To prepare professional scientists for roles in national and international science communities in the field of Marine Biology and Zoology. To enable graduates to become lifelong learners with an appreciation of the value of science to society. 9. Intended programme outcomes for each of the categories (the outcomes must be numbered sequentially) Learning outcomes are based on the appropriate QAA Subject Benchmark Statements Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies (2014); Biosciences (2015); and/or Master s Degree Characteristics Statement (2015). Knowledge and Understanding Students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: 1: the nature of scientific investigation, the theoretical basis of techniques employed by marine zoology and the value of interdisciplinary approaches in zoology generally, and marine zoology specifically 2: major animal phyla, both marine and terrestrial (vertebrates and invertebrates), their morphology, specific physiology and adaptations 3: major marine food webs and ecosystems, physical and biological constraints on stability and hence biodiversity 4: animal form and function through theoretical and practical study of specific molecular, cellular and physiological processes 5: complexity and diversity of animals and marine organisms through their genetics and evolution, and the interrelationships between organisms and their environments. Subject-specific Skills Students should be able to demonstrate the ability to: 6: to conduct field and laboratory investigations on marine biota and their environment including quantitative sampling of organisms from marine habitats; as a result, to show skills of recording, collating, analysing and reporting marine zoological or biological data 7: to identify to specific level, using keys, major groups of terrestrial animals and marine organisms and recognise their major morphological features Cognitive (thinking) 8: to confidently articulate and discuss current areas of bioscience that have socio-economic or ethical relevance. Students should be able to demonstrate the ability to: 2

3 Skills 9: apply acquired subject knowledge to address problems in Marine Biology and specifically Marine Zoology in a creative and practical manner 10: construct reasoned arguments to support a position on the ethical and social impact of scientific advances and appreciate the validity of different points of view 11: analyse, synthesise, summarise and apply information critically (including numerical data) from a variety of sources and cite references appropriately Key Skills 12: integrate theory and practice. Criteria for Admission 11. Student employability & career opportunities. Entry requirement information is as it applies to the cohort entry. It is known that changes to the grading system are occurring (or are likely to occur) for some (or all) of the devolved HE sectors in the UK tariff points including an accepted level 3 qualification* in Biology and usually one other science subject (Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Environmental Science), plus Grade C in GCSE Maths, Double Award Science and English. *Level 3 qualifications include A levels, Access, Irish Highers, International Baccalaureate, Welsh Baccalaureate, Scottish Advanced Highers and others for a full list, please refer to the new UCAS tariff at Due to the academic requirements for this programme, BTEC courses on their own do not satisfy the entry requirements and Access courses are considered on a case by case basis. We also welcome applications from mature applicants, individuals with European qualifications and international applicants (subject to minimum English language requirements). Opportunities exist for graduates in fisheries laboratories, university and government laboratories, public service industries (electric and water), conservation bodies (Natural England, Countryside Council for Wales, Environment Agency) as well as the private sector (oil companies, waste disposal companies). There are increasing opportunities in fish and shell fish culture projects in the UK and Abroad.
