2 The University of Sheffield Welcome to the University of Sheffield (TUoS) which received its royal charter in 1905 as successor to the Sheffield Medical School (1828) and University College of Sheffield (1897). As one of the original red brick universities, it is also a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research intensive universities. We have over 25,000 students from around 130 countries who study in 45 academic departments in five faculties. ELTC The English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) is one of the largest university English language centres in the UK, and is part of Student Services at the University of Sheffield. The Centre is accredited by the British Council and is authorised by the University of Cambridge ESOL as an exam centre and for ELT teaching awards. It is also an International English Language Testing (IELTS) Centre. With over 70 teachers and 15 administrative and support staff, the ELTC teaches and supports around 3,000 students a year on a range of programmes. The ELTC is housed in a purpose-built facility, opened in 2010, which includes modern rooms and well-equipped computer suites, as well as advanced audio-visual equipment and learning resources. We hope that you enjoy your time with us during the summer programme. University English (UE) Programme Summer 2018 What is UE? The University of Tokyo Summer Programme is a three-week programme within our ten-week International Summer School University English (UE), and is designed to help you improve your general level of English and your accuracy when using grammar and vocabulary, and written and spoken communication. TODAI students join these UE es in the mornings according to their levels, and use the course from Cambridge University Press: Empower. How will the course help me? The programme aims to help you in the following ways: Improve your ability to understand spoken and written English in a variety of contexts Improve your ability to express yourself orally in a range of situations Improve your accuracy and understanding of grammar and vocabulary Give you practice in all skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing Review what you have learned each week to help you understand better before moving to a new theme and grammar/vocabulary area Help to improve your listening skills in an academic context My Level When you start your course, you will complete the Cambridge Online Placement test so that we can place you in a for your level. es What will I study in the morning es? The course books for the morning es are from the Cambridge Empower series. The books are organised around topics or themes, such as Modern Life, The Natural World etc., which provide the context for teaching specific grammar points, vocabulary and language functions, as well as developing language skills. You will study selected topics or themes, grammar, vocabulary, and communicative skills appropriate for your level. You will study one unit of the course book each week and the theme or topic will depend on when you arrive and the course book for your level. You will have two teachers each week, one is your Tutor, who will teach you on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, and the other is your second teacher, who will teach you on Wednesdays and Thursdays. What will I do in the Afternoons? TODAI students have a special lecture series which is presented in the afternoon on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Students are divided into two groups which each have different set of lectures: one on Science and one on Arts and Humanities topics. The afternoons consist of a preparatory lesson, the lecture itself and a post-lecture feedback session. Lectures are given by top lecturers from the main university and will be on a variety of different academic topics that will be 2

3 accessible to everyone. On Wednesday afternoons you join the other UE students for the weekly UE lecture. What will my timetable look like? 4 Important Information Social Programme We have a lively social programme arranged by our Social Programme team. There is a wide variety of activities during the course (e.g. Quiz night, International Night) and you will be given information about the programme each week. One afternoon per week there is a football game and other evening activities (e.g. barbecue). This is a good opportunity to meet people from around the world and practise your language skills in an informal situation. Most Saturdays/Sundays there is a day trip to a relatively nearby city (e.g. Leeds, York). There may be a charge for these and tickets are available from the online shop ( If you have any questions about the social programme, the Social Organisers are based in the Oasis, Hoyle Street. Tutorials You will have a tutorial when you arrive and one before you leave. This is an opportunity to discuss things privately with your tutor. Student Feedback Before you leave the programme, you have to complete an online student feedback form. This is usually done on your last Friday. Please use this opportunity to tell us about the course. Course Assessment and Reports After you have completed the online feedback, you will be given a certificate of attendance and a progress report with comments from your tutor about your progress during the course. Attendance It is important that you attend all your lessons and this is recorded every lesson. If you are unable to attend for any reason please contact ELTC reception on (0114) so your teachers can be informed. Computers You have access to computers all around the University, including the computer labs at ELTC. Printing is available in most of the computer centres. You can use your UCard to print. Your Ucard is provided with credit and there are top-up machines in the main IT Centres (e.g. Library) and Information Commons (IC). Most areas in the University including the ELTC have free Wi-Fi.
