1 City of Angels School Independent Study- Los Angeles Unified School District Instructional Guide US History & Geography 8B: Growth and Conflict (Grade 8) Course ID # This course is the second semester of US History and Geography: Growth and Conflict, the standard eighth grade Social Studies course and a requirement for middle school. Content Material covered in this course will include the CA Social Studies Content Standards for 8th grade and Common Core Anchor Standards for Reading (Grades 6-12), Reading Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies and Writing Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies. Instructional Component 2: Foreign Policy, Divergent Paths (Standards 8.5, 8.6, 8.7, 8.8, 8.9) 8.5 Students analyze U.S. foreign policy in the early Republic. 8.6 Students analyze the divergent paths of the American people from 1800 to the mid-1800s and the challenges they faced, with emphasis on the Northeast. 8.7 Students analyze the divergent paths of the American people in the South from 1800 to the mid-1800s and the challenges they faced. 8.8 Students analyze the divergent paths of the American people in the West from 1800 to the mid-1800s and the challenges they faced. 8.9 Students analyze the early and steady attempts to abolish slavery and to realize the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. Instructional Component 3: Civil War, Reconstruction, Industrialization (Standards 8.10, 8.11, 8.12) 8.10 Students analyze the multiple causes, key events and complex consequences of the Civil War Students analyze the character and lasting consequences of Reconstruction Students analyze the transformation of the American economy and the changing social and political conditions in the United States in response to the Industrial Revolution Text: Creating America: A History of the United States, McDougall Littel, 2006 Websites: Some coursework can be completed online. It is recommended that students who have internet access at home, use the course website at to complete their coursework. The course website is the online version of this syllabus; its content matches the content in this instructional guide, except that it includes links to online activities and resources keyed to each lesson from the websites listed below. See your teacher for user names and passwords Textbook companion website includes several resources for each chapter and section in the textbook including self-check tests, puzzles and games, and online lessons. (no password required.) 2. Interactive, online, personalized program provides supplementary lessons in all core subjects grades Features teacher and student accounts. (Supplemental activities; user name required) 3. Indexed video library affiliated with the Discovery Channel. Includes some lessons plans and quizzes. (Supplemental activities; user name and password required) 4. Library of free digital media resources produced by public television, designed for classroom use and professional development. (Supplemental activities; user name and password required) Grades: Each week s lesson is worth 100 points. The breakdown is as follows: Chapter Assignments-60 points Weekly Chapter Assessment-20 points Supplemental Activity-15 points Weekly Assignments will be graded based on the following standard breakdown for work complete/correct: A= % B= 80-89% C= 70-79% D= 60-69% F= 0-59% Weekly coursework makes up 95% of your final course grade. The Final Exam or Project will constitute the remaining 5%.
