1 Algebra 1 Course Expectations and Outline 1) Text: Larson Algebra 1 Common Core Edition Houghton Mifflin; Copyright ) Web Resource and online text: (You will be prompted for username and password.) Web-site: kevinjoyce@westonps.org The web-site should be utilized for current assignments and handouts, as well as useful links. If you miss a class, the web-site should be referenced for the current assignment, and the text web links or text book should be used for examples and self check quizzes. 3) Course Outline: You will receive an outline of topics covered and assignments which should serve only as a reference. The teacher s homepage will include links for current as well as prior assignments. 4) Homework: You can expect each lesson to be followed with a homework assignment to help practice and assess your understanding of the material. Homework will be checked/graded on a regular basis. If it is not done or given a valid attempt, you will receive a zero. Homework will be evaluated on completeness, neatness, quality of work and in-class corrections. Answers only will not be acceptable as homework assignments; you must show your work. Remember, homework, as well as class notes and web-sites, are your resources for studying for tests. 5) Grades: Your quarter grade for this course will be based on: 1) Quizzes, tests and other assessments (90%) A point system will be used to determine the value of each assessment. This will be evaluated during each quarter for equity among types of assessments. 2) Homework (10%)

2 Your Final Grade for the course will be determined by the weighted average of each quarter grade (20% each) and the departmental midterm and final examinations (10% each). 6) Student Responsibility: The responsibilities of each student include: a) prompt and regular attendance b) timely completion of assignments and makeup work c) positive and active classroom participation d) notifying the teacher in advance of anticipated absences, checking with classmates, the web-site, and the teacher after an absence and making arrangements for missed assignments. e) an unexcused absence on the day of a graded activity will result in a grade of a ZERO for that activity. 7) Extra Help: Extra help is always available before, during or after school. Please see me or any other math teacher in the Resource Center for an appointment. When you are having any difficulty, it is your responsibility to schedule extra help as soon as possible. DO NOT wait until the morning of a test to ask questions! The class and extra help schedules for all mathematics teachers are posted in the Mathematics Resource Center and in the classrooms. 8) Notes/ Notebooks: You will need to keep careful notes of class discussions and examples to help you in doing the homework assignments and preparing for tests. A well-organized, neat notebook will be a great asset for this and future mathematics courses. We recommend a three-ring loose leaf binder for this course alone. There will be supplementary worksheets. Date and label all notes and assignments; keep all materials in daily order for a continuous flow of concepts; and show all work neatly and completely when doing homework. 9) Calculators: The use of graphing calculators will be introduced early in the school year. They will be used in the exploration of concepts and serve as an aid in the problem solving process. The mathematics department strongly recommends that you own a graphing calculator. Classroom instruction will be based on using a TI-84 (83) Graphing Calculator. Graphing calculators will be made available by the Mathematics Department for use during your class period. You may also come to the resource center to use a calculator (if available) during unassigned time. 10) Attendance: Your prompt attendance to class is critical to your success as a student of mathematics and to the success of the class as a group. Unexcused tardiness or absence may result in lost credit for the day s assignment, and may also reduce the credit earned in the course. Even excused absences can have a negative effect on your mastery of this material. Please try to arrange appointments after school.
