5 SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Do not argue with their parents; they are just trying to help! Do not argue with their teachers; they, too, are trying to help! Know the course they are on and what is expected from it. Are at school every day. Are punctual to tutor time and all lessons Are organised and fully equipped Recap the work in their books or online even if they haven t been set any homework! HARD WORK BEATS TALENT, Work hard. 30 In-School Assessment We begin to prepare students for the final exams during Year 9 Students are tested formally each half term Testing is based on past papers and sample assessment materials for the new GCSEs Year 10 students are tested on Year 9 and 10 topics Year 11 students are tested on Year 9-11 topics Mock examinations at the end of Year 10 are used to select the appropriate pathway for each student during Year 11

Complete all homework tasks Attend any after school revision sessions Ask their teachers for help if they are struggling Purchase revision guides Prior to tests/mock exams use past papers to practise applying concepts to exam style questions Use revision websites to support their learning

37 Don t confuse learning with being taught Use homework time wisely Encourage your child to catch-up with any work missed - for whatever reason Encourage reading as widely as possible circulars, newspapers, online articles, magazines as well as literature. The word-rich get richer while the word-poor get poorer in their reading skills Top Tips

Would that advert encourage you to buy X? Why? How would you explain? Explanation & Evaluation are two of the key skills for English Language and are cross-over skills for English Literature as well as other subjects, like History & RS. Using reading

40 Encourage your child to see WRITING as a craft Try to get them to see everything from the readers viewpoint, including punctuation: what will help the reader absorb your ideas as efficiently as possible? E.g. bold, boxes, bullet-points, spacing, subheadings Remember useful mnemonics - e.g. AFOREST Writing Tips

47 Acceptable reasons for not attending Family emergencies school: Serious medical appointments that cannot be flexible Religious events Other medical or dental appointments please try and book these appointments for after school

48 How can I maintain good attendance or improve my attendance? If your child is feeling unwell, encourage them to attend school and to see the school nurse rather than taking a whole day off. Inform your child s HOY/ tutor if you know of a barrier that is preventing them from wanting to come to school Avoid taking more than 10 days off school in an academic year. Avoid booking medical appointments in the school day. If you have to make an appointment in the school day, please book your appointment after 9am or after 12.20pm (see previous slide)
