2 Effects of Independent Reading on Learners The amount of free reading done outside of school has consistently been found to relate to growth in vocabulary, reading comprehension, verbal fluency, and general information (Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding 1988; Greaney 1980; Guthrie and Greaney 1991; Taylor, Frye, and Maruyama 1990). Students who read independently become better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not (Krashen 1993; Cunningham and Stanovich 1991; Stanovich and Cunningham 1993). 15 English Electives Creative Writing ~ Scratchboard: This course is intended for students who would like to experiment with writing across genres in a variety of styles and forms. The course is intended for students of all levels, and every student can be successful. On a daily basis, students will engage with science fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, poetry, and personal narrative structures Journalism I ~ The Soaring Eagle Newspaper: This half year course is designed for students who are interested in contributing to the school s newspaper. Students in this class comprise the staff of the newspaper and are responsible for brainstorming ideas, generating articles and graphics, editing and revising their work and the work of others, and completing layout of the newspaper s pages Journalism II ~ Yearbook: This half-year course is designed for students who are interested in contributing to the creation of the yearbook. Students are responsible for the layout, editing and proofreading of the yearbook pages
