This academically challenging course is part of the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Program which will allow you the opportunity to earn an IB Diploma/Certificate. As such, you are responsible for a series of oral and written assessments which culminate in the IB Exam in May. In this course, we study the artistic use of language and the depth of meaning created from its increasing complexity. We strive to become eloquent writers, multifaceted thinkers, and global citizens. I m excited you re back for the second year of this rigorous course! IMPORTANT EXAMINATION DATES (SUBJECT TO CHANGE): World Literature (Written Assignment) (written during 11th grade year). Final, revised paper due to me by February 3, Students submit a reflective statement and literary essay on one work studied in part 1. (25 marks) The reflective statement must be words in length. The essay must be words in length. This counts 25% of your total IB English score. All final components must be submitted in three formats: paper copy to be kept at DHS (these will be a combination of all drafts and outlines); final draft to TURNITIN.com; final draft uploaded by student to IB OCC. Individual oral commentary and discussion to be performed the week of January 23, 2017 (20 minutes). Formal oral commentary on poetry studied in Part 2 (fall semester) with subsequent questions (10 minutes) followed by a discussion based on one of the other Part 2 works (10 minutes) (30 marks). This is a twenty minute, recorded oral commentary based on one extract from one of the Part 2 works you have studied, followed by a discussion based on a different Part 2 work. The focus of the first portion of the commentary is poetry. Students will prepare a 10 minute commentary over a poem studied in Part 2 of the syllabus. The second portion of the discussion will focus on one of the other works studied during this part of the syllabus. Due Date: January 19, This counts for 15% of your IB English score. This will be internally assessed and externally moderated. IB Practice Exam : Throughout the course we will have a number of practice exams. These are highly encouraged and recommended. Please take these seriously and make every attempt to be there. There will also be recorded oral practice exams. If you have issues recording, please let me know EARLY so you can have plenty of time to participate. IB Exams: May 3, Paper 1 & May 4, Paper 2 **It is important to note that IB does not allow make-up exams. If you are late or miss your exam, you will not be allowed to reschedule. Please put these dates on your calendar now. Paper 1: Literary commentary (2 hours). Wednesday May 3, 2017, TBA. The paper consists of two passages from literature not studied in class: one prose and one poetry. Students choose one and write a literary commentary (20 marks). This counts 20% of your IB English score.

2 Page 2 Paper 2: Essay (2 hours). Thursday May 4, 2017, TBA. The paper consists of three questions for each literary genre. In response to one question students write an essay based on at least two works studied in part 3 (25 marks). This counts 25% of your IB English score. The Individual Oral Presentation (15% of IB English score), which you completed last year, may not be revised. The scores you earned will be forwarded to the IBO along with the IOC score and your audio recording from the IOC. TUTORIALS: Tuesday 8:10-8:40 Thursday 4:15-4:45 Other tutorial times will be made by appointment only. Be aware that I teach other courses than IB and those students will share these tutorial times with you. You re welcome to schedule a conference at any time for help with your writing or anything else. I want you to be as successful as possible in this class and as a communicator. PLEASE, please, come in for help as often as you can. CONFERENCE PERIODS: 1 st and 5 th *These are available to you for scheduling writing conferences. Please schedule in advance. WORK LOAD: The qualities you need to be successful in this class are organization, time management, and a desire to work hard. The amount of reading is prodigious, and all of your reading will be done outside of class. Familiarize yourself with the reading list, and make sure to purchase needed books well in advance. I will give you the due dates for completion later. Expect to write at least one essay per major literary work, and be willing to re-write. Much of the writing we do will be timed writing, handwritten, in preparation for the IB Exams in May. CLASS RULES: Be punctual, be prepared, be courteous, work the entire period, and turn off phones and electronic devices. Consequences: verbal correction, detention, parent call, referral. GRADING POLICY: Major summative 70% Minor summative 30% Please see the district grading policy. We will follow this exactly. Please be aware that in this class it is IMPERATIVE to meet all deadlines. Falling behind will be detrimental to your success in an advanced class. If you fall behind, please contact me immediately. GRADING OF COMPOSITIONS: Composition grades are assessed letter grades based on their content and style (which includes diction and mechanics.) A+ is a 98, A is a 95, A- is a 92, B+ is an 88, B is an 85, and B- is an 82, and so on. IB assessments are graded holistically or according to IB rubrics. ABSENCES:

3 Absences do not exempt students from academic requirements. Excessive absences, even if excused or extracurricular, may result in failure of the course because of a loss of instruction. An incomplete may be granted at the teacher s discretion, but incompletes must be cleared by the as soon as possible. Additionally, having an incomplete for anything other than excused absence, even when it is cleared, may result in your being ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities for three weeks. Page 3 If you are absent for any reason, it is your responsibility to communicate with me. I do require long term assignments to be submitted on the due date. For extracurricular activities, please communicate absences in advance. PLAGIARISM AND CHEATING: You are required to read each assigned work carefully, thoughtfully, and entirely by the assigned due date. Cheating will result in a zero on the assignment and notification of parents. Plagiarism of any kind, whether from commercially prepared notes, the Internet, or another student's paper, falls under the heading of cheating and is treated the same. Remember, plagiarism occurs any time you fail to give another person credit--and properly document it--for his or her words or ideas. Even if you put the information into your own words, it is still plagiarism unless you properly cite and document it. All written assignments must be uploaded electronically to to check for plagiarism.
