2 Part II 1. Course Aims: This course aims to explore psychological theories and empirical research that can explain interpersonal behaviour and relations. Students will be able to apply and evaluate Western concepts, theories and research findings in analysing their daily transactions within a local context. 2. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: No. CILOs 1. describe concepts, theories and empirical research findings that can explain interpersonal behaviour and relations; 2. apply relevant Western theoretical concepts and research findings critically in explaining and discussing issues of interpersonal relations within a local context; 3. analyse the psychological processes that undergo with the formation, development and changes of human relationships; and 4. evaluate critically the impacts of cultural, social and demographic variables on interpersonal behaviour and relations. 3 3. Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs) (Indicative of likely activities and tasks designed to facilitate students achievement of the CILOs. Final details will be provided to students in their first week of attendance in this course) CILO No. TLA1 TLA2 TLA3 Hours / course (if applicable) CILO 1 CILO 2 CILO 3 CILO 4 Describe the TLAs: TLA1: Web Forum Students will be required to participate actively (such as providing critical comments) in the web forum discussions. There will be four topics on the web forum. Students are required to read one to two assigned paper(s) and/or chapter(s) for each forum so that they are equipped with necessary basic knowledge and skills for further self-discovery of knowledge in these areas. Students have to post up questions, feedback and comments on topics covered in the course. They will be required to apply relevant psychological concepts and theories in their comments to others. When posting questions related to personal relationship experiences, anonymity is allowed for protection of privacy. TLA2: Lectures Lectures will be focused on explaining pertinent theories and research in interpersonal psychology to build up students competence in various areas of interpersonal relations. Students will be required to participate actively in lectures. TLA3: Group project Emphasis will be on two dimensions: cross-cultural (East-West), and intergenerational (traditional-contemporary Chinese) in the discussion of the chosen topic. Students will be required to present their project and to write a report as a term paper. It can promote higher-order thinking skills through evaluation of applicability of western concepts and theories across cultures and over time, and by generation of self-owned products (oral presentation and written report).

AT2: Individual or group paper (40%) Students are required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the topic under research, and to logically argue and analyse the observed phenomenon to fit in a local context. Through this assignment, students can further integrate their learnt knowledge to create a product for themselves. By analysing factors that may contribute to better interpersonal relationships, it can further develop a more positive attitude in learning this subject. AT3: Web Forum (10%) Marks will be awarded to students who can demonstrate the ability to articulate pertinent theories in explaining the daily transactions about interpersonal behaviour. Higher marks will be awarded to students who can demonstrate critical thinking skills and can offer innovative ideas in the web forum. 5. Grading of Student Achievement: Refer to Grading of Courses in the Academic Regulations. Letter Grade A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D F Grading criteria in relation to CILOs Demonstrate excellent understanding of the theories of interpersonal relations. Apply Western theories and giving examples to local context in a critical manner. Critically compare, contrast and evaluate different interpersonal relations theories and concepts. An outstanding capability to analyze the psychological processes of human relationships. The term paper and presentation are excellently and innovatively conducted to examine the interpersonal relations phenomenon. Reasonable understanding of the theories of interpersonal relations. Showing a good capability in applying Western theories and giving examples to local context. The term paper and presentation are properly conducted to examine the interpersonal relations phenomenon. Ability to understand the theories of interpersonal relations in a general way. Limited capability in applying Western theories and giving examples to local context. The term paper and presentation are fairly conducted. Limited familiarity with the theories of interpersonal relations. The term paper and presentation are poorly conducted.
