These organizations may range from small entrepreneurships to the largest global corporations. The perspective of analysis will be comprehensive, synthesizing the various functional "silos" of the business discipline. The goal is to give students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired from both their work experience and the EMBA coursework to realistic business situations. COURSE PREREQUISITE Students must be in the final semester of the MBA program to be enrolled in this course. COURSE OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES As a result of this course students will: A. Demonstrate an understanding of the theory in the field of Strategic Management through the development & presentation of a 5 year strategic business plan including all principal elements provided in the business plan outline which is a part of this syllabus. 1

Demonstrate Critical Thinking Skills through the integration and application of the information gained in the various functional classes and outside research efforts via the development of the aforementioned 5 year strategic business plan and the writing and submission of a comprehensive integration paper in accordance with the assessment rubric in this syllabus. C. Develop a coordinated and comprehensive 5- year Strategic Plan and present it in a professional, informative, and interesting manner to a professional audience. Assessment will require the inclusion of the essentials found in the executive summary section of the business plan outline included in this syllabus. D. Demonstrate effective project management skills and the ability to work effectively in a team setting via the development and submission of a comprehensive Team Charter document that the team updates and follows in the development and presentation of its 5 year strategic business plan requirement and via team and class peer assessments at the end of term per the assessment forms provided and posted on Blackboard. Each individual should be able to speak knowingly about current events and how they relate to the theories and concepts studied in classes throughout the program. Students are highly encouraged to read current articles from quality business journals and magazines and other non- business media sources, including the following, but not limited to the following: Wall Street Journal Business Week Fortune Black Enterprise New York Times Fast Company Washington Post The Economist Listen to business and news broadcasts from one or more of the following sources: National Public Radio CNN C- SPAN Public Broadcast Service FOX News CNBC COURSE REQUIREMENTS A term project is designed to provide participants with an in- depth practical learning experience, focused on the interaction of an organization with its business environment. A Five- Year Strategic Business Plan project will require critical thinking skills, electronic library searches for scholarly source, and data collection and synthesis. The project is considered a comprehensive component of the MBA program because it requires you to recall information from previous MBA courses, and apply knowledge gained from a variety of disciplines including accounting, marketing, human resources, etc. It will require working effectively in a self- selected team of 4 to 5 members. Additionally, you will complete a team simulation project, which will require working effectively in an additional assigned team of 3 to 4 members. Team conflict must be resolved within the teams. There is a team member evaluation at the end of the class as a measure of accountability for team members. The evaluation counts 20% of the total grade for the class. For team members who are unwilling to work in harmony as productive contributors on the projects, members may unanimously decide to put a member 3

4 out of the team. This must be done no later than the last day to drop a class on the university schedule. More information will be provided in the first class meeting. Specifically, this course will utilize the following instruments/assignments to determine student grades and proficiency of the learning outcomes for the course: Individual Assignments - Strategic Management Quizzes Team Simulation Project Business Strategy Game Team Assignment - Strategic Business Plan Paper Team Assignment - Strategic Business Plan - Presentation Individual Assignment - Strategic Business Plan - Peer Evaluation A detailed explanation of each assignment is posted in Blackboard under Assignments. Please read, read, and read again all instructions, paying close attention to due dates and submission guidelines. Notice, there are multiple deliverables for some assignments. Failure to follow the instructions will result in point deductions and/or zero credit for the assignment. The assignments require the following student competencies: 1. Critical Thinking Skills and Problem Solving Skills: Student will acquire and synthesize relevant information and apply it in appropriate manner. Students will acquire information from several sources such as the textbook and outside materials, including relevant articles and cases. Interpret this information, organize it and maintain it in for easy access. Be able to communicate it effectively to others and be able to apply knowledge in problem solving. Systems Integration: Students are expected to understand complex interrelationships and be able to correlate information from the different functional areas of the business discipline. Proof of this ability will be determined from the feasibility and realism of the Environmental Analysis and the Strategic Plan. Innovativeness and creativity in determining ways to exploit core competencies will be expected. 4

5 3. The student must apply sound business analytical and decision- making tools in a team setting. GRADING Student evaluation is based on the assignments/activities listed below. There are additional documents on the course website that clarify the criteria for grading. The areas of evaluation are as follows: Assignment Point Value % of Grade Business Strategy Quizzes ( % of equal weight) Business Simulation Project % (Includes company performance [no adjustments for team scores below 50], BSG quizzes [2], and BSG team evaluation scores) Strategic Business Plan & % Presentation (Evaluated by Professor, Class, and Industry Judges) Bus. Plan Team Peer % Evaluation TOTAL % As team peer evaluations of the business plan effort constitute 20% of the grade, individuals should be fully engaged with a Business Plan team throughout the semester. Grades could be significantly impacted in a negative way by team evaluations. All students must be physically present to deliver the oral presentation. Students who do not show up for the presentation will receive a grade of zero (0) for the entire business plan. See the Attendance Policy on p No late assignments will be accepted, no exceptions. The following grading scale will be used and there will be no rounding or grade curves. For example, if your points add up to 899, you will receive a grade of B: 5

6 POINT VALUE points Below 600 GRADE A B C D F LEARNING METHODS The most effective way for adults to learn about management issues and develop related skills is through experiential learning. Accordingly, a major emphasis of this course will involve the development of a strategic plan, a group project that explores external and internal issues of an organization, and the formulation of appropriate strategies. This course will utilize a variety of instructional methods including lectures, parallel reading, research, intense group interaction, and audio/visual media presentations. There are no required online threaded discussions; however the discussion board will be used for questions and answers. Either the students or the professor may initiate a discussion pertaining to the course material such as current news that has the potential to impact the business environment as well as strategic plans in progress for the semester. Since this is the capstone course, the format is different than what you have experienced in your other graduate courses. You are expected to be more independent and self- paced, and the class does not meet as often. The majority of your time in this course will be spent performing scholarly research, working with a team, and preparing the term projects. Less emphasis will be placed on the traditional role of the student as a listener and a note- taker. The primary role of the instructor in this class is to guide you through the process. I will be available during office hours, by , phone, and in the discussion boards to assist you. I am also available to meet with students individually, or with a project team. COURSE POLICIES Academic Integrity: Honesty in completing assignments is essential to the mission of the university and to the development of the personal integrity of the student. Cheating, plagiarism, or other kinds of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will result in appropriate sanctions that may include failing an assignment, failing the class, or being suspended or expelled from the University. Suspected cases in this course may be reported to Student Life. The specific disciplinary process for academic dishonesty is found in the TWU Student Handbook. All written assignments must use appropriate APA format for citations, references, and other aspects of form and style. Significant point deductions will be applied when citations and formats do not conform to APA guidelines. Syllabus Subject to Change The data provided in this document is for information and planning only. The dates are subject to change based on the material covered and unexpected circumstances that require changing the schedule. Class Attendance I expect you will be in class on time...every time...for the entire time. I consider our class time to be a PRIORITY commitment. By agreeing to teach the course, I commit to being present for you. By registering for the class, you agree to be present, too. There are only 3 class sessions. You are expected to attend every class session. Attendance in class is considered a necessary factor in the learning process. This class only meets once at the beginning of the semester, then for presentations at the end of the semester. It is also important for students to arrive at class on time so activities will not be delayed or interrupted by late arrivals. Please know ahead of time that missed class time, regardless of the reason, is strongly discouraged and you will be penalized. 8

9 If you miss the face- to- face classes on 8/31/2016 or 9/1/2016, 20% will be deducted from your overall grade for the class. If you miss your final presentation, you will receive a zero (0) for the 5- Year Strategic Business Plan. If you are absent for the presentations of other teams, 20% will be deducted from your grade for the class. If you foresee that you cannot be present for 100% of the scheduled class meetings, I strongly encourage you to take this class in a future semester. Business Strategy and Policy, BUS 5893, is offered by the School of Management every semester, Fall, Spring, and Summer. To assist you in completing your business plan, there will be optional meetings and speakers throughout the semester. These will normally be scheduled on Tuesdays or Thursday nights beginning at 6:30 p.m. You will be informed of these through the class announcements on Blackboard at least one week in advance. Speakers and presenters volunteer their time to assist you. Your attendance would be appreciated. Internet and All students are expected to have access to the Internet and have TWU addresses. Note that you can contact other students in the class through Blackboard . BE SURE that you regularly check your TWU address or have it forwarded to your regular address. And be sure that the address for you that appears in Blackboard is your correct TWU address. If it is not correct, correct it immediately. You may send me an anytime that is convenient to you. I check my messages continuously during the day throughout the work- week (Monday through Friday). I try to respond as soon as possible on the same day. I will definitely respond to messages during the work- week by the close of business (5:00 pm) on the day following my receipt of them. s received on Friday will be responded to by the close of business on the following Monday. You must also include your Team Name in the body of the e- mail. Copy all team members on all e- mail correspondence about your business plan. Cell Phone Policy Classroom disruption by cell phones and paging devices is prohibited. A student facing the possibility of receiving emergency calls may leave the device on silent or vibrate mode during class if he/she has previously informed the professor. Otherwise, all cell phones and pagers must be turned off at the beginning of class. Routine work- related calls or personal calls from friends are not considered emergencies. Repeated violation of this policy is subject to dismissal or failure in the course. Electronic devices utilized in a learning context, such as laptops and language interpreters, may be permitted at the professor s discretion. A student may face a zero and/or failure in the class if an electronic device is used for cheating during a test. 9

10 Final Examination Policy There is no final examination in this class. Posting of Final Grades Each faculty member has the right to post or not post final course grades for each class to Blackboard. Final course grades provided to a student by a faculty member may not be relied upon as official. Students may access their official final grades online only via the Registrar s Office. According to FERPA, faculty may not provide final grade information to students via telephone, , posting or any other source, which might compromise student confidentiality. Student Responsibility As a professional, you are expected to come to class, and to come prepared. You are expected to read and thoughtfully study all assigned materials and complete all assignments. Always be ready to discuss the assigned materials. Ask questions to clarify any parts of the material that you do not understand. You are expected to participate in class appropriately. You are expected to turn in assignments on the dates scheduled. An EMBA program is your opportunity to learn how to better think, process information, write, and present. This requires work and a great deal of personal effort. I am always willing to help, but I cannot go through the process of struggling to learn for you. Please care enough about yourself to work hard in order to gain as much as you can from your classes. Late Assignments Late assignments may be accepted (very unusual), at the prerogative of the instructor, if there is a valid reason for the late submission (very rare). The student will be penalized 20% of the grade during the first week after the due date of the assignment if accepted. Assignments will not be accepted more than one week late, no exceptions. This applies to student mistakes in the assignment submission process as well. If you do not submit your assignment correctly, I will not receive it. Study Time/ Material Covered Most of TWU s EMBA classes are designed to take three times as much time OUTSIDE of class as they do in class. Remember that a large part of your learning experience depends upon your efforts, not just the efforts of the instructor. A typical student should plan about 10 hours of time outside class each week for each three- hour graduate class. Some classes will require more. Since this particular class does not meet as often, most of your time is spent in independent study and research, and working with your team. Academic Conduct Policy All assignments must be the student s own work. Papers completed for other courses are not considered original to this course and will be given a failing grade. If you have any question about potential conflicts among various course assignments, please ask the professor immediately. If unethical behavior is detected, the Instructor will take disciplinary steps 10

11 consistent with TWU departmental and University policy, including but not limited to receiving a 0% on the assignment, receiving a grade of F in the course, and or expulsion from the University. Plagiarism: DO YOUR OWN WORK. IF YOU USE SOMEONE ELSE'S IDEAS IN YOUR WRITTEN WORK, PLEASE REFERENCE IT ACCORDINGLY. Official definitions and policies pertaining to plagiarism are contained in the Student Handbook. Those definitions and TWU policies that exist at the time of any suspected plagiarism would apply. Academic Honesty All students are expected to be academically honest. Every effort will be made by your instructor and this department to discourage any type of cheating. This includes, but is not limited to, printing exam questions from Blackboard; sharing data with other students about exams; using unauthorized books, notes, or otherwise securing help in a proctored or online test; printing out and/or copying tests, assignments, reports, or term papers; collaborating, without authority, with another student during an exam or in preparing academic work; signing another student s name on an attendance sheet; or otherwise practicing scholastic dishonesty. Awareness of academic dishonesty by a classmate is considered the equivalent of cheating unless it is reported. Plagiarism refers to representing the work of another person as one s own and failing to use proper citations when using another person s work. Graduate students should know well what constitutes plagiarism. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT PLAGIARISM, YOU SHOULD WATCH THE FILM ONLINE AT THE TWU LIBRARY WEB SITE ENTITLED AVOIDING PLAGIARISM. THE WEB SITE IS Any student found guilty of cheating or plagiarism will (at a minimum) receive an F in the course and could be expelled from the University. If you copy something put it in quotes and cite the work in APA Format. To ensure the integrity of the academic process, Texas Woman s University vigorously affirms the importance of academic honesty as defined by the Student Handbook. Therefore, to detect and prevent plagiarism, faculty members at Texas Woman s University may now use a tool called Turnitin to compare a student s work with multiple sources. Turnitin reports a percentage of similarity to books, journals and all items available online and provides links to those specific sources. This tool does not determine whether or not a paper has been plagiarized. Instead, judgment will be made by the individual faculty member based upon the similarity of the data detected and the presence or absence of proper citations. All required assignments in this course may be checked for plagiarism using Turnitin. Because of the importance of management and potential harm to those who rely upon management decisions, there is no place for anything less than absolute integrity in business management. Acts of plagiarism or cheating of any kind in management classes taught by me will not be tolerated. Severe sanctions will be given to any student who does so, including but not limited to: a zero on a project or paper, an F in the class, academic probation and possible 11
