27 Welcome to GCSE English Language OVERVIEW Two examinations June 2017 Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing 1 hour 45 50% of GCSE Candidates answer 4 reading questions based on one 20th/21 st Century fiction text and one descriptive/narrative writing question No coursework One Speaking and Listening assessment Paper 2: Writers Viewpoints and Perspectives 1 hour 45 minutes - 50% of GCSE Candidates answer 4 reading questions based on two 19 th /20 th /21 st Century non fiction textsand one persuasive writing question Speaking and Listening Approx. 10 minutes Individual Task and Discussion. 0% of total marks.

28 Language Examinations Candidates are tested on their ability to understand four key areas of reading: information retrieval, language, structure and critical evaluation. The reading questions will remain the same every year but the extracts are unseen. The writing assessments test candidates ability to punctuate, spell, paragraph, use literary techniques and to express themselves accurately and imaginatively.

29 Speaking and Listening Part 1 A 3-4 minute presentation on a subject of the candidate s choice. Part 2 Discussion about the candidate s choice of subject (6 7 minutes) Graded Pass/Merit/ Distinction 0% of total marks.

30 OVERVIEW Welcome to GCSE English Literature Paper 1: Shakespeare and 19 th Century Novel 1 hour 45 40% of total GCSE Two examinations May 2017 Candidates answer one question on Macbeth and one question on A Christmas Carol No coursework Paper 2: Poetry and Modern Text 2 hour 15 minutes - 60% of GCSE Candidates answer one question on poetry from a pre-released anthology, two questions on two unseen poems and a question on An Inspector Calls or Lord of the Flies

31 Literature Examinations In Paper 1, candidates are tested on their ability to analyse an extract from the text and explain how it relates to the rest of the play/novel. It is a closed book examination and therefore candidates will need to learn key quotations. In Paper 2, candidates are tested on both seen and unseen poems plus a modern (20 th /21 st century) text.

43 What are we doing? Regular assessment in class end of topic tests after each unit. Students have had feedback and will get full analysis next week. Specialist teachers for each discipline. Dedicated coursework day first one December 9 th. Revision sessions Monday to Wednesday Revision guides and work books- available to buy at a discounted rate. Heavy focus in lessons on exam technique.

44 Exam technique Big focus on application of science: How do we use this in real life? Read the question carefully if it s a 2 mark question you need to make 2 key points 6 mark question is crucial. (key vocab!) Use of Calculations and interpretation of data is essential.

47 What can you do to help Encourage attendance at revision sessions Test them on key vocabulary, definitions, calculations and equations (booklet to come home.) Keep in touch we ll let you know regularly how things are going, please let us know if you have any concerns or requests.

49 In order to be eligible to attend Year 11 Prom you MUST ensure that you achieve the following; 95% or above attendance level 50 after College catch up/revision sessions Graduate with the IBACC Achieve positive behaviour points Miss Hurrell will assess each student s eligibility to attend Prom individually and SLT will have the final say on which year 11 students are invited to attend.
