This class will enlighten and stimulate your perception, taste and aesthetic appreciation for the Arts. Unlike classes such as Art Appreciation or Art History this class seeks to challenge what you think you already know about art, in order for you to recognize the vital role art plays in the understanding of human values. You are encouraged to attend in person exhibits, art galleries, museums, movies, and performances. These visits to see and experience art are intended to bring you closer to, and give you greater insights into the various art forms as well as the messages revealed by the artists. Text(s): 1) The Humanities Through The Arts by F. David Martin and Lee A. Jacobus * buy only one of these: 7 th edition ISBN: or 8 th edition ISBN: This is the requires text for this class; you will need this book in order to understand the test questions because the test questions are created by the authors of this text. 2) Raising Sentry by August Flowers ISBN: We will discuss this book online while studying literature. (COA Bookstore will carry them, or buy it at Outskirts press.org online). This book is recommended; it can serve as a focus work when studying literature, and offers opportunities to earn points and to address questions to the author about the novel and the self publishing process. Note: Students will log into Peralta Moodle for lessons, exams, lectures, chat sessions and participation with class members and your Instructor. This class is a hybrid and even though most assignments are online there are in-classroom (required) meetings. These meeting will take place several times during the semester. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. 2 EXTRA CREDIT is not required, but is encouraged. Extra credit is available for written reviews of recent "first hand" experience with artworks. This means that you must experience it for yourself (first hand). It must be two full pages and typed in an essay format. No Internet papers will be accepted, no works already presented, no artwork appearing in the class text, no artwork from class lectures, and no artwork from in-class films. No points assigned for reviews on artists / artworks discussed in class. Review artworks recognized by the humanities; music concerts, art exhibits, visit museums and art galleries, see movies (in theatres only), participate with art genres listed in the main text then create a 2 page review; it must be typed on a word processor or a computer only. All extra credit reviews due by TBA Calendar Meetings: Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. in room C209 - These are required attendance. 1. January 22, 2014 Wednesday: This is the class orientation meeting and the first required meeting dates. This meeting will allow student to get an understanding of the course required assignments. March 19, 2014 Wednesday / Mid-Term Presentations with Outline - Chapter Lecture Discussion In class lecture and film - Write (2) questions, comments and/or observations for class discussions - turn in at end of class for participation points. 4. April 9, 2014 Wednesday / Final Oral Presentations The final oral research presentations - Write (2) questions, comments and/or observations for class discussions - turn in at end of class for participation points. 5. April 23, 2014 Wednesday / Final Oral Presentations The final oral research presentations - Write (2) questions, comments and/or observations for class discussions - turn in at end of class for participation points. 6. May 7, 2014 Wednesday / Final Oral Presentations -This is the end of the final oral research presentations and last class meeting. All remaining online assignments must be completed and sent by or posted online in Moodle by 5/14/2014. The Research Paper: The college level research paper should: Page 2 of 7
3 1. Have a cover page - a cover page, example is on Professor s website, 2. Typed - must be typed on a computer (no hand written corrections), 3. College level writing your paper must be structured in a format that demonstrates your knowledge of college level writing (seek help with writing from Tutors, the Writing Center or Learning Resources, 4. Artistic Terms - use the artistic terms (subject matter, content, artistic form) are essential to the grade score of this paper (as they apply to your art selection). 5. Bibliography - include a bibliography of 5 research sources (required citation MLA style, examples and tutorials are on the Professor s website), only 2 internet sources acceptable. The research term paper is a gathering of information on an artist and focus art work of that particular artist. Students will research the art work or the artist of their choice. However, students must not select an artist or art work covered during class lectures or from the text. Provide a copy of your chosen artwork with your research paper. Keep in mind that your (topic) artist or art work is your choice and you should know all there is to know about it or him/her. Do not say I don t know or I think give only facts and data of support. Personal views have no place in research. Your job for this assignment is to provide researched facts about your topic while including the artistic terms within the body of your research. 1. The term/ research paper must be typed and structured in a format that demonstrates your knowledge of college level writing. If writing is a problem, you should consider taking English 201 and/or English 1A. Assistance with writing assignments is offered thru the Writing Center and the Learning Resource Lab on the 2nd floor of the COA Library. 2. The (research) term paper requires that you use artistic terms that apply to the art or artist you have chosen in order to demonstrate your knowledge of them. It would be a great idea to provide a paragraph or two for each of your required terms; subject matter, artistic form, and content. This should demonstrate your knowledge of these terms as they apply to your selection. The terms are very important to your grade score. 3. Written assignments will lose points for; lack of the required artistic terms, editing, length, and plagiarizing. Please make sure all corrections to your written assignments are completed before turning them in for scoring. Required length is not less than 4 pages or more than 5 pages. 4. Five (5) Bibliography sources are required no more than two (2) internet sources. Due date: The week before the student s scheduled oral presentation. Speaking in Front of the Class: 1. Mid-Term Presentation: Much like a show and tell done in grade school, yet more challenging. You have up to 3 minutes to show and talk about a special art piece to you and or your family. * The mid-term presentation is a short talk about an artwork, with a one page outline. This will be presented to the class and there is a time limit of three (3) minutes to share your art work. This is an opportunity to share some personal art and its meaning to you. Your selection must be an art form recognized by the Humanities and listed in the main text book. There is an outline format which accompanies this mid-term presentation it is worth half the allowed Page 3 of 7
4 points, don t forget it. The assignment requires an outline using the artistic terms to define the artwork. This is not an essay but an outline format (see samples online). The outline format is important to your grade score, which is equal to half the points. Copies of the required outline format can be found at the Instructor s website. There are no makeup dates for any assignments. Due dates February26th and March 19th 2. Final Oral Presentation: You have already done the research paper now you are presenting your findings to the class and showing everyone the works and/or artist you ve studied on your own. It is important to your grade score that you demonstrate your knowledge of the artistic terms and use them to discuss your artwork. These terms are; subject matter, content, artistic form, and participation. Due dates for the oral research presentations are April 9, 2014 / April 23 rd and May 7, 2014 GRADING IS BASED ON THE POINTS SYSTEM: Grade Points: Research Term Paper up to 100 points up to 100 points Final Exam up to 100 points up to 100 points Mid-Term Outline. up to 80 points up to 80 points Online Participation up to 70 points up to 70 points 6 Exams up to 25 points each up to 150 points Raising Sentry Rev Review up to 50 points up to 50 points Syllabus Exam up to 25 points up to 25 points Total up to 575 points Extra Credit Two (2) artistic reviews are available; worth up to 25 points each. Experience art first-hand and write a 2 page review. Do not research for this assignment - your views and perceptions of the artworks is what s important for this assignment. Due by 2/19/14 POINT SPREAD FOR GRADES: = A = B = C = D 214 or less = F Participation Points: These points are earned in two ways; first by taking part in online discussions and by responding in writing to whatever took place in the classroom during our limited number of meetings. Rubrics for Scoring Research Assignments: Page 4 of 7
5 The Research Paper: must meet the required length fully: loss of points 5pts 50pts -The cover sheet point loss 1pts 5pts set up the cover according to guidelines - do not leave out information. The opening or the thesis statement is important and it tells what your paper will cover - do not put your personal views here; such as, why you have selected this topic or your personal views about the artist or your artwork selection. - No font size over 12 picas (letters) loss of points (lop) 5-15pts. - No large spaces between the lines and or paragraphs: loss of points 5 10pts - No empty spaces before or after your topic. 5 20pts. - Need editing (LOP) 5pts 30pts - (MLA format required) could lose 25 pts - Context focus on researched data no personal views in the body of research if you must provide your views place them in your conclusion and call it the conclusion or summation. 10 pts 40 pts. NOTE: DO NOT SELECT TOPICS FROM THE CLASS TEXT OR LECTURES NOR POSTINGS. The oral presentation: Open by introducing yourself. Then tell your audience what the topic is that you will discuss. If it is a visual artwork show it and allow your audience time to participate with what they see. The same hold true for other artworks genres. - make eye contact with your audience and try to relax as you enjoy sharing your findings with your classmates. Do not just read to your audience; that would likely lose their attention. -be sure that the Instructor sees your artwork first, unless it s on a screen where everyone is able to see it at the same time. - do not say, I don t know or that you could not find information on any portion of your topic. Leave it out if you do not know and if you did not find any info on it. Organization and structure are key elements to a good research paper and presentation. Exams: First the syllabus exam so that students study it. There are six (6) short Chapter quizzes for this class; posted in Moodle bi-weekly and a final exam, also in Moodle and scheduled near the end of the term. Students are to take the quizzes and exam and send a copy of their finished quiz or exam to the Instructor by . Student Conduct: Page 5 of 7
6 The College has rules, which state that; dishonesty, disruption and/or obstruction of teaching as well as physical and/or verbal abuse of college personnel are forbidden. Disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. Students can and will be asked to leave or be escorted out by the campus police. Disciplinary action will be filed against the student for misconduct. Students should be aware of the college code of conduct in the catalogue. College of Alameda now forbids smoking outside classrooms entirely. Smokers who do not wish to be in violation must go to assigned areas. Classroom Conduct: Turn all cell phones off or place them in the vibrating mode. You are not to leave class to make or answer calls, do this on your break or after class. If you must smoke, please do not smoke on campus, instead go away from the buildings to an assigned area. California State Law forbids smoking inside public and/or private buildings. If it under your feet and/or over your head you are considered in the building and in violation. ADDITIONAL LOSS OF POINTS Written assignments: * Term papers - 5 to 50 points deducted for short papers, editing, and no late papers accepted. * Papers copied from the Internet or anywhere else will lose the full points (100) Research paper are required to have in-text citing of sources and should list those sources on the bibliography sheet; no more than two internet sources accepted, unless they are academic sites and no less than a total of five research sources. * Answering written questions, in the forum or in your paper; using text that is verbatim (or nearly so) from the textbook is explicitly not allowed, and will result in zero points being awarded * Extra Credit reviews - short, editing, and late assignments depending on length will loose from 5 to 15 points. Extra credit assignments must be recent first hand experience. No reviews will receive points if not experience firsthand. * Mid-Term assignment 40 points for each will be deducted for not having the oral along with art work and the required outline must not be changed into an essay format. Other reasons for loss of points Not attending the required in class meetings Not prepared not researched Late assignments and or late exams No outline or term paper to support your oral presentation Time spent presenting to short. Reading about your artwork or your artist (note cards ok). Plagiarized written assignments. Not posting in forums Using the class text as a research source. Page 6 of 7
7 INCREASE CHANCES OF POINTS: * Do come to class prepared to take notes and discuss the class assignments. * Do attend the in class meetings for required assignments; presentations and lectures. * Do the reading reading is an important part to students success and learning so make the effort to do your best, because anything worth doing is worth doing well. * Do consider extra credit reviews if you do not receive full points on any assignment and want to improve your chances for higher points. * Do respond to every forum discussion in order to earn participation points. * Do come to me with problems concerning the class. You may not need to drop the class. * Do visit the Learning Resource Center regularly for assistance with all written assignments. * Do not try to take this class without the book. The text is required. There are reserved copies of the texts in the Library s Resource section, for two hour use only. * Written assignment questions have to be composed entirely in your own words. * Do learn the three artistic terms for the visual arts in order to better understand and define your artwork selection and those studies in the text and online. * Do log into the class at least once a week. *The best way to earn high grade points in the discussion forum is to write posts that contain relevant content. Student Learning Outcomes: Students should develop a better understanding of the arts covered during this class. Students will have added ability to analyze the various art forms. Most of all; students completing the assignments will have a greater sense of what is involved in the works of various artists; understand the subject matter of a selection, Recognize the artistic form selected by the artists, and The importance of participation with any artistic work for greater understanding of human values Students should be able to hold intelligent conversations about the works of various artists, while pointing out why you like or dislike their works. Students will learn the difference between art for art sake and functional art. Students will increase their ability to speak in public and in front of an audience. Page 7 of 7
