1 New Braunfels ISD Career & Technical Education The NBISD Career & Technical Education program prepares students to excel in the planning and development of future career opportunities. Career and technical education instruction provides content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills for students to further their education and succeed in current or emerging professions. NBISD will develop quality instructional collaborations with business and industry partners to prepare students for post-secondary education and a globally competitive workforce.

2 NBISD CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION The New Braunfels ISD Career & Technical Education Department offers opportunities for students at the middle school and high school levels to access more than 100 different courses that help prepare them for occupations and further study. Courses are arranged in occupational clusters so students can identify the cluster that matches their interests and career goals. Middle School High School Alamo Academies **Students can also earn college credits by signing up for dual credit or locally Advanced Technical Credit courses.

3 NBISD Career & Technical Education Middle School Offerings Investigating Careers is recommended for students in Grades 7-8. Career and Technical Education instruction provides content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills for students to further their education and succeed in current or emerging professions. Career development is a lifelong pursuit of answers to the questions: Who am I? Why am I here? What am I meant to do with my life? It is vital that students have a clear sense of direction for their career choice. Career planning is a critical step and is essential to success. The goal of this course is to create a foundation for success in high school, future studies, and careers such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; Business and Industry; Public Service; Arts and Humanities; and Multidisciplinary Studies. The students research labor market information, learn job-seeking skills, and create documents required for employment. Students are encouraged to participate in extended learning experiences such as career and technical student organizations and other leadership or extracurricular organizations.

4 NBISD Career Cluster Crosswalk for Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources The people who work in the Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources cluster include farmers and ranchers tending Texas crops and livestock; utility operators providing oil, electricity, and natural gas; and conservationists protecting wilderness and wildlife. They put food on our tables and turn raw materials into products we all use. To prepare for careers in agriculture, food, and natural resources, students must attain academic skills and knowledge in agriculture. To prepare for success, students need opportunities to learn, reinforce, experience, apply, and transfer their knowledge and skills in a variety of settings. This course will satisfy the speech requirement for graduation. Wildlife, Fisheries, and Ecology Management (One credit) This course is recommended for students in Grades Wildlife, Fisheries, and Ecology Management examines the management of game and non-game wildlife species, fish, and aquacrops and their ecological needs as related to current agricultural practices. To prepare for careers in natural resource systems, students must attain academic skills and knowledge, acquire technical knowledge and skills related to natural resources, and develop knowledge and skills regarding career opportunities, entry requirements, and industry expectations. Through the analysis of artistic floral styles and historical periods, students will develop respect for the traditions and contributions of diverse cultures. Students will respond to and analyze floral designs, thus contributing to the development of lifelong skills of making informed judgments and evaluations. To prepare for careers in floral design, students must attain academic skills and knowledge, acquire technical knowledge and skills related to horticultural systems, and develop knowledge and skills regarding career opportunities, entry requirements, and industry expectations. Students should know how plant and soil science has influenced a vast body of knowledge, that there are still applications to be discovered, and that plant and soil science is the basis for many other fields of science. To prepare for careers in plant and soil science, students must attain academic skills and knowledge, acquire technical knowledge and skills related to plant and soil science and the workplace, and develop knowledge and skills regarding career opportunities, entry requirements, and industry expectations. Practicum in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources is designed to give students supervised practical application of knowledge and skills. Practicum experiences can occur in a variety of locations appropriate to the nature and level of experiences such as employment, independent study, internships, assistantships, mentorships, or laboratories. 8 NBISD Career Cluster Crosswalk for Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources Advanced Technical Credit Courses Available at NBISD ATC gives high school students a chance to receive credit at participating community colleges across Texas for taking high school technical courses. Approved courses and their college equivalent are listed in the ATC Course Crosswalk. The participating colleges have agreed to offer students credit for these courses, provided the college offers the course and the student meets certain criteria. The teacher of the course must meet the ATC teacher requirements, go through ATC training and teach a course enhanced to meet the content of the equivalent college course. Students can also earn Performance Acknowledgments if they meet certain requirements. Please note that not all community colleges participate fully in ATC, but it is the student s responsibility to request credit upon registration at the college.
