3 OUR PROGRAMME Please note that: We deliver our Education Programme in a variety of ways including Tours, Talks and Workshops to meet the learning needs of your students. We offer packages within 6 subjects that apply to student ages from Pre-School to University level of study. Our programme has been created by working in collaboration with experienced teachers. If packages are applicable to more than one key stage group, this suggest they can be aligned to your pupils learning needs and the curriculum. Content within each package can be tailored to your pupils learning needs after a provisional booking has been made. Please contact education@warwick-castle.com to organise this with our Education Team. The Castle Dungeons is not part of our Education offering but is available to book from per student (including Castle entry). It is recommend for students over 10 only. A minimum of 2 teachers / leaders need to be present throughout the entire 45 minute experience.

7 MEET THE MONARCHY National Curriculum Links: 1a) Pupils should be taught about events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally. (KS1) The Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest, The six wives of Henry 8, the Civil wars. 1b) Pupils should be taught about the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. (KS1) William 1 st, Henry 8, Charles 1st, Queen Victoria 1c) Pupils should be taught about significant historical events, people and places in their own locality. William 1st and Norman Conquest Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Gain a fundamental understanding of a chronological framework from when significant individuals ruled, from William 1st to Queen Victoria. Be introduced to famous Kings & Queens which will allow pupils to interpret what they looked like, and the famous characteristics they possessed. Understand the basic events and combatants at the Battle of Hastings. 2

9 ATTACK & DEFENCE National Curriculum Links: 1a) A study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils chronological knowledge beyond (KS2) 1b) a local history study (KS2-3) 1c) The development of Church, state and society in Medieval Britain (KS3) Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Understand how Castles have developed and changed over time. Have a clear understanding and chronological knowledge of significant wars and of the people that battled in them. Understand how Warwick Castle has protected itself during significant wars. This tour is a specific general defence of Warwick castle. 4
10 CASTLE LIFE History & Design Technology Key Stage / Age Group: 1 2 (5-7 yrs.) Duration: 30 minutes Cost: 2.50 per student Subject: History 5
11 CASTLE LIFE Description: Castle Life will explore the social and cultural life of the medieval period in particular relating to the preparations for battle in the War of the Roses. The History Team will teach the group about those working for the Kingmaker including a blacksmith, seamstresses, and a treasurer, and their role in preparing for the Wars of the Roses. Curriculum links: Pupils should be taught about: the development of state and society in Medieval Britain e.g. the War of the Roses a study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils chronological knowledge beyond 1066 e.g. changes in aspects of social history events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally After the tour, pupils will: Learn about the life and culture back in 1471 during the court of Warwick the Kingmaker. Have a beginners understanding of the characteristics of the Kingmaker, and how he influenced and supported the monarch. Learn about significant wars and battles that occurred during this time, including how Warwick Castle was involved during these events. 6

13 THE KINGMAKER National Curriculum Links: the development of Church, state and society in Medieval Britain : the Wars of the Roses a local history study Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Learn about the life and culture back in 1471 during the court of Warwick the Kingmaker. Have a strong understanding of the characteristics of the Kingmaker, and how he influenced and supported the monarch. Learn about significant wars and battles that occurred during this time, including how Warwick Castle was involved during these events. 8

15 POWER OF THE MONARCHY National Curriculum Links: 1a) a study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils chronological knowledge beyond 1066.(KS2). 1b) a study over time tracing how several aspects of national history are reflected in the locality.(ks2). 1c) a study of an aspect of history or a site dating from a period beyond 1066 that is significant in the locality. (KS2) 1d) the English Reformation and Counter-Reformation (Henry VIII to Mary I) (KS3) Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Be able to discuss the differences in the level of power between various monarchs using case studies, from William the Conqueror to Queen Victoria I. Have a clear understanding of how Warwick Castle has changed and developed throughout the reign of significant monarchs. Learn how and why particular monarchs rose and fell during their reign of England and there lasting influence. Have an understanding of the reformation. 10

17 CRIME & PUNISHMENT National Curriculum Links: 1a) History: Pupils should be taught about changes in an aspect of social history, such as crime & punishment from Anglo-Saxons to the present (KS2). 1b) Citizenship: Pupils should be taught about the nature of rules and laws and the justice system, how rules and laws are made and enforced, and why different rules are needed in different situations (KS2) 1c) Citizenship: Pupils should be taught about the precious liberties enjoyed by the citizens of the United Kingdom. (KS2). 1d) History: Pupils should be taught about the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare different periods. Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Recognise why we have laws, rules and a justice system in place, and how it has changed over significant times in history. Gain a good understanding to how criminals were tried, and how the guilty would have met a grisly end compared to the modern day penalties. Have extended knowledge of significant individuals and criminals that have stayed at Warwick Castle during different periods of time, reigns of monarchs and laws of Parliaments. 12

19 ULTIMATE CASTLE TOUR National Curriculum Links: 1a) a study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils chronological knowledge beyond 1066.(KS2). 1b) a study over time tracing how several aspects of national history are reflected in the locality.(ks2). 1c) a study of an aspect of history or a site dating from a period beyond 1066 that is significant in the locality. (KS2) 1d) Pupils should be taught to develop a sense of period through describing and analysing the relationships between the characteristic features of periods and societies. (KS4). 1e) Pupils should be analysing and explaining the reasons for, and results of, historical events, situations and changes. (KS4). 1f) Pupils should be considering the significance of events, people and developments in their historical context and in the present day. (KS4) Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: This tour will explore the castle s history by presenting key facts and figures in a chronological manner. It aims to provide a general understanding of the changes to the castle over time and introduces some of the castle s most important owners. 14

21 TREBUCHET TALK History & Design Technology Available from Feb Half term November only Key Stage / Age Group: 1-4 (5-16yrs.) Duration: 20 minutes Cost: 2 per student Subject: History & Design Technology 15
22 TREBUCHET TALK National Curriculum Links: 1a) Pupil should be able to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific discipline of physics. 1b) Pupil should be able to identify effects of air resistance and frictions that act between moving surfaces. 1c) Pupil should be able to how to measure forces and identify the direction in which they act. 1d) Pupil should be able to recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears allow smaller force to have a greater effect. 1e) Pupil should be able to explain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object. Intended learning outcomes: After the workshop, pupils will: Use our medieval weapons of war as a case study to learn how some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears allow smaller force to have a greater effect. Identify the forces such as gravity and air resistance that comes into play when using various mechanisms. Learn why and how the Trebuchet s design was successful in war due to its clever design that utilizes certain forces of physics. 16
23 MARKETING & BUSINESS Business Studies, Marketing, Leisure Key Stage / Age Group: 3+ (11+ yrs.) Duration: 30 minutes Cost: 2 per student Subject: Marketing and Business Studies. Leisure Tourism. Real-life business. Relevant add-ons None 17
24 MARKETING & BUSINESS Pupils will: Explore the activities of business and the reasons for success or failure. Be introduced into the 4 P s of marketing and how they can be put into action within a business. Learn to understand how Warwick Castle target their customers and align their product offering to meet their needs. Be introduced and develop a wider knowledge to marketing within the context of a business. Consideration is given to the role of information technology and digital channels in marketing. Develop a clear understanding of operational decisions in managing a business and running an event. It explores how operations management can help a business to be more effective, and the role technology can play in this process. Learn to understand the job role and responsibilities of various departments within a business. Review Warwick Castle in a case study approach and generate their own recommendations on how they can become a more successful business. Using Warwick Castle (and Merlin Entertainments) as a real life business example; this presentation will provide an introduction into: Starting a business Marketing a business People in business Operations inside a business Case Study Questions and Q&A. 18

26 BUSINESS & EVENTS Pupils will: Learn about Warwick Castle as a business part of Merlin Entertainments Learn how Warwick Castle align events to meet the needs of their target customers. Learn to understand the job role and responsibilities of various departments within a business. Explore the variety of events that take place at Warwick Castle and understand how to combat issues within operations on the day. Develop a clear understanding of operational decisions in managing a business and running an event. It explores how operations management can help a business to be more effective, and the role technology can play in this process. Be introduced into the 4 P s of marketing and how they can be put into action within an event. Interactive answering questions during Q&A session at the end of the talk. Using Warwick Castle (and Merlin Entertainments) as a real life business example; this presentation will provide an introduction into: Merlin Entertainments as a business: Vision & Strategy Setting up an event Focus on Warwick Castle events: People within the business; Operation considerations Case Study Questions and Q&A. 20

31 SWORDS & SHIELDS National Curriculum Links: KS2 - Pupils should use materials and processes used in making art, craft and design. KS2 - play competitive games, modified where appropriate, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending KS2 develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance KS3 - use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games KS3 - develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports. Cross reference to History & Art & Design: Battle formations used in War. Referencing famous battle and wars. KS2 Optional shield creating activity to take away with them for the classroom (aimed at KS2) Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Learn the art of sword fighting and different techniques that were used in history from Warwick Castle Swordsman.
