Kevin Cffee Curse Descriptin Students will learn t recgnize the imprtance f the First Amendment, define the prcess f sending and delivering messages, scrutinize feedback, and analyze audiences. In additin, they will research, rganize and prepare speeches that are fcused, detailed, and cite attributin, utilizing utlines fr delivery. Attentin will be paid t relaxatin exercises, eye cntact, bdy language, pdium presence, the pause, articulatin, vice prjectin and pacing. The rle f the listener will be examined, as will selfevaluatin. Infrmative, persuasive and argumentative speeches will be taught. Institutinal Student Learning Outcmes A. Critical Thinking: Analyze prblems by differentiating fact frm pinins, using evidence, and using sund reasning t specify multiple slutins and their cnsequences. In frmal speeches and class discussins, analyze ideas. B. Cmmunicatin: Effectively cmmunicate thught in a well-rganized manner t persuade, infrm, and cnvey ideas in academic, wrk, family and cmmunity settings. In frmal speeches and class exercises, present infrmatin and argue pints f view. Example: Students will prepare and deliver a 5-8 minute persuasive speech using 2-4 credible surces. Cmmunicatin Studies Prgram Outcmes Research and cllect data n the demgraphics, needs, and expectatins f the audience; Analyze the audience and adjust t its needs when delivering a speech.

Cmmunicatin Studies 101 Student Learning Outcme At the end f the curse, the successful student will be able t prepare and deliver a well-paced 5-8 minute persuasive speech with apprpriate eye cntact and vlume and 2-4 credible surces. Required Textbk and Other Materials A Pcket Guide t Public Speaking (4th Editin), by Dan O'Hair, Hannah Rubenstein, and Rb Stewart (2013). The textbk is available in the WLAC bkstre. Supplemental materials may be prvided by the instructr. Yu will need the textbk fr this class s yu shuld get a cpy as sn as pssible. Assigned readings shuld be cmpleted befre each class meeting. Additinal infrmatin may be cvered in lecture. Please bring yur textbk t class. I will refer t it in lectures, and yu will use it fr speech preparatin, in-class exercises, and quizzes. Grading Plicy Yur final grade will be based n ttal pints earned in the curse. See "Grading Criteria" fr specifics.

Often instructrs make thse seats available t ther student asking t add the class (see "Schedule f Classes"). 3 Attempts t Pass "In the past, a student at any LACCD cllege culd have attempted t pass a class up t 7 times. Up t 4 'W's and up t 3 'D' and/r 'F' grades were permitted. Effective July 2012, the rule changes. A student may nly attempt t pass the same class 3 times. Receiving a 'W,' 'D,' r 'F' cunt as attempting t pass the class. Students wh unsuccessfully attempt a class 3 times but still want anther pprtunity t pass the class will have t enrll in the class at a nn-laccd campus r g thrugh the appeal prcess with Admissins" (WLAC Schedule f Classes). *In Cmmunicatin Studies101, yu will prepare and deliver graded and nn-graded speeches, write a library reprt and a final paper, take nline quizzes based n the required textbk, and fully engage with class activities and discussins. Students are expected t keep up with the readings and cme t class prepared t participate in class discussins and ther activities. IN-CLASS PARTICIPATION (Yu have t be in it t win it!). Yu are expected t actively participate in each sessin. Participatin in class includes, but is nt limited t, respnding t questins abut curse material, engaging in class discussins, delivering speeches, and being a curteus audience member fr yur classmates' speeches. Due t the nature f this class, attendance is crucial t participatin. Students are expected t attend class, be prmpt and remain in class fr the entire time. Students wh are unable t attend class regularly, regardless f the reasn r circumstance, shuld withdraw frm the class. Disruptive, disrespectful, r bstructive behavir will be dealt with in accrdance with the LACCD Standard f Student cnduct. Disciplinary actin can be taken if student behavir interferes with instructin. (Please refer t the Schedule f Classes.) Classrm and Campus Cleanliness Please help us keep the classrm and campus grunds clean. N fd r beverages, except fr water, is permitted inside instructinal classrms /labs. Please use the receptacles t dispse f trash. Please nte the fllwing: There are n excused absences. Attendance will be taken prmptly at the beginning f each class. Being absent, late t class, r leaving class early will result in the fllwing pint deductins in the in-class participatin prtin f yur grade: =>Each absence will be a deductin f FIVE pints. AN ABSENCE ON A PRESENTATION DAY IS A DEDUCTION OF 25 POINTS =>Each tardy (arriving late, leaving early r walking in and ut f class) will result in a deductin f 2 pints fr that sessin. If yu miss class mre than the number f times the class meets per week, yu risk being excluded, in accrdance with cllege plicy. This class meets twice a week. Participatin means that yu attend each class meeting and make a meaningful cntributin. This includes full participatin in class discussins and exercises, respecting thers and always being curteus.

Students wh aren t prepared t d this will be cnsidered as nt being ready t participate in the day s activities. Mbile Technlgy (cell phnes, ipds, laptps, etc.) must be turned ff and put away (nt n yur desk) at the beginning f class--n exceptins! Talking and texting n cell phnes nt nly distract yu, but they are a distractin fr me and yur peers. Distractins interrupt/disrupt the class and will nt be tlerated. Students wh are talking/texting will be asked t leave the classrm. Als, please nte that Educatin Cde prhibits anyne in a classrm frm using any electrnic listening r recrding device withut prir cnsent f the instructr Classrm Curtesy This is a speech class and attendance is imprtant, bth fr speakers and audience members. Yu are expected t be in class even when yu are nt giving a speech that day. (See absence sectin fr mre n this). On speech days, thse wh cme in r leave during a speech, r talk t ther audience members during a speech, will als have their participatin grade lwered. All mbile technlgy must be turned ff at the beginning f class. Yur grade will be affected if yur phne ges ff during a speech. If yu must be late t class, d nt enter the classrm while anther student is giving a speech. Never walk in frnt f smene giving a speech. SPEECHES Speeches MUST be given n the assigned days. Students wh are absent frm class n the day he r she is scheduled t speak will nt be allwed t make up their speech and will earn 0 pints fr the speech. In the event f a true and dcumented emergency (fr example, a trip t a hspital emergency rm), make-ups are nly allwed at the discretin f the instructr. Please nte that nly the instructr can authrize changes in the speaking schedule. In the very rare instance where the instructr authrizes a schedule change, please nte the fllwing: All speeches that are delivered ff schedule will be subject t a late penalty: 50% f the maximum pints fr the speech will be deducted frm the earned pint ttal fr the speech. *Speech Outline Packets Required: A detailed, full-sentence, typed speech utline with reference citatins, alng with the first page f yur cited surce(s), must be turned in t the instructr just befre the student delivers his r her speech. Speeches can nly be given after the entire utline packet is turned in t the instructr. Nte: Written wrk cannt be submitted withut delivering a speech.
