1 TRUMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN 2017/2018 District Improvement Plan Goal: Academic Excellence All students will perform at or above grade level and achievement/opportunity gaps among all student groups will be eliminated. Mathematics Improvement Plan Goals for Truman Middle School: We will use i-ready fall screener results for our baseline data. (Student numbers are based on actual number of students tested fall of 2017) 6 th grade 36% (79) students to 56% (144) students 7 th grade 31% (61) students to 51% (101) students 8 th grade 29% (69) students to 49% (119) students Mathematics Improvement Plan Goals for Truman Middle School: We will increase the percent of students at or above standards by an average of 20% per grade level as measured by i-ready screener after the Spring administration of the assessment. Strategies: Align instructional strategies of math to meet the rigor of DOK levels 3 & 4. Use i-ready mastery assessments bi-monthly in order to monitor students learning Preview i-ready mastery assessments for instructional planning Provide additional during advisory for teacher to analyze student assessment data Use Engaged New York primary curriculum to plan instructional strategies Co-plan with a focus on differentiated instruction in order to challenge advance learners Co-plan with a focus on differentiated instruction in order to enhance the instruction for our challenging learners Effectively use the co-teach model to increase academic achievement for students with IEPs. Use Title-Poverty funding to offer after school intervention for students not meeting standard on i-ready mastery assessments. Providing quarterly skill development classes for student not meeting standard on i-ready mastery Use online Think Trough Math learning intervention strategies to increase proficiency for level 1 and 2 students. Make use of frequent formative assessments in mathematics classrooms at all grade levels. Make use of research based high yield instructional strategies to increase student engagement. Collaborate vertically as well as grade level in order to collectively ensure all Truman students learn math at a high level.

Strategies: Provide math team with extra planning time using building budget. Co-plan with a focus on differentiated instruction in order to challenge advance learners Co-plan with a focus on differentiated instruction in order to enhance the instruction for our challenging learners Effectively use the co-teach model to increase academic achievement for students with IEPs. 7 District Improvement Plan Goal: Partnerships - We will fully engage our parents, community and staff in the education of our students. Partnership Goals for Truman Middle School: By January of 2018 we will establish a school-wide equity team to reach out to parents to provide a more inclusive learning environment for our students, their parents and guardians, and community members. Partnership Goals for Truman Middle School: We will increase our PTSA membership by 50% for parents and guardians. We will also increase the number of staff members signing up for PTSA to 100%. Strategies: PTSA sign up tables at all school wide events PTSA officers present at staff meetings PTSA involvement in school wide fund raisers PTSA membership forms available in the main office

9 College Preparedness Improvement Plan Goals Establish a school-wide college readiness culture and promotion for high school and post high school education College Preparedness Goals for Truman Middle School: Truman Middle School students will gain an increased knowledge and understanding of High School Graduation requirements and post high school education opportunities by incorporating AVID strategies as well as EDGE Coaching strategies school-wide. College Preparedness Goals for Truman Middle School: Twice yearly, Truman Middle School will create and use one SMART goal relating to high school and college in the AVID classrooms. STRATEGIES: Incorporate AVID strategies school-wide Sign-up all students eligible for College Bound Scholars AVID coordinator present AVID strategies monthly during staff meeting EDGE coach present coaching strategies during staff EDGE and AVID coordinator plans field trips

Partnership Goals for Truman Middle School: By June of 2018, we will establish a partnership with the YMCA to bring a full time on site coordinator and community partner liaison to create a Truman MS YMCA partnership program. Partnership Goals for Truman Middle School: We will increase our extra-curricular participation rates by reducing the number of students who are not participating in any club or sport by 50%. We will also increase the number of students participating in 1 or more sports or clubs by 10%. Strategies: Meet and build common vision for YMCA services at TMS Develop community partners for afterschool programs Recruit students to participate Afterschool snacks Afterschool academic support Extra-curricular activities survey

No Suspensions and Expulsions Goals for Truman Middle School: By June of 2018, we will reduce 6 th and 8 th grade suspensions and expulsions by 10% in each grade level. No Suspension and Expulsions Goal for Truman Middle School: During the 2017/2016 school year we had 202 major discipline incidents that lead to a suspension or emergency expulsion. By June of 2018 we will reduce our major discipline incidents by 50%. By June of 2018, we will increase parent participation rates from 236 (2015) to 400 by June By June of 2018, we will increase staff participation rates from 28 to 100% by June 2018 Climate Survey Goal for Truman Middle School: Increase the rate at which students participate in the student climate survey from; 48% in the 6 th grade (TPS 61%), 86% in the 7 th grade (TPS 49%), 13% in the 8 th grade (TPS 45%). Climate Survey Goal for Truman Middle School: By June of 2018, we will increase the number of 8 th graders earning a C or better in English Language Arts from 84.8% to 90% and or maintain an average above Tacoma Public Schools 81%. Strategies: 8 th grade advisory students look up and monitor grades. 8 th grade advisory teachers work with 8 th grade students to monitor grades. Extended learning opportunities with ELA teaching staff Social studies and science provides standards support in informational text to students. 8 th grade promotional policies reflect a common standard with athletics.
