1 Saint Catherine of Siena Lesson: Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire A lesson in which KS2 students learn about and experience the practise of Christian Meditation, as inspired by the life of Catherine of Siena Lesson Plan
2 P2 INTRODUCTION Introduction Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire Finding moments of stillness and calm amidst the frenetic pace and busyness of school life can be a challenge, but it is a challenge worth taking on. Christian meditation can be a powerful tool with which children can be encouraged to pay attention to the small voice of calm within them, and thereby allow God s Spirit to live and move within their lives. This resource gives students and teachers the opportunity to have a go at Christian meditation, whilst also learning something of the life of Catherine of Siena, the 14th century mystic and theologian whose commitment to meditating on God sustained, strengthened and motivated her life of service. Before using the lesson material, teachers should become familiar with Appendix 5: An introduction to Christian meditation. This gives some background information about how to meditate and also provides the opportunity to practice yourself before leading the children in a meditation.

I can explain some of the ways in which people benefit from Christian meditation, and describe my own experience of how it can deepen my sense of God s presence. 3. 4 P4 TEACHER SCRIPT Teacher Script Title and introduce lesson objectives Slides 1-2 Timing: 2 mins As students enter and settle, play the Gregorian chanting on the youtube clip provided to help establish a meditative environment. Explain the lesson objectives and introduce the quote on the title slide by explaining that this was said by Catherine of Siena, a 14th century mystic and theologian who was convinced by the value of Christian meditation, she made it her life s work. Slide 1 Today we are going to have a very different experience of learning. We will be learning about the life of St Catherine of Siena. Catherine lived in the 14th century and spent much of her life praying and talking about God. She had an amazing understanding of what it meant to feel close to God. In fact, her personal connection to God was so strong that she spent 3 years meditating silently in his presence. This meant that she prayed in her heart to God, using very simple words and images. Catherine believed that meditating helped her to be the person God wanted her to be. What do you think she meant by Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire? Note, there is no right answer. Simply encourage the students to consider what they think it means. Some suggested questions are as follows: Lower Middle Upper What does fire do? Possible answers: it burns things up, it gives light and heat How can you be the person God meant you to be? Possible answers: personal responses connected to using talents, having Can you remember any times in the bible when God appears as fire? Answer: in the Old Testament story of the Burning bush, at Pentecost on the
5 P5 TEACHER SCRIPT Lower Middle Upper What words do you associate with fire? Possible answers: fire, heat, light, warmth, uncontrollable How do you know when you are close to fire? Possible answers: you feel the warmth, it s cosy, you can hear and see it confidence, loving others etc. What would be the effects of being who God has made you to be on the world you live in? Possible answers: it would be a happier place, everyone would be kinder to each other Disciples heads. Why do you think God appeared to Moses/the Disciples as fire? Possible answers: to show his power, to burn away what isn t pure, to show his warmth etc. We are then going to try out some Christian meditation ourselves, so let s listen to the music as we write out the title in our books, and get ourselves into a calm and peaceful mood. Slide 2 Read out the three lesson objectives. Starter When do you feel close to God? Slides 3-4 Timing: 5 mins Slide 3 When do you feel close to God? Look at the images They may remind you of times when you have felt close to God. There may be other times or places when you have felt particularly close to God.
6 P6 TEACHER SCRIPT Slide 4 As the children are having their conversations, click once to play music Talk to your partner about times when you feel close to God Describe how feeling close to God made you feel? Did these times make you do anything differently? Think anything differently? Behave in a different way? Ask some students to feedback to the whole class about times when they have felt close to God, how this made them feel, and whether it made them do, think, or behave any differently. Lower Middle Upper All answers from personal experience Questions: Can you think of any times when you have felt close to God? Where were you? Who were you with? When was this? What were you doing? All answers from personal experience Questions: Did feeling close to God make you think any differently? Did it make you do anything differently? All answers from personal experience Questions: What helps you feel close to God? What stops you feeling close to God? Can meditating help me feel close to God? Slide 5 Timing: 10 mins Slide 5 Appendix 1 Some children and adults use Christian meditation as a way of praying and feeling close to God. We are going to watch a short film to find out how some children and
7 P7 TEACHER SCRIPT adults benefit from meditating and hear about their experiences of meditation in school. As we hear what different adults and children say about why they meditate and what happens when they meditate, we are going to tick their comments off on our sheet. Let s read together the comments we will be listening out for before we watch the film. Read the speech bubbles on Appendix 1 so the children know what they are listening out for. Listen out for the comments in the speech bubbles and tick them off as you hear them. When you have ticked off all the responses, shout out MARANATHA! Show film. The responses on the worksheet should be ticked off as children hear them, or see them. The first child to tick off all the words, shouts Maranatha!. Lower ability children may benefit from working in pairs or with a teacher. In light of your own preparation, hold a brief discussion about some of the key features of Christian meditation. Make sure you extract the following key features from the discussion: The importance of silence and stillness The importance of repeating a word such as maranatha to yourself The importance of paying attention to the things you are thinking, feeling, seeing and hearing. Make the point that everyone who meditates - adults and
8 P8 TEACHER SCRIPT children - will get distracted as things enter their mind. This is where it is helpful to use a word like maranatha to help you give the distractions to God and stay close to Him. Some discussion pointers are listed below: Lower Middle Upper Questions: What did the children do when they meditated? Were their eyes open or shut? Were they sitting or standing? Were they still or moving? What did the children to to help them avoid distractions? What did meditation help the children to notice? Who was St Catherine of Siena? Slide 6 Timing: 15 mins Slide 6 Appendix 2 Appendix 3 The children in the film were inspired by the life of Catherine of Siena, a 14th Century who spent 3 years of her life meditating in God s presence. Let s watch a couple more minutes of the film as the children find out a bit more about her. Show film. Now we are going to make a story board showing the key events in Catherine of Siena s life. Use pictures to illustrate the captions. Give out copies of Appendix 2 (most children) and 3 (children needing support) as relevant. When the children have finished their story boards, encourage them to select the event that they think was the most significant in Catherine s life.
9 P9 TEACHER SCRIPT Suggestions for differentiation can be found below: Appendix 3 - Lower Lower ability children could work with a partner to order the events using Appendix 3. (The event cards should be cut up before the lesson.) The children could then illustrate the cards. Upper Once they have completed the story board, higher ability children could be asked. They should show on their story board which event they think was the most significant in Catherine s life and explain why. They could also be asked: What have you learnt from St Catherine for your own life? Have a go at meditating Slide 7 Timing: 10 mins Slide 7 Appendix 5 Teachers Guide to Leading a Class Meditation Use your Teachers Guide (Appendix 5, page 2) help lead the children in a 5-10 minute meditation. Use your discretion with the timing according to the age of the children and the timings of the lesson. Start by reminding them of what they saw the children in the film doing, i.e sitting still, shutting eyes, using the phrase Maranatha (Come Lord Jesus) to help they stay focused. Share your reflections with your partner, ready to feedback to the class. Close the lesson with some class reflections on their experience of meditation. Ask the children how this type of
10 P10 TEACHER SCRIPT prayer can help us to have a deeper sense of God being with us. Lower Middle Upper What did you see/ hear/feel or think when you were meditating? How can this type of prayer help you to have a deeper sense of God? Questions: What happens when you have a deeper sense of God? What might change in you when you have a deeper sense of God?
