(Look at the context the sentence the word appears in and choose the meaning that makes the most sense in the sentence.) Dictionary Skills How can you find out how to pronounce a word correctly? (Look in a dictionary. Dictionary entries include a pronunciation key.) STUDENT OBJECTIVES Practice test-taking strategies: making an educated guess. Demonstrate understanding of text selections, vocabulary, and skills. Practice on-demand writing by responding to a short answer prompt. Teach Test-Taking Strategies: Making an Educated Guess Teach/Model Explain that good test-takers don t always know the right answer. They sometimes need to make educated guesses. When you take a multiple-choice test, there s a difference between random guessing and making an educated guess. Discuss the first thing that students should do when they get to a set of multiple-choice answers. Read all of the answer choices. Even if you think the first one is right, read the rest of them, too. Explain how to eliminate answers. Cross out answers that you know are wrong. Getting rid of wrong answers improves your chances of picking the right one. Present strategies for choosing the remaining answers. Read the answers that remain. Then reread or skim the text to help you choose your answer. Practice/Apply Ask students to explain how they can make an educated guess to answer Question 1. (Read all of the answers. Explain to students that they should refer back to the readings on pages to find details and examples as they complete the Short Answer question. Write Allow students 10 minutes to complete this section. Explain that this is good practice for on-demand writing tests. Review and Check Multiple Choice Call on students to explain how they arrived at their answers. Ask them which questions required them to go back to the text to find the answers. Ask students to evaluate their errors, explaining why they think they made each mistake. Encourage them to suggest how they might avoid similar errors on future tests. Short Answer Review students answers to the Short Answer prompt, asking several students to read their first sentence and compare ways they restated the prompt. Call on students to share the supporting details they gave for how surveillance technology will affect our society.
