1 MFL Conference Workshops WORKSHOP ONE 11AM 12PM (DELEGATES ATTEND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING THREE SESSIONS) Aspiring to become an outstanding subject leader, Dan Alliot & Keleigh Hewison This workshop will be delivered by Keleigh Hewison (from the Mawney Primary School, Havering) and her LSEF mentor (Dan Alliot), examining her journey since September 2014 as the Subject Leader for French. Keleigh is a KS1 teacher with little experience of the language herself, and took over leadership in September 2014, launching the subject from scratch. Keleigh will share how she leads her subject, supports colleagues, measures progress in learning and has developed her own skills to reach a point where every KS2 class teacher is now teaching French on a weekly, time-tabled basis, measures and records learner progress, and develops their pedagogy in line with the KS2 curriculum. The Primary French Project Niveau bleu and niveau blanc, Catherine Cheater, Primary French Project Consultant This workshop aims to support all teachers who teach French in Key Stage 2. Since the introduction of statutory language-learning in Key Stage 2 in September 2014, one of the biggest challenges facing classroom teachers is a lack of subject knowledge in relation to the language being taught, and a lack of experience in the pedagogy of teaching that language. The Primary French Project aims to provide a complete solution, by offering free French training/teaching resources, including fully comprehensive planning linked to the Programme of Study for languages in KS2, and easy-to-use PowerPoint presentations for the whiteboard, with sound recordings and images. See This workshop is delivered by Catherine Cheater. Catherine is a trainer and author with an international reputation in the field of languages teaching in the primary phase. She has experience in teaching languages to all age groups from nursery to A-Level, and has been involved in advisory work since the early 1990s. Formerly Senior Language Teaching Adviser at CILT, The National Centre for Languages, she has played a key role in research and development in primary languages at national level, working with Local Authorities, Specialist Language Colleges, Higher Education Institutions and individual schools. She has devised and delivered a broad range of training courses over many years, and has particular expertise in training on the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages.

2 CLIL versus Discreet Language Lessons, Marily Troyano & Ana Chapela Two very experienced primary language specialists tell of their experiences when they experimented further with their language teaching by introducing CLIL, (Content and language integrated learning) or another curriculum subject content into their lessons. They give a very honest opinion of the pros and cons of trying to teach the geography of Mexico in Spanish, or of studying the Amazonian rainforest in Spanish, thus departing from the more traditional language used in discreet lessons. Was valuable core language lost? Did the extra cognitive challenge of teaching a subject in the language inspire or discourage pupils? Ana Chapela from Salusbury Primary School in Brent and Marily Troyano from St Charles Catholic Primary School in Kensington and Chelsea have made interesting discoveries during the course of their participation in the LSEF project, and their presentation will be of interest to both specialist and non- specialist language teachers, TAs, co-ordinators and head teachers.

3 WORKSHOP TWO 12:00PM 1:00PM (DELEGATES ATTEND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING FOUR SESSIONS) Using original texts to teach Spanish to younger children, Verena Mulloy As part of her focus for the LSEF Project, Verena has been trying to find ways to allow children to express themselves more creatively in the foreign language using the vocabulary they know. She has been exploring teaching Spanish through stories, drawing from her experience of teaching literacy as a class teacher and combining it with her experience of teaching foreign languages. In this workshop she would like to outline her experience of teaching through stories with practical examples. She is hoping to engage in a discussion with other teachers to allow us all to find better ways to teach foreign languages using original texts. Verena teaches Spanish at Rutherford House School and French at Kew Preparatory School. Presently, she teaches children in Reception, KS1 and Year 3. The key question that she is exploring for her Action Research MA module is: What kinds of tasks allow a more creative response from children? Developing MFL and international links, Sharon Thomas & Ian Field The introduction of Languages into the Primary National Curriculum has seen many schools forge links across Europe and the wider world. There are organisations providing assistance for schools looking to extend their global outlook by creating partnerships that will provide an authentic and relevant window into different cultures and countries, to prepare their pupils for life in a global society. This workshop will: Outline the potential benefits of schools receiving funding and international award status. Explain the requirements and application process for the award and funding for teacher training abroad. Allow participants an opportunity to evaluate their current position and begin planning the content of their applications. Sharon is a full time class teacher with eleven years teaching experience. She currently holds the role of (joint) Humanities School Improvement Leader at her school. The MFL aspects of her remit include sourcing quality training experiences for staff and raising the general profile of languages within the school community. Ian Field is the Modern Foreign Languages Co-ordinator at Granton Primary School in South London. He recently made a successful bid for funding from The British Council and European Union, allowing staff to visit different countries around Europe as part of their CPD.

4 How Cross-Curricular Objectives can Build Confidence in the Use of the Target Language, Emma Lagartixa Shaftesbury Park is a bilingual (English/French) primary school in Wandsworth, South West London. After a successful introductory year, the bilingual stream now incorporates Reception and Year One, with preparations well underway for the bilingual Year Two class opening in September French is also taught as an MFL in Key Stage 2. This session will explore the impact of introducing the International Primary Curriculum on children's language learning. We will consider best practice in forging effective and engaging crosscurricular links and fostering a positive attitude to using the target language. Emma Lagartixa is the MFL Co-Ordinator and Bilingual Stream Leader at Shaftesbury Park Primary School, where she teaches the bilingual Year One class. Having qualified from the Institute of Education with a Primary PGCE with French, Emma has teaching experience in both London and Paris. Emma also holds a diploma in Portuguese from the University of Lisbon and has done a great deal of EAL work with children of Brazilian and Portuguese origin. Let s talk about Art!! A CLIL project, Michela Measso "Let s talk about Art!! A CLIL project. In this workshop, participants will see how language learning can be enhanced through teaching Italian Art using Italian at primary school level. Series of successful classroom strategies and activities to motivate children and increase their intercultural understanding will be shown. This workshop will also present cross-curricular links to promote interpersonal skills and language abilities. " Currently working for the Italian Consulate in London teaching Italian, Michela has been teaching Italian in Primary Schools since She tested a variety of teaching methods designed to capture students' interest and maximize individual learning. Since 2003, she has also been working as a MFL teacher trainer. She has contributed as a speaker to numerous MFL Conferences at the Italian Cultural Institute in London and at the British Council.She has recently developed an interest for CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and has been collaborating with museums and art galleries in London and the LSEF Project with Network for Languages to enhance foreign-language learning.

5 WORKSHOP THREE 2:30PM 3:30PM (DELEGATES ATTEND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING THREE SESSIONS) I speak in the MFL!, I am excellent!, Marta Lopez This workshop will look at Target Language (TL) strategies that help students to keep positive and motivated about learning a MFL. This workshop aims to provide you with strategies that have worked in the MFL classroom. We will also discuss the positive use of these methods and any challenges we could face when applying them. There will be emphasis on sharing any positive TL approaches, ideas or experiences we have encountered in our MFL teaching when managing behavior. Marta has been living and teaching in London for the last 17 years. After gaining her degree in English Philology and certificate of pedagogical aptitude, she moved to London where she started working in 2000 as a Spanish assistant in a Secondary School. Marta has since worked as a language tutor at a range of colleges and universities and gained experience teaching languages as a Specialist language teacher, EAL and SEN teacher at a Language Unit in the primary sector. She currently teaches Spanish at three Primary Schools in London: Chesterton Primary School (Wandsworth), St. Andrew s Primary School (Lambeth) and Osmani Primary School (Tower Hamlets). She also teaches to adults at St. Francis Xavier College and prepares GCSE and Spanish A level projects for a UK educational publisher. Using authentic materials links to cross-curricular lessons, Noelia Rivas Noelia Rivas speaks Spanish and French and has a wealth of experience as a languages teacher, both in primary and secondary schools. She has been exploring how to develop her practice further during her participation in the LSEF project. In this workshop, she will show how simple finding authentic materials can be and demonstrate how to use them when planning lessons with cross-curricular links to Science or Geography. Noelia has linked her French lessons to her school s creative curriculum topics. Learning about the same topics in French gives pupils real purpose to their learning, which is highly motivating and boosts achievement. Noelia currently teaches French and is MFL Coordinator at Sudbury Primary in Brent.

6 5 'hero' ingredients for a primary MFL teacher's repertoire, Helen Lawlor In nearly 10 years of teaching MFL at Primary, Helen will consider the question which five essential ingredients would she not be without...and why? At the workshop there will be the opportunity to discuss and share with others their own hero ingredients. Helen Lawlor has been teaching Primary MFL since She currently teaches at two Beckenham primary schools, alternating between French and Spanish every half-term, and she also runs a Chinese Mandarin after- school club. Helen has recently completed a Modern Language Studies degree with the Open University, and is now looking forward to finding time to improve her somewhat limited Chinese! This year, as part of the Network for Languages London LSEF project, Helen has particularly enjoyed the excellent quality CPD, especially the Phonics course, and the opportunity to come together regularly with like-minded teachers to share ideas.
