2 Language Allocation Language allocation in 2nd Grade it s 70% Spanish - 30% English. Spanish will be practiced during: Math Lectoescritura Science Personalized Learning Time (PLT) English will be practiced during: Morning Breakfast/Health/Morning Work English literacy Social Studies

3 The Bridge As part of the Biliteracy Unit Framework that we follow in our school, students will participate in The Bridge. The Bridge is the instructional moment when teachers purposefully bring the two languages together, strategically guiding bilingual learners to: Transfer the academic content they have learned in one language to the other Engage in contrastive analysis Develop academic English and Spanish across the content areas Read and write grade-level texts across the curriculum Develop metalinguistic awareness We want to make sure parents know what kids mean when they talk about The Bridge at home

4 A Look Ahead (curriculum) Reading and Writing (Spanish & English): - Study and analyze a variety of non-fiction and fiction texts - Write opinion, personal narrative, and informative pieces - Improve in our knowledge of grammar and spelling - Knowledge of the writing process (Organizing ideas, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing of text). Range of Typical Reading Levels in Second Grade The expected reading level for children in the fall of second grade is 18. Children are expected to progress through the levels that are noted on the range below so that at the end of the school year, they are reading at level 28. It is important to note that some children will have scores that are above or below the grade-level expectation Fall Spring 28

5 A Look Ahead (curriculum) Mathematics Solve number problems in addition and subtraction up to 3 digits. Understand place value up to 1,000. Measure length. Work with time and money. Represent and interpret data. Work with shapes and their attributes. Social Studies and Sciences will be integrated into literacy. We will continue to have experiential learning (hands-on) for both the sciences and the social studies however, we will also ensure that these disciplines are integrated in our reading and writing instruction as well. Social Science Science - Learn about the attributes of a community -Use maps to navigate - Balance and Motion -Analyze the geography of different places - Habitats -Research how communities change and grow and how we compare to communities around the world. - Weather - Insects You will find copies of the year long plan in your teacher s room.

6 Assessments READING: The new state assessments for reading are computer based and it s called istation. They will be performed in both English and Spanish to assess the students reading level in both languages (Fluency, Accuracy, Comprehension). The assessments are performed 3 times a year. WRITING: Writing samples will be acquired from every students in both languages at the beginning, middle and end of the year to assess progress. MATH: Math screeners are given to students at the beginning, middle, and end of the year to assess number sense in students. In addition, students are giving a beginning of year inventory assessment from Math Expressions (district math curriculum). A pre and post assessment is also given for every unit taught throughout the year.

7 Schedule Start time is 7:55 a.m. for the first bell. Children will be tardy by 8:00 a.m. If you child is arriving late please go to the office first to obtain a tardy pass. If your child is going to be absent please call the attendance line or the office. Office: Attendance Line: You will find copies of your child s classroom schedule in your teacher s room. Make sure to take a copy home!

8 Breakfast, Lunch & Snack Breakfast is served to ALL every morning as we come in at 7:55 a.m. We would like to encourage all children to eat with us in the classroom. This is also a great opportunity to build community with one another. Lunch is every day at 12:20 p.m. after recess. Snack will be taken in our classrooms at 10:55 a.m. We have 25 kids in each class. Please provide a nutritious snack that is already prepared and ready to serve. If you are providing crackers, pretzels, or things like this, kindly bring it all ready in individual bags or in individual zip-lock bags so that its ready for kids to grab and go. Unfortunately teachers don't have the time to prepare snacks to be ready to serve ahead of time. Your help is greatly appreciated. Classrooms are nut-free

9 Homework Weekly expectation: READING: Children will read EVERY DAY for at least 20 min. This is the most important part of homework. After reading, the child will complete the reading log and parents will initial the log every day. Before signing their reading log, please ask your child to tell you about what they ve read. Talking about what we read helps us make meaning of what we read. In addition, ONCE A WEEK your child will respond, in writing, to one prompt about one book he/she read during the week. MATH: They will also have a few pages of math homework to complete during the week.. Homework comes home on Fridays and is due to your teacher by the following Friday. The complete homework sheet should be signed by parents before coming to school

10 Communication We all are looking forward to partnering with you! Because of the nature of teaching, the best way to talk to us is to setup a time to meet with us ahead of time. We hope you understand that we are seldom available to chat at length about your child right before school or throughout the school day, unless a meeting has been previously arranged. Feel free to call us or us. In addition, a monthly newsletter will be coming home in the Friday Folders with important information around what we are learning, upcoming events, and other important news. 11 Class wish list We always need a little help... If you are interested in donating any of the following items to our class to be used this year and for years to come, we would greatly appreciate it! - Legos (used or new are welcomed) -Play dough -Address labels (Avery laser X2⅝) -Sticky Notes ( ½ by 2 and 4 by 4) -Composition notebooks (many!) -White board / EXPO markers -Electric (not battery operated) pencil sharpener. -Dice -Any chapter book or picture book in good condition that your child simply will not read any more and you would like to donate to the classroom library. - A donation of $15 or anything you can. The money collected will be shared among the whole 2nd grade team and will be used for Scholastic s News Magazine subscription for our kids, field trips, extra materials as they are needed during the school year.

12 Reminders! Please remember to send your child to school with tennis shoes on the days they have P.E. Thanks! A good night sleep really makes a difference in their day at school! If you have alternate after school plans please let your teacher know. A quick note in the morning will be greatly appreciated. We want to make sure your children know what to do and where to go when the bell rings!
