26 HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF SUPERVISION What is this course for? This course has been written in response to a recognition that supervisees need help to understand the process called supervision and to enable them to get as much out of the sessions as quickly as possible. It is too often assumed that if the supervisor is trained, then you, the supervisee, will know how to make the best use of her/him. This is a false assumption and that knowing how to use supervision requires preparation, care and skill, not only by the supervisor, but also on your own behalf. Supervision is protected time for you, the worker, to work on practice-related issues which are important to you, your work and your agency. This course aims to help you as a supervisee to maximise the benefits of these sessions by exercising your entitlement to, and responsibilities in, supervision. Supervision cannot and should not be done to you but should be undertaken in partnership with you. This course aims to help you to be a full partner in this key relationship Who is the course for? This particular course has been organised for Stockport Family Early Year s Workers and Health Visitor/School Nurse Skill mix staff who are line managed by a Health Visitor/School Nurse. The course assumes that you: You want to do a good job and don t want to be ineffective in your work You care a great deal about service users Your performance is influenced by a complex range of factors involving the service user, yourself, your manager and your organisation and partners You can and will develop in your practice those things which make sense to you You work best when you have clear targets in view Your self-esteem and sense of competence are crucial to your performance at work. They need to be maintained through evidence based practice and reflection You work best when you have a purposeful connection with your organisation and your colleagues and are clear about your role and expectations Why is it important? This course is based on the key belief that good supervision is an essential component in developing and sustaining good practice and your motivation as a worker and that supervision is part of the intervention with service users. How will participants benefit from the programme? How to make the most of supervision is designed to help supervisees to: Identify what is supervision Recognise the benefits of supervision Understand and practise developing reflective practice Maximise the use of supervision sessions How much work will participants have to do? The course uses a self-development manual to be worked through. It is an open learning text so there are exercises for you to engage in with the facilitator who will take the lead in using this manual. Continues
