1 Leadership Programs for Clergy by Tom Krapu, PhD, ACC Clergy are presented with unique demands and circumstances that shape and influence them as leaders. Seminary prepares clergy theologically, but only begins the process of leadership development. Because leadership is a life long process, leadership skills need continual development from early seminary formation through advanced (senior) clerical service. In addition, with the reduced number of clergy and the increase in lay ministers and volunteers, clergy need to learn to manage their time, enhance their effectiveness and (positively) develop others as leaders. Developments within the field of professional executive and leadership coaching have resulted in powerful technologies to enhance and accelerate the development of leaders. Tom Krapu s work in the area of leadership coaching has a proven track record of inspiring leadership and helping individuals identify general as well as specific leadership goals. Unlike other leadership programs that provide a standard curriculum, Tom s Leadership Programs for Clergy are designed for each individual from the very start. In addition, the implementation of each individual s program is central to their development and includes support and accountability to help them achieve their goals. Drawing as necessary from both individual and group coaching services, Tom has designed powerful, yet cost effective leadership development programs. The Ongoing Formation Leadership Telecourse (OFLT) The Ongoing Formation Leadership Telecourse (OFLT) is one of the leadership development programs that Tom Krapu, PhD offers as a part of his professional coaching services. The OFLT consists of an integration of group and individual coaching services. Delivered over a seven to nine week period, participants more deeply develop themselves as leaders through five group coaching teleconference meetings and four individual coaching sessions. The individualized sessions are strategically timed to maximize participant learning and transfer of learning to individualized leadership goals. Self-assessment, including a customized 360 feedback

2 survey, is an integral part of the telecourse. In addition the highly acclaimed book, Leadership and Self Deception (link) is integrated into the course. This course incorporates homework each week focusing on developing greater awareness and applying course materials to personal goals and objectives for the course. What you can expect from the Ongoing Formation Leadership Program? Increased leadership awareness. Identification of specific leadership strengths. A deepened understanding of styles of managing conflict Greater clarity of one s own specific tendencies regarding conflict. Self-awareness in areas essential to effective ministry (also can be customized to the unique demands of religious congregations). An understanding of different levels of organizational effectiveness. A fundamental knowledge of how to inspire others to the highest levels of effectiveness. Awareness of how essential a people focus is to accomplish significant and lasting organizational results. Each participant in The Ongoing Formation Leadership Program creates: Personalized goals that are set by each course participant and are both general and specific (time limited). A personalized one to three year development plan. The participant creates this and when appropriate shares it with an office of personnel, creating a partnership with higher level Church leaders or their office of personnel. The OFLT universal leadership content can be individualized to a variety of populations including: Priests or ministers who are practicing ministry prior to their first placement as a pastor. Established pastors. Specific high potential individuals who are identified specifically as future, potential leaders. Clergy in higher leadership positions. With the utilization of a telecourse format, participants can come from a geographically diverse area and brought together for a powerful, group coaching process with minimal travel expenses in terms of time and cost. Past participants have been impressed at what can be accomplished within a group and individual coaching program delivered exclusively over the phone (See past course evaluation summary).

3 Customized 360 feedback: Each telecourse participant engages in a 360 feedback process. The customized 360 survey obtains feedback from every direction in a pastor s life including staff, parishioners, advisory council members and peers. These sources of feedback are compared to the participant s own self-evaluation. Feedback is provided in the following areas: Liturgical Provider Preacher Teacher Leader And Facilitator Community Leader Parish Administrator Personnel Administrator Organizer And Administrator Team Player Developer Of People A sample 360 feedback report can be viewed by request, please me for a copy: tkrapu@krapu4.com What participants are saying about the OFLT Telecourse: Not the "same old" early ministry educational program. The topics/results covered are immanently useful - i.e., I can use them the day we chat. This course really helps you to be the kind of leader Jesus was. If Jesus ever had to do all of the administration stuff clergy have to do today he would teach the principles and ideas of this course. As clergy, we "have no choice" but to be leaders - in some way or another. The course recognizes that we are not all equally gifted in this regard, but it also reveals that we are certainly all capable of leadership. I also found that there was a solid foundation insofar as our faith was concerned. Tom had a very good understanding of the ecclesial aspect of our roles as leaders - even if the concepts introduced or covered were not specifically ecclesial. Thank you for your insights into my development as a leader. The book was wonderful and one that I think every parish staff should read and discuss. I feel this course almost needs to be mandatory for all pastors. It really opened my eyes up to a lot of things.

4 A more detailed summary of past course evaluations can be viewed at: The Ongoing Formation Leadership Telecourse and customized 360 survey for clergy has also been discussed by Joseph Ryan in The Catholic Review, March 9th, The Individualized 360 Leadership Program (360LP) The Individualized 360 Leadership Program (360LP) is a specialized individual coaching program to help leaders perform a self-assessment and develop a specific leadership program without a group coaching process. Utilizing the same customized 360 instrument used in the Ongoing Formation Leadership Telecourse (OFLT) individuals gain specific and relevant feedback about themselves as it relates to their ministry and develop a leadership development plan from that feedback. Integrated with individual leadership coaching sessions, the 360LP is designed for individuals to develop and then implement an individualized leadership program. Individualized Leadership Coaching An individualized leadership coaching program is often helpful to individual's who want to further develop their leadership potential. This can include individuals who: Have completed an Ongoing Formation Leadership Telecourse (OFLT) OR Have completed the Individualized 360 Leadership Program (360LP) OR Are interested in a separate, individualized leadership program. About Tom Krapu, PhD, ACC Tom Krapu lives in St. Louis, Missouri with his wife Kathy and two sons, Daniel (9) and Benjamin (8). He attends St. Catherine Laboure Parish (link), which is a parish that is ministered to by the Midwest Province of the Congregation of the Mission (The Vincentians). He and his wife Kathy are active in the ACTS retreat movement (link) here in St. Louis. In fact, Tom has been a retreatant, team member and then codirected a June 2006 men s retreat for their parish.

5 Tom has worked with parish priests, priests from religious congregations, and religious brothers, from all over the United States, Europe, the Philippines, and Africa. This work has included individual and group work related to the psychological components of their ongoing formation and sometimes the discernment of their vocation. The priests he works with are usually also working closely with a spiritual director. Tom has been blessed to share the journey of many men who have been called to the clerical life. Tom s original training, as a counseling psychologist, taught him a developmental approach when working with people. He offers coaching services (link) in a broad number of areas including clergy.
