Course Description This course is comparable to second-year high school algebra. Topics include: functions and their applications (linear, exponential, quadratic, polynomial, rational, and radical functions), creating algebraic models from data, systems of equations and inequalities, exponents, polynomial algebra (special products and factoring), and the appropriate use of graphing technology as a solution method. Expectations Attend each class session, on time, ready to learn! You will be held responsible for any materials missed or any announcements made in your absence. Announcements will be posted on Moodle and/or MML. (Access Moodle through VIP, OR type in ). You ll need your username and password. Bring your calculator and all course work to each class session. Calculators are the only electronic tools allowed during class! Turn off and stow cell phones and other devices so as to not disrupt the learning of your classmates. Participate in discussions and class activities. Being an active participant helps you better understand the material and makes the class more enjoyable. Class time is not the appropriate time to catch up on sleep, text message your friends, listen to music, or surf the internet. Do your own work unless told otherwise. The KVCC Academic Dishonesty policy will be enforced. Ask for help when you need it. It is not in your best interest to fall behind! If you tend to need extra time to complete tests, please talk to me in advance about taking your tests in the Testing Center. Visit the Learning Center (room 2220) for free extra help. 2 Evaluation Homework (worth 100 points) All homework will be completed and submitted online using My Math Lab. You ll be provided with a separate handout explaining how to access and use the program. There will be a small number of problems assigned for each section we cover. Additionally, a few assignments may be completed on paper and collected in class. Due dates for submitting homework will appear on MML. Your overall percent on homework at the end of the semester will be scaled to 100 points. For instance, if you earn 82.4% on homework at semester s end, that correlates to 82.4 out of 100 points in the homework category. In-Class Activities and Review Sheets: (worth 100 points) In-class activities (ICA s) can happen at any time during the class period and may be in the form of group work, practice problems, a writing assignment, or a quiz. Their purpose is to help reinforce current topics being covered. Review sheets are designed to help you prepare for each of the tests. At least one class session before each test, you will be given a review sheet containing questions similar to those you will find on the test. Some questions may be completed with your group, others on your own. Correct answers will be discussed before the test is administered. An answer key will also be available on Moodle. You must be present to complete in-class activities and review sheets no make-ups will be allowed. If you come to class late and a task has already begun, you will not have extra time to complete it, and you may not earn full points. Unless told otherwise, if you leave early, you may not earn full points. Your overall percent on ICA s/review Sheets at the end of the semester will be scaled to 100 points. For instance, if you earn 94% on ICA s/review Sheets, that correlates to 94 out of 100 points in this category. Tests: 100 points each; 400 points total) As a rule, I do not give make-up tests. However, if you miss a test due to an extended illness or other valid, documented reason, please contact me by phone or on or before test day. Provided that your effort has been consistent, private arrangements for a make-up test may be made. If a voic or is not received by the end of the test day, you will not be able to make up the test. Final Exam: (100 points) A comprehensive (cumulative) final exam worth 100 points will be given at the end of the semester. There will be an emphasis on material learned in Chapters 8, 9, and 11 since there won t be a separate test on those objectives. MATH/VENDEVILLE/MATH116/ 2 8/17/2011
3 Miscellaneous: o Dropped scores: Occasionally, you may encounter circumstances that prevent you from attending class to participate in learning activities. To accommodate these situations, I will drop some low scores at the end of the semester. Out of all the in-class activities and review sheets, your lowest two scores will be dropped. In addition, the lowest four homework scores will be dropped. o Grade replacement: Your score on the final exam will replace your lowest test grade OR your homework grade, thus, your Final Exam would count twice. If your Final Exam grade is lower than any other test grade or your homework grade, then it will only count once and no other grade will be replaced. o Extra practice: Some of you already know that you need to do extra practice problems or get extra help in order to help you understand math topics. Try additional problems from the book (answers to odd-numbered questions are in the back of the book). When you access My Math Lab, you ll find an abundance of additional resources practice tests, hints on how to solve problems, extra practice problems, video instruction, and graphing calculator help. I also have created some instructional videos that will be posted on Moodle. Additionally, visit the tutors in the Math Center, or come see me during office hours. If your schedule does not allow you to visit me during office hours, make arrangements with me to come for extra help some other time. I am always willing to assist! After all, your success is my number one goal! More miscellaneous If you are unable to complete this class, please officially withdraw. Otherwise I am obligated to give you a grade of 0.0, which becomes part of your permanent record, including your G.P.A. The final day for withdrawing from this course is Friday, December 2, An incomplete will not be given in this course if you fail to come to class, fail to complete the work, or have a cumulative average below 60%. By college policy, in order to receive an incomplete, you must have completed at least 2/3 of the course work with a grade of at least 1.0, and the reason for not completing the course is beyond your control, such as an extended illness. Every time you are absent from class, you miss as much as half a chapter worth of instruction. It is not my job to re-teach the material to you when you return to class. Show me that you ve tried to learn the material on your own, then I ll be willing to offer extra assistance if you are having difficulties understanding the material you missed. Also note that sometimes I provide alternate solution methods that you won t find in the book, so if you miss class, you miss out on those strategies. In a nutshell, I can t emphasize enough the importance of attending all class sessions on time. I do understand that situations may occasionally arise that prevent you from attending class. Just remember that it your job to keep up to date with the material so that you don t fall behind. Answer keys to note sheets covered in class will be posted on Moodle. Print and review these as needed. Just another reminder to check Moodle and/or MML for announcements, grades, answer keys to notes covered in class, and answer keys to review sheets. 4 Cheating is a serious offense. Any use of unauthorized aids of any form or obtaining any help from another individual during tests is considered cheating. To knowingly provide help to another student in this situation is also deemed cheating. I encourage you to work together on homework questions. However, having someone else log onto your MML account and complete your homework is considered cheating. The first time cheating is observed, a grade of 0 will be given for that task. If a second incident takes place, a grade of 0.0 for the course will be recorded and a letter describing the action will be sent to the Vice President for Student and Instructional Support Services for inclusion in the permanent file(s) of the participant(s). 5 Thinking about that final grade? Here s how you can figure it out: 1. Add up all points from tests.. / In the ICA/Review Sheet category, drop the lowest two scores. Then add up the points you earned and divide by the points possible (these tasks have an initial value of 10 points each). Multiply that number by 100 / 100 Example: say we do 12 ICA s and 5 Review Sheets. That s 17 items (170 points), but the lowest two scores are excluded, so now the total is out of 150 points. You would add up your best 15 scores and divide by 150. (then multiply by 100 to convert to the number of points out of 100) 3. After your lowest four HW scores on MML have been dropped, log on to MML to look at your percent. That percent correlates to the number of points earned out of / 100 Example: 72.1% on MML homework gets recorded as 72.1 points out of Final Exam / 100 (Remember to also replace your lowest test score OR your homework score with your final exam score. IF your final exam is lower than any other test grade or your homework score, it only counts once and no grade is replaced.) TOTAL.. / 700 Here are the number of points needed to earn each letter grade: Points Earned Letter Grade 627 and higher (Less than 417 points earned results in a grade of 0.0) Confused? 7 Materials needed for this class: MyMathLab Access Code: Homework will be completed online using a program called MyMathLab (MML). You must purchase an access code to utilize this program. There are a few ways to obtain your code: Purchase your code online via MML s website: or at another site such as Amazon. Purchase a new (custom published) text from the KVCC bookstore..you ll see that a MML access code is packaged with the text. (Separate handouts will be provided that contain login instructions and details on how to use the features of the program. Directions will be included on how to utilize the program free for 17 days before purchasing your access code.) Math 116 Course Pack: available at KVCC s bookstore. Notebook to organize Course Pack and other papers. A 3-ring binder is most handy so you can easily take pages in and out. Graphing calculator (TI-83 or TI-84 recommended) If you don t have a graphing calculator, and this is the last class you ever need to take that requires one, you might want to try to buy a used one, or check into calculator rental ( for instance) NOTE: you will not be allowed to use your cell phone calculator during class. You must have a graphing calculator. Textbook: (This actually could be optional. Read below for details.) If you purchase a stand-alone MML code (see above), you have access to the complete textbook online (ebook). Therefore, you would not need to purchase a separate text. If you want a print copy of the text, your best option is to purchase a new text in KVCC s bookstore, as it is already bundled with the required MML code. If you buy the text and code separately, you ll spend quite a bit more money.
