leaders are notable for the ability to listen to others and ask meaningful questions. Respectful turn taking in both sharing and listening is expected. You will be required to participate in-group discussions online that may challenge your individual beliefs or values. Effective group participation will require that you accept your individual responsibilities for using good interpersonal communication skills in the electronic environment. Creativity - You will be challenged to create new thought. When we think through something for the first time, we are creating our logic, purposes and reasons for thinking. We are making new assumptions. We are forming new concepts. We are asking new questions. We are making new inferences. We are working out a problem in a direction that is new to us. Creativity is desirable and rewarded in this class. Problem solving - You will be required to not only identify problems but also to generate solutions and make recommendations based on a logical and thorough analysis of the alternatives. Analytical Thinking and Critical Analysis - You will be required to evaluate issues and information that may be competing in both assumptions and consequences. These assumptions and consequences will need to be evaluated in order for you to reach your own logically supported recommendations. Individual accountability - All members of the class will be held responsible for their own learning as well as the learning within their project teams. No member of any team should feel that he/she is doing more or less than an equal share of the project. Therefore, each team will be given the opportunity to sanction non-contributing team members through the following process: 2

3 Graded Components 12 Group Case Assignments (20 Points each) 240 points (60%) Individual participation in 3 discussions (10 points each) 30 points (8%) Final Group Case Analysis 100 points (25%) Ivey Exam 30 points (7%) Total Points 400 points (100%) Angelo State University employs a letter grade system. Grades in this course are determined on a percentage scale: A = % B = % C = % D = % F = 59.9 % and below Participation/Peer Evaluations This is an online course that requires group work. Your participation will be assessed through peer evaluations. The expectation is that every team member will do their share to the best of their ability on every assignment. A peer evaluation form will be posted on Blackboard. Case Assignments (20 Points Each) All case work will be presented as a team. There will be 12 group case assignments that will require answering 3 4 questions. All of these cases can be found in the back of your textbook. Each case is worth 20 points and requires answering the assigned questions and then submitting your work as a Narrated PowerPoint Presentation. This is a short YouTube that reviews how to add narration to PPTs: One PowerPoint slide should be used to highlight the key talking points as they pertain to the each question. Teams of three will have three questions to answer which means each team member will be responsible for answering one question. Teams of 4 will follow the same format but will have 4 questions to answer. Each team member is expected to be the narrator for one slide. Your analysis should be complete, supported by what you learned from the related chapter in your textbook. This assignment should be submitted on Blackboard in the folder created for group work. Final Group Case Presentations (100 Points) Using the material we covered in this class, your group will be asked to submit an analysis of an assigned strategic case. Your analysis should be based on key ideas covered in the textbook throughout the semester. This presentation is expected to be minutes long, use professional PowerPoint formatting, and professional speaking skills. Each team member must participate in this presentation. 3

4 Blackboard Discussion (10 points each) There will be three topic discussions posted on Blackboard. Below is the grading basis for session participation. Grade Value High Value (8-10 points) Medium (5-7 points) Low (0-4 points) Gradable Elements Student s answers were well researched and involved thoughtful and detailed analysis. Student clearly identified the issue being discussed. Student utilized definitions and analysis from textbook and incorporated and applied them properly. No grammatical or spelling errors. Student answered part, some or most of the question presented, but not all. Student did some research on the subject matter but not enough detail or properly identifying the issue. Student had some grammatical and spelling errors in their answer. Student engaged in cheering on other student(s), without adding any substance. Student only participated in the final minutes before the discussion was ended. Student did not identify the issue or only touched upon part of the correct answer. Student did little to no research and analysis. Student had many or too many grammatical and spelling errors. Ivy Exam (30 Points) A maximum of 30 points can be earned based on your IVY exam score. All MBA students are required to take the standardized Ivy test, which is scheduled through this class by the University. Your Ivy score will be normed and graded accordingly. Failure to complete the Ivy exam will result in an incomplete for the course and can prevent you from graduating! Submitting Assignments: All group assignments have to be submitted via Blackboard by midnight on Sunday, Central Standard Time (CST). Late Submission of Coursework: There will be no late work accepted. Coursework not submitted on time will receive a grade of zero. In rare circumstances, for example family emergencies, exceptions will be made. Please notify me as early as possible if you expect a conflict, and I will do everything I can to work with you. Response Time Assignments are due on Sunday by midnight and will be graded by Tuesday. s will typically be answered within 24 hours. 4

6 Student Absence for Religious Holidays As stated in the Angelo State University Operating Policy and Procedure (OP Student Absence for Observance of Religious Holy Day), a student who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known in writing to the instructor prior to the absence. A student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence. Course Drop To view information about how to drop this course or to calculate important dates relevant to dropping this course, you can visit Incomplete as a Course Grade As stated in the Angelo State University Operating Policy and Procedure (OP Grading Procedures), the grade I is given when the student is unable to complete the course because of illness or personal misfortune. An I that is not removed before the end of the next long semester automatically becomes an F. A graduate student will be allowed one year to remove a grade of I before it automatically becomes an F. To graduate from ASU, a student must complete all I s. Grade Appeal Process As stated in the Angelo State University Operating Policy and Procedure (OP Student Grade Grievances), a student who believes that he or she has not been held to appropriate academic standards as outlined in the class syllabus, equitable evaluation procedures, or appropriate grading, may appeal the final grade given in the course. The burden of proof is upon the student to demonstrate the appropriateness of the appeal. A student with a complaint about a grade is encouraged to first discuss the matter with the instructor.
