1 Program Review Title: Program Code: Review Type: Type: Chaffey College Program Review Report CINEMA CINEMA Instructional SLO's Overview of Chaffey College Program: Describe the program mission as it relates to the college mission: In partnership with the college s mission statement, the mission of the Cinema program is to provide a diverse student population with quality occupational and transfer classes related to the history, theory and production of cinema. Cinema is comprised of three programs: 1) Survey of World Cinema and Survey of American Cinema which meet the general education and transfer needs of Chaffey's students; (2) Scriptwriting, which is an occupational class preparing students to work in the story preparation and idea-development areas of cinema; and (3) Cinema Production, focusing on the technical aspects of the preproduction, production, and postproduction phases of the cinematic art. Program Changes NONE State how program/service addressed these recommendations Last year's program review was left incomplete at the direction of the dean of Visual and Performing Arts, and the Vice President of Instruction. 1. This document will address accountability. 2. Quantitative measures, where appropriate, will be addressed. 3. Proofreading will be part of this document's preparation. 4. Current activities will be included where specified. 5. Equipment requests will be made in the appropriate location in this document. New Activities and Outcomes 1. The film history courses include World Cinema (Cinema 25) and American Cinema (Cinema 26). Each of these course fulfills a transfer requirement to UC and CSU. Both courses emphasize appreciation, analysis, research, and deconstruction. Students are expected to submit written analyses of specified films as part of their evaluation. 1. Identify 3-5 learning outcome for each program in this discipline(add one at a time): 1. Student will be able to distinguish between early, silent cinema, classic Hollywood, and current cinema styles. 2. The student will be able to explain cinema story structure.
2 3. The student will be able to explain theme, plot, and dramatic points. 4. The student will comprehensively deconstruct, critically analyze, and evaluate at least one curent motion picture. Provide an assessment statement for one outcome for each program articulating the following (means of assessment, population to be assessed, point of assessment, and criteria for assessment): All students will be assessed in part by means of a written film analysis to be submitted to and scored by the instructor using a grading rubric and standard point based grading scale to be published in the syllabus. What were the results of the assessment for the outcome. If no data has yet been collected, please describe the plans for assessment: Assessment for Cinema classes is currently underway for a pilot run in a few course sections of Fall 07 Describe the response to the assessment results for the learning outcome (noting whether or not the assessment satisfactorily confirmed the outcome or indicating what instructional modifications will to be made for improvement) If no data is yet available, then this section does not apply: n/a Requests Faculty Request Category: Title: Instructor Cinema Priority: 1 FTE: 1 Previous Recommended: YES - Number of times: 2 Employee Status: Replacement Overload: YES This is a request for one FTE for Cinema and Broadcasting. It would be our hope to have this new hire teach in both Cinema and Broadcasting courses. Currently, there is only one FT faculty member covering both of these departments, Daniel Jacobo. Data in the FTEF tables varies dramatically due to the retirement of 1 FTE in Spr 07 as well as other FT faculty taking on cinema courses (such as Erik Jacobson). We also wonder if many of our double and 1.5 sections are counted as 1 in our section counts in the PSR data. We have been asked to add courses every semester and all courses have waitlists. We have also added sections for CIW and Montclair HS and all of our adjunct (that we can find) are at max load General Supplies Category: Budget Augmentation for creation of film library Price: 3500 Quantity: 1 Total Cost: 3500 Approve For Purchase: No Purchased: No We are in the process of acquiring a variety of American & world films (on DVD & video) to be
3 used in our courses. More and more of our courses are taught by adjunct faculty members. We need to supply the films used in all courses for availability and consistency for our students. They would be housed in the Broadcasting lab area and checked out (along with our other equipment) to faculty for classroom use. Students could also review films in the Broadcast lab. This is a joint request with Broadcasting. 2. Cinema 20 (Scriptwriting) comprises our second program. It enables students to experience a broad overview of scripwriting for diverse media formats with an emphasis on the feature film. Students will develop storytelling techniques with the help of writing theory and critical analysis of classical and contemporary literature and film. Furthermore, Cinema 20 is an occupational course (as well as a transferable course), since the skills learned are marketable in the film, television, and radio media. 1. Identify 3-5 learning outcome for each program in this discipline(add one at a time): 1. Student will be able to explain tragedy and comedy. 2. The student will be able to explain hero and conflict. 3. The student will assimilate and appraise 36 scriptwriting formulas. 4. The student will utilize and apply "Final Draft" software to complete his/her script. Provide an assessment statement for one outcome for each program articulating the following (means of assessment, population to be assessed, point of assessment, and criteria for assessment): All students will write a critical essay/project for 15% his/her grade that includes the explanation of the hero & conflict. A finished script will be required that utilizes the Final Draft software. We hope to dvelop a rubric to assess this finished script. What were the results of the assessment for the outcome. If no data has yet been collected, please describe the plans for assessment: Assessment data is being collected for compilation at the end of the Fall 07 semester. Describe the response to the assessment results for the learning outcome (noting whether or not the assessment satisfactorily confirmed the outcome or indicating what instructional modifications will to be made for improvement) If no data is yet available, then this section does not apply: n/a Requests Instructional Software Category: Final Draft scriptwriting software upgrade for existing licenses Price: 5500 Quantity: 1.0 Total Cost: 5500 Recommended For Yes Purchase: Purchased: Yes This is a site license update/upgrade for two Final Draft software programs (AV for radio & television, and another for motion pictures and television drama). This joint request because the software is applicable to all Cinema and Broadcasting production classes. This software is the industry standard. 3. Cinema Production is the third component of the department, and is comprised of Cinema 30 (Cinema
4 Production) and Cinema 80 (Producing for Broadcast and Cinema). These courses emphasize the methodology, theory, and aesthetics of cinematography for motion-pictures and television together with the technical requirements for preproduction, production, and post production phases. Furthermore, Cinema Production is an occupational component the Cinema department, since the skills aquired are marketable in the television and film industries. 1. The student will synthesize a basic overview of the historical practices and personnel involved in the three phases of the filmmaking process. 2. The student will identify and apply the use of various film stocks and emulsions for use in film/digital cameras and other non-linear technology. 3. The student will develop and produce story sequences while using traditional filmic techniques in lighting, composition, and framing while generating a unique mis-en-scene. 4. The student will analyze, categorize, and structure film footage for later editing within a digital, non-linear environment. 5. The student will create and design projects to be mastered on digital formats such as tape, disk, rich media, and digital streaming. Provide an assessment statement for one outcome for each program articulating the following (means of assessment, population to be assessed, point of assessment, and criteria for assessment): Lab work and cinematic projects are the among the planned means of assessment for all students. The fulltime cinema/broadcasting faculty member will develop grading rubrics. What were the results of the assessment for the outcome. If no data has yet been collected, please describe the plans for assessment: The assessment phase will begin Spring 08. This processor is a necessary component for post-production editing. This is a used device being offered to us by a company called Pro 8mm. Ordinarily, this unit costs $400,000, but is being offered at a discount price (with warranty). Please see attachment to this PSR for more explanation.
