1 CALCULUS WEEKLY SCHEDULE M. AUTH 1. 8/28 Covered sections 1.1 and 1.2. These sections are a review of precaluclus. We started to cover section 1.3 on limits. Limits are of fundamental importance in calculus and it is important that you spend a lot time doing the computations in this section. We will consider limits in two ways in this class: 1. as tables of values and 2. as graphs. You should be able to do both methods. Neither method is conceptually difficult but both are computationally tedious, and a little boring. You should do many problems until you are comfortable doing both. As an example we went through the example Approximating limits graphically and numerically from the Khan Academy video of that name in the Analyzing Limits Graphically section. I also showed you how to use Wolfram Alpha. Wolfram Alpha can be viewed as a very powerful graphing calculator. Whenever you do a problem using Wolfram Alpha, remind yourself that you may not use electronics on any of our exams. Finally please do not put too much pressure on yourself to do EVERY webassign hw problem. I will scale your webassign hw grade at the end of the semester so that if you do 70% of the problems by the end of the semester you will get a perfect hw score for the semester. You can skip some if they get boring or repetitive. I will not extend the due dates so try to at least do some problems from each set before the due date. I want to see that you are working on some problems. I do not want you to feel pressure doing the hw. I want you to feel that the webassign hw problems are helping you learn the material and prepare for the exams. When writing exams, I will use similar problems to the questions on our webassign hw so if you can do the hw problems comfortably you should be comfortable on my exams. 2. 9/6 We reviewed section 1.3. In particular we did some more examples computing limits numerically (making a table with a calculator) and graphically. We then discussed section 1.4 where we learned to compute limits with a calculator or a graph. The key idea was the substitution method. When the substitution method fails we learned to factor, multiply by the reciprocal, or add fractions in order to simplify before substituting. We always use common sense by making a rough table of values without a calculator. 3. 9/11 We finished covering chapter 1. Please work on the webassign problems from chapter 1. If you get stuck, try to watch some of the videos and do some of the 1

2 2 M. AUTH problems in the Limits and Continuity section by following the Kahn Academy link on our course webpage. The Khan Academy problems are often easier than the webassign problems. When you are struggling, it is often a good idea to work through some of the videos and problems from Khan before tackling the more challenging webassign exercises. Remember: our exam questions will be similar to the webassign questions so please look at the webassign questions. Also you can visit our math tutoring center: The location is Gateway Academic Center, NAC 1/219. The schedule is: Monday 10AM to 5PM Tuesday 1 PM to 5 PM Wednesday 10 AM to 5PM Thursday 1 PM to 5 PM Friday 11 AM to 4 PM 4. 9/18 We reviewed the webassign questions from chapter 1 and then covered section 2.1 Dervatives. Our first exam on Wednesday 27 September will cover the material from Chapter 1 as well as section 2.1. The problems will be comparable to the assigned webassign problems from Chapter 1 and section /27 We took our first exam on Wednesday. We reviewed the definition of the derivative in section 2.1 before the exam on Monday. After the exam we talked about the derivative as a function (and as a graph). This material can be found in section /2 We covered sections 2.3, 2.4, and 2.5, the differentiation rules. Please review many problems. If you are struggling to do the webassign problems, please try some problems from the Derivative Rules section on the Khan Academy calculus link on our webpage. The Khan Academy problems are usually a little easier and they often have hints and video tutorials. Please get help with me or with a group of students or with our free tutoring if you are struggling using the derivative rules. It is important that you master these sections so that you can understand all future concepts /11 We will review the Chain Rule (section 2.5). If you are finding the webassign problems to be difficult, please (1) try some of the Khan Academy problems (they are easier and have video tutorials) or (2) get help from me after class or (3) go to the free tutoring run by the math department (or the science department). There are many people who can help you with calculus 201. If you are finding the webassign problems to be difficult, please (1) try some of the Khan Academy problems (they are easier and have video tutorials) or (2) get help from me after class or (3) go to the free tutoring run by the math department (or the science department). There are many people who can help you with calculus 201. The Khan Academy components that will be helpful this week are found in the Advanced Derivative Rules section link (1) Differentiation Rules using multiple rules. (2) Second Derivatives. (3) Quiz 1. (4) Implicit Differentiation. You can also look in the Applications of Derivatives section (1) Related Rates Introduction. (2) Related Rates Problems /23 In-class Exam 2 will given on Wednesday 25 October. The exam will cover topics from sections 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, and 2.7. The best way to practice is to do the assigned webassign problems from those sections. I will also cover sections 2.8 Linear Approximation and 3.1 Maximums but those sections will not be part of exam /30 3.2: Mean Value Theorem and 3.1: Maximum and Minimum Values.
