1 KS3 English Long Plan from September 2015 Year 7: Middle English: Chaucer, Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Students will study a collection of medieval literature as a foundation to the study of English. Reading assessment: related to the topic. Writing assessment: creative writing : A project on Chivalry in the Middle Ages Poetry: Seamus Heaney and Gillian Clarke s Poems Students will study a collection of poems from the two famous poets as well as some older 19 th century poems. Reading assessment: Students will be asked to analyse a Heaney poem that they will study beforehand. Writing assessment: students will write a descriptive story based on line from one of the poems. : Students have to write their own poem and then present the poem to the class. Drama: Our Day Out Students will study the play Our Day Out by Willy Russell. Reading assessment: Students will be assessed on how the writer presents a character Writing assessment: Students will be asked to write as if they are one of the characters in the play Homework: half term project and speaking and listening assessment: student will produce a project where they have to design a school of the future Novel: The Hound of the Baskervilles Students will study this Sherlock Holmes mystery as an introduction to 19 th century literature. Reading: Students will be asked to write about how the writer presents a theme in the novel. Writing: Students will write to persuade Homework: half term project and speaking and listening assessment: students will produce a file about the work of Sherlock Holmes. Shakespeare: Hamlet Students will study a Shakespeare s Hamlet, with focus on particular extracts Reading assessment: Students will analyse how Shakespeare presents a character in Hamlet. Writing assessment: Students will write a dramatic monologue based on one of the characters. Homework: half term project and speaking and listening assessment: students will produce a project about Shakespeare and the Globe Theatre Students will continue with the study of Shakespeare s Hamlet and then study a non-fiction unit when the : End of year baseline assessment in reading, writing and speaking and listening

2 Year 8: Gothic Unit Students will study a range of gothic fiction Reading: Students will look at a particular extract and write about how the writer structures it to create tension and atmosphere. Writing: Students will write to explain Homework: half term project and speaking and listening assessment students will produce a gothic story for children and illustrate it. Poetry poems from other cultures Students will study a collection of poems written by poets from other cultures and traditions. This aims to build on the skills they learned in year 7 when studying poetry. Reading: Students will look at two poems and write about the poets attitudes to their cultures in the poems. Writing: Students will produce a descriptive piece of writing Homework: half term project and speaking and listening assessment students will research a particular culture or tradition from a prescribed list. Drama: The Crucible Students will study the play by Arthur Miller: a more difficult play than the one studied in year 7, developed to challenge thinking and build on what they already know. Reading: Students will write about how the writer presents a character in the play. Writing: Students will write as if they are a character in the play. students will produce a brochure article about witchcraft. Novel: Oliver Twist Students will study the novel by Charles Dickens, building on the work they did in year 7 when studying The Hound of Baskervilles Reading: Students will write about how Dickens presents a theme in the novel. Writing: Students will write to persuade Homework: half term project and speaking and listening assessment students will produce a leaflet aimed at giving information to young people about staying safe. Shakespeare: Othello Students will study the Shakespeare play, building on skills gained in year 7 and compare two extracts. Reading: Students will look at how Shakespeare presents a character through two key speeches. Writing: Students will write a dramatic monologue in the style of a soliloquy students are to produce a project on heroes and villains. Students will continue with the study of Shakespeare s Othello and then study a non-fiction unit when the : End of year baseline assessment in reading, writing and speaking and listening

3 Year 9: Writers viewpoints and perspectives Students will study non-fiction and fiction texts based on a topic. Reading: Students will sit a GCSE style reading test Writing: Writing to describe Poetry Conflict Poems Students will study a range of poems about power and conflict in preparation for GCSE English Literature Reading: Students will compare how poets show the theme of conflict or power in two poems. Writing: writing to describe Drama An Inspector Calls Students will build on their knowledge about drama to study this GCSE text. Reading: Students will compare how the writer presents two characters Writing: Students will write to present a viewpoint Novel Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Students will build on skills gained in years 7&8 to study a challenging GCSE text Reading: Students will write about how the writer presents a theme in the novel. Writing: Students will write to argue Shakespeare: Macbeth Students will study the Shakespeare play, building on skills gained in year 7&8 and compare two extracts. Reading: Students will look at how Shakespeare presents a character through two key speeches. Writing: Students will write a dramatic monologue in the style of a soliloquy students are to produce a project Students will continue with the study of Shakespeare s Othello and then study a non-fiction unit when the : End of year baseline assessment in reading, writing and speaking and listening

Writing: Students will write to argue Writers viewpoints and perspectives Students will study non-fiction and fiction texts based on a topic. 5 Year 11: Students studying this course are the final cohort to sit this exam.
