Franklin Wright Computer with internet access for completing some of the homework. This can be at home or in the computer lab (Room 110) Floppy Disk (or other media) for saving your access key for the software and the completed homework certifications Scientific Calculator (suggested) CATALOG DESCRIPTION This is a second course in Algebra for students who have completed one elementary Algebra course. The topics covered include polynomials, rational functions, linear equations and inequalities, absolute value inequalities, exponents and radicals, quadratic equations, relations and functions, systems of equations, and applications. This is a developmental course. PREREQUISITE MATH 095 within two years, satisfactory placement exam, or SAT/ACT score. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to: 1 Solve linear equations and inequalities, including those that involve absolute values. 2 Graph linear equations and inequalities, relations, and functions. 3 Solve systems of linear equations using a variety of techniques including the elimination method, the substitution method, Gaussian elimination, and Cramer s rule. 4 Solve systems of linear inequalities. 5 Identify numbers that belong to the different number sets: natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, real numbers, and complex numbers. 6 Perform operations with polynomials including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and factoring. 7 Simplify expressions with radicals and rational exponents. 8 Solve equations with radical expressions. 2 LEARNING OUTCOMES (continued) 9 Perform operations with complex numbers including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. 10 Solve quadratic equations and inequalities. 11 Solve a variety of applied problems involving linear, quadratic, rational, and polynomial expressions. 12 Calculate determinants. 13 Determine when a relation is a function. 14 Communicate mathematical concepts in writing. 15 Communicate mathematical concepts orally. HOMEWORK There are two components to homework in this class. Each section in the book has a corresponding certification component. I have identified certain sections in each chapter that will count toward your homework grade. However, I would suggest completing all of the certifications. In addition, there will be a separate written homework assignment for each Chapter. Due dates for both are noted at the end of the syllabus. The certifications are completed using the software that comes with your book. Most certifications consist of questions for which you must answer about 80% correct in order to pass. You may attempt this as many times as necessary. Full credit is given for certifications that are passed and turned in by the due date. I will accept certifications after the due date up until the exam covering that section. These certifications will receive 80% credit. For the written homework problems, you must write out or summarize the problem from the book as a starting point, show all work to arrive at the answer, and circle or underline the answer. Homework will be graded for the work to arrive at the answer as well as the answer itself. Answers only will not receive any credit. Homework is due at the beginning of class on the due date. I will accept late homework up until the exam covering that chapter. Late homework will be penalized 20%. EXAMS There will be 3 regular exams, each covering about 2 chapters of material, and a comprehensive final exam. Exams are for the full period. There will be no presentation after exams. Tentative exam dates are noted on the schedule. If you know you will miss an exam, you must schedule a makeup time with me prior to the exam. Syllabus Math 096 W02 Fall 2006 Page 2 of 5

3 GRADING Your grade depends on the points you achieve on the assessments: certifications, written homework, and exams. The certifications are worth 20% of your final grade, written homework 10%, each regular exam 15%, and the final exam 25%. The set standard for grades is as follows: % A 73 76% C 90 92% A 70 72% C 87 89% B % D % B 63 63% D 80 82% B 60 62% D 77 79% C+ 0 59% F You can check your grade at any point in the class by either choosing the Progress Report option from the software or at the website MISSING CLASS Note that the schedule on the following page of the syllabus is subject to change. We will attempt to keep to this schedule, but, we may at times be ahead or behind. This could change the due dates for certifications, written homework assignments, or dates of exams. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what was covered, and, if any dates have changed. Not knowing about an exam is not a valid reason for rescheduling an exam. Note also that you may be dropped from the course if you miss 4 or more classes. COMPUTER SOFTWARE/LEARNING MATH You'll need access to a computer with Windows 95 or newer in order to do the certifications for each section in the book. The necessary software comes on CD with the book. You can install this on a PC at home. It is also loaded on computers in the computer lab in Room 110. This software is an excellent tool for learning and practicing the concepts in this class. There are unlimited practice problems and you can even create and take your own practice tests. I encourage you to take advantage of these features. You should also try to keep up with the certifications as we cover the material in class. I would also strongly recommend you save the certifications on a floppy disk or other media. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES GBC supports providing equal access for students with disabilities.
