C&I or Telephone: (325) Course Description Course Prefix/Number: ENG2326 Course Title: Readings in American Literature Brief Course Description: A study of diverse works by American writers with an emphasis on reading, comprehending, and thinking critically about the selected works within the context of American cultural and literary history. English 2326 Syllabus Readings in American Literature Student Learning Outcomes Upon completing this course, you should: understand the role of American literature as an expression of national values and an interpretation of the American experience: understand the interaction among American history, culture, and literature; understand the scope and variety of American literature, including its various forms; understand and be able to explain the function of American literature as a definer of national identity and an index of American values; be able to define the terms neo-classicism, romanticism, realism, naturalism, modernism and post-modernism and other terms related to genre study and literary analysis; understand and apply basic methods of literary analysis. 2 You will also choose one additional novel to coincide with the theme of this course. This will be discussed on the first class day. Students will produce written analyses of individual literary works and take essay examinations that are graded in terms of both content development and clarity of expression following widely accepted generic conventions. By engaging with locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally known literary artists and the texts they create, students are introduced to the shared traditions of literary expression, the debates that help shape the literature, and the conflicts, cultural differences, and shared experiences involved in the forging of human culture in all its diversity. to lectures, taking notes, participating in to lectures, taking notes, participating in Personal Responsibility PR1: Demonstrate the ability to evaluate choices, actions and consequences as related o ethical decision-making. 3 Therefore, it is your responsibility to turn in any and all work before you expect to be gone. The only exception will be in the case of medical emergency, and a doctor s note must be provided. This means football, basketball, baseball, softball games, band competitions, UIL activities, track meets, FFA events, and all other extracurricular activities do NOT excuse you from homework or due dates. You have a schedule. Make note of assignment due dates on your personal schedule. Electronic malfunction will not be an excuse for late work. DO NOT wait until the last possible second to submit an assignment. If you have a problem with Blackboard, you should immediately me with your assignment attached. Make sure that it gets turned in some way. Blackboard This course operates with the Blackboard website, where you will find important announcements, the TurnItIn dropbox for submission of papers, assignment prompts and guidelines, and handouts. You will find the Blackboard site at You should check the site often to stay abreast of assignments, changes to the syllabus and announcements. Academic Honesty and Plagiarism Goldthwaite CISD and Angelo State University expects you to maintain complete honesty and integrity in your academic pursuits. This includes avoiding plagiarism. Plagiarism is defined as using ideas and information from other sources without give appropriate credit to the original sources. Plagiarism includes taking information from people you do not know (the Internet) and from people you do know (your friends). Study groups are permissible but only if each student turns in an original document of their own. If you are caught plagiarizing, intentionally or not, you will receive a zero on the assignment, and you could possibly receive a failing grade in the course. Additional discipline could involve letters being placed in your permanent file and action taken by Angelo State University resulting in possible suspension or expulsion. Grading Reading Response Questions 40% Midterm Rough Draft 10% American Identity Outline/Draft 10% Midterm Literary Analysis Essay 20% American Identity Final Essay 20% Overall guiding questions: Focus on the the theme of an American identity. Is there an American identity? Or is the American identity the creation of a few early-nineteenth-century dreamers? You will use all content covered from the anthology as well as the novel of your choice to explain your response in a final persuasive literary analysis. See rubric. Midterm Essay/American Identity Outline/Draft: You will create an Alphanumeric Outline for your midterm/final essays. See an example at the following link: You will submit a draft of your essays through Blackboard s TurnitIn. 3

4 Midterm Essay: The midterm essay will be over the literary device of symbolism and how it is used in the assigned novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. Reading Response Questions: You can expect at least two discussion or reading response questions per author. These will be in the form of short answer responses and text evidence is expected to validate your opinion/stance. Insightful responses are expected. You may type your responses in Word and submit through , or through a Google Doc and share it with me, by the due date. See Rubric.
