1 Library Committee Date: January 28, 2015 Location: Shields Library, Conference Room 101 Time: 2-3 p.m. 1. Approval of Meeting Summary 2. Briefing by Roger Schonfeld, the lead consultant from Ithaka, on the Library Survey and the preliminary report

2 Library Committee Date: December 18 Location: Mrak 410 Time: 1-2 pm Present M. Craig (chair), M. Rogawski, J. Chen, M. Smith, S. Blozis, K. Gee, S. Nichols, M. Christopher, L. Grivetti, B. Kolner, J. Manning, D. Ventry, E. Haro (analyst) Approval of Summary Action: the committee voted to approve the meeting summary. Library Survey Preliminary Report Mackenzie Smith and Deputy University Librarian, Bill Garrity made a brief presentation on the recently completed UC Davis Academic Senate and Academic Federation Survey. Preliminary results are in and are summarized in a report that was handed out in print form at the meeting. An electronic copy is also available on the Library Committee Whiteboard. The Ithaka representative has been asked to visit the campus the week of January 26 th. Meeting with the library committee is of high importance during the visit. The visit is still being planned and the date can be moved if necessary to accommodate a meeting with the committee. Open Access Policy Proposal Response The committee supports the open access policy proposal. However, the following questions have arisen with further evaluation of the policy. Are there differences between the Academic Senate policy and the new policy? How does the regulation work if there are multiple authors? For example, how would it be handled if one author wanted to release the work but another author was opposed? Action: The committee decided to continue the discussion via the ASIS whiteboard. Comments are to be posted by Dec 23 rd 12pm. Chair Craig will then create a letter based on the comments and submit it before the deadline.

3 Library Committee/ Library Communication Following a brief discussion of the committee s need for information regarding the university libraries, it was decided that committee members would send Chair Craig any comments or questions that they have about the library for forwarding onto the University Librarian.

6 Overview The University of California, Davis implementation of the Ithaka S+R Local Faculty Survey was launched on October 13, 2014, and was closed to new responses on November 15, 2014, with a total of 1,314 complete responses. The survey covers many scholarly research and teaching-related topics, overlapping with several iterations of the Ithaka S+R U.S. Faculty Survey. The questionnaire covers topics in several key areas, including: how scholars discover materials for research; faculty members data preservation and management behaviors and needs; faculty members views of their students research skills; their digital research activities and methodologies; the ways faculty members access content; and the role of the library in supporting faculty members needs. The following report provides a high-level overview of findings from the UC Davis faculty survey. 1 Details A population of all 5,104 UC Davis individuals who are either Academic Senate faculty or Academic Federation personnel received an invitation to participate in a survey about the impact of electronic technologies on their research and teaching. 2 Five reminders were sent before the close of the survey. In total, 1,542 respondents started the survey (30%), and 1,314 of those respondents completed the survey, for an overall response rate of about 26%. Due to the survey flow and skip patterns, not all UC Davis respondents received every question in the survey. How to interpret the findings For each question in the UC Davis survey, this document provides a graph and table of overall responses. Responses are generally grouped together into categories for questions where respondents are asked to respond on a 1 to 10 scale. We report on responses in three categories: 1-3 (strong negative response), 4-7 (moderate or indifferent response), and 8-10 (strong positive response). Questions that use a 1-6 scale, and their responses are similarly grouped into categories: 1-2 (strong negative response), 3-4 (moderate or indifferent response), and 5-6 (strong positive response). Title pages provide information about survey flow and contingent items, which signify 1 This report covers results from completed surveys and does not include an overview of partially completed responses. Partially completed responses are included in the spreadsheet of raw data. 2 The maximum n is 5,105, but there was 1 direct bounce back . The population invited to participate in the survey included all UC Davis individuals who are either Academic Senate faculty or Academic Federation personnel, as well as personnel with the title Postdoc.
