THE EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH ON LEARNING AND INSTRUCTION (EARLI) & THE TUM SCHOOL OF EDUCATION announce the 15 th Biennial EARLI & JURE Conference in Munich, Germany Responsible Teaching and Sustainable Learning EARLI August 2013 JURE 26 & 27 August FIRST CALL - 1

Dear Colleagues, Welcome to the 15 th European Conference for Research on Learning and Instruction! The Technische Universität München and the TUM School of Education are proud to host the 2013 EARLI Conference. We are looking forward to welcoming you all in Munich and giving you a forum to share and discuss your research with an international research community. We all live in turbulent times in which the issues of responsibility and sustainability are being discussed in many domains. During the 2013 EARLI conference in Munich, we want to explore the meaning of these terms within in the fields of learning and instruction. Therefore, we hope to bring together ambitious researchers from across the world and provide them with a forum to engage in both formal and informal conversations, to establish new links and networks which hopefully may last far beyond the time of our conference! Indeed, the theme of the conference is Responsible Teaching and Sustainable Learning. This title focuses on elementary issues that educational researchers investigate. Besides, it picks up EARLI s twofold mission in researching learning and instruction and connects it to recent developments in educational research and practice. We understand responsible teaching with respect to multiple and challenging educational goals, like e.g. knowledge, social competence, social engagement or political awareness. Our vision is that responsible teachers aim at providing powerful, motivating and social learning environments. They do not only prepare learners for particular exams, but for being able to develop their character, being open minded and develop own ideas. In other words: We want to stress the responsibility of teachers to create learning environments which make sustainable learning likely. We think that the city and the Technische Universität München offer the optimal circumstances for an EARLI conference. For more information on the city of Munich and the 2013 EARLI conference, please visit We are looking forward to meeting all of you in Munich, the cosmopolitan city with a heart! Prof. Dr. Manfred Prenzel Conference President Dr. Martin Gartmeier Conference Manager 2

CONFERENCE VENUE AND SERVICES The EARLI 2013 conference will take place at the main campus of the Technische Universität München (TUM), Arcisstr. 21. The conference venue will allow for very short distances: The maximum walking time between two conference rooms will be about five minutes. Moreover, the TUM campus is very centrally located and is surrounded by many nice restaurants and coffee shops. It is situated close to Munich s central railway station and benefits from good public transport connections. During the 2013 EARLI conference, full catering ( lunch and coffeebreaks) will be available for all registered participants on site and free of charge. Beside wireless LAN-access, several computer rooms equipped with printers will be provided. As a special service for participants willing to attend the conference with children, we will offer an on-site child care service for kids between one and twelve years of age. This service will be made available in cooperation with the TUM Family Service. Two views of the TUM campus the conference venue 4

SOCIAL PROGRAMME The EARLI 2013 will feature a rich social programme which will give conference participants and accompanying persons many opportunities to get together, have fun and thereby build new relationships. The first highlight will be the Opening Reception on Tuesday evening. Don t miss this event where everybody is invited to grab a drink, find new friends and enjoy a (hopefully) warm summer night! Of course, Munich is especially famous for its beer well beyond both the city's and Germany's borders. Consequently, there are plenty of places to enjoy a nice drink - some of them magnificent! Our plan for 2013 is to hold the EARLI Conference Gala Dinner at a place in the very heart of Munich which will offer both a wonderful, festive atmosphere and a genuine glimpse into Bavarian culture. Be sure to get yourself a ticket in time for this great evening! Besides these two main events, Munich offers many opportunities for making your trip to the EARLI 2013 a great experience. Just to name the most proximate option: The conference venue is right in the middle of the Kunstareal Munich an area in which no less than 12 different museums are located in walking distance of the conference venue! The Königsplatz and the Pinakotheken are located right beside the conference venue 5

SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS The Scientific Programme Committee invites both empirical and theoretical proposals for symposia, paper presentations, posters, round tables, ICT demonstrations and workshops. The official language of the conference is English. Proposals should be submitted through the conference website ( Before submitting your proposal, we recommend that you read carefully the guidelines about the content of proposals and about the submission process. These guidelines will be available shortly on the website Please note that when using the online conference system to submit a proposal or register for the conference, you will require a valid EARLI username / password. To facilitate this, you will be able to obtain your username and password from the EARLI website at any time. You will also need to ensure that your address is updated in the EARLI database and that you will not be using multiple addresses when interacting with the on-line conference systems. Users, who do not already have an EARLI account, can register for a new account either from the EARLI website at any time prior to their submissions, or during their initial proposal submission / conference registration processes. If you are submitting a symposium or panel discussion, you will need to ensure that the address entered for each active participant (i.e. presenting authors, chairpersons, organisers, discussants) matches the address they have entered in the EARLI database. Consequently each active conference participant needs to have an EARLI account and have provided you with the corresponding address before the submission. The address will be used to retrieve the participants details from the EARLI database. For co-authors who will not be presenting a paper in the conference, a matching EARLI account address is not required. In order to retrieve your EARLI username / password, you can use the password reminder: If you have any questions or concerns about your EARLI login, please contact the EARLI office at info@earli.org. For questions about the EARLI 2013 conference, send an to: info@earli2013.org. SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS: 28 July October 2012 GENERAL REGULATIONS AND POLICIES You may not participate as a presenter in more than two sessions, and, in addition, you can act once as a chairperson of a symposium and once as a discussant (i.e. maximum four appearances). You may participate as a non-presenting co-author as many times as you like. PLEASE NOTE: The conference programme will avoid timetable conflicts for presenting authors, chairpersons and discussants, but not for co-authors! 8

CONFERENCE SESSION FORMATS It is important to read the guidance below carefully so that you select the appropriate format for your presentation. Selecting an inappropriate format may significantly reduce the chances of acceptance of your proposal! Each of the formats outlined below are equally valuable but serve different purposes. Symposia provide an opportunity to present research on one topic, often from multiple perspectives, providing a coherent set of papers for discussion. Symposia sessions are directed by a chairperson, involving four presenters and one discussant, from at least three different countries. We recommend that symposia conveners set an early deadline for possible contributors to submit to them and that each individual submission is checked for its own quality and its relevance and coherence to the topic of the symposium prior to formal submission to EARLI Please note that all active participants in a symposium need to have a valid EARLI id before the symposium is submitted! Timing: a symposium is scheduled for one and half hours, comprising 20 minutes presentation per speaker, ten minutes for the discussant, and 20 minutes for open discussion. Paper sessions are oral presentations of four papers, followed by a discussion with the audience. It is important that empirical papers have data and results, or they will not be accepted. Research that is at an earlier stage is very suitable for Round Table or Poster sessions. Theoretical papers, of course, are welcome. Timing: paper sessions are scheduled for one and a half hours, normally with four presenters, each with approximately 20 minutes for their presentation. Interactive poster sessions involve five or six posters, visually presenting research studies. A short oral presentation of about 5 minutes for each poster is given to an audience gathered as a group. After the authors brief presentation, an in-depth discussion between them and the audience follows. The poster sessions offer researchers the chance to present their work in a visual format and offer more opportunities for interaction and discussion. Timing: poster sessions are scheduled for one and a half hours, following the format above. Please bring posters in A0 or A1 format. Materials for fixing posters on the walls will be provided. Round table sessions offer opportunities for a more discursive exploration of research issues. This may well involve discussion of work in progress. The presenters explain their research and research issue, and invite the participants to help to discuss emerging data or to solve a research issue or problem. Round table sessions will take place in seminar rooms with a board-room style table. Five or six presenters will explain and discuss their research one after another. Timing: round table sessions are scheduled for one and a half hours. 9

ICT Demonstrations allow presenters to display, explain and familiarise users with a potentially useful teaching or research tool or method. The presentation may include references to completed research, but the point of the session is to demonstrate the tool, not present the research for criticism. The audience may offer their viewpoints and share their experiences with similar tools or different tools for the same purpose. Timing: demonstrations are scheduled for one and a half hours. Workshops provide an opportunity to familiarise participants with some aspect of research or teaching practice, so that questioning and discussion are suitably informed. Learning-by-doing occupies most of the session, and any presentations are brief. Adequate time for reflective discussion is important. Timing: workshops are scheduled for one and a half hours.
